Terry F'N Kirby?

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/f...dolphins-front

There is a slim chance the Dolphins will again have the services of their starting tailback.

From 1993, that is.

As part of their search to find another tailback in light of Ricky Williams' impending retirement, Terry Kirby will join Stacey Mack today for a workout.

Kirby, 34, visited the Davie training facility Tuesday hoping for a chance to get back into the NFL after a one-season absence. The Dolphins decided to grant that opportunity after ex-Detroit tailback James Stewart canceled his visit.

Kirby accumulated 2,683 yards in three seasons with the Dolphins after being a third-round pick in 1993. Kirby then played with San Francisco (1996 to 1998), Cleveland (1999) and Oakland (2000 to 2002) and sat out last year following his release by Tampa Bay in preseason.

The Dolphins have also explored a trade with Green Bay for ex-UM standout Najeh Davenport, the backup to starter Ahman Green. An NFL source said the Packers are open to a trade, but the Dolphins may be unwilling to part with what Green Bay is seeking.

Even with Mack and Kirby working out and trade possibilities with a host of teams, an NFL source said, the franchise may enter practices Saturday without a tailback to take Williams' roster spot. Unless wowed by Mack or Kirby, the Dolphins are likely to assess the tailbacks on the roster and see what other personnel becomes available later.

Trade talks with Green Bay also were slowed when Packers Vice President of Football Operations Mark Hatley was found dead at his apartment Tuesday morning. Hatley, 54, was a close friend of several members of the Dolphins' brain trust -- including General Manager Rick Spielman and coach Dave Wannstedt -- from when they worked together with the Chicago Bears.

Spielman said Hatley was godfather to one of his four children. "It just really puts life in perspective," he said.

More of konrad?

For five offseasons Wannstedt has talked about getting fullback Rob Konrad more opportunities as a runner and receiver. There may be no better time than now.

"I am disappointed to lose a friend and a teammate in Ricky," Konrad said Tuesday, "but I feel I can step up and make a contribution. ... They've put a big snow cone in front of me the last five years. Here's the opportunity if they really want that to happen."

Konrad has lost 15 pounds and weighs 248. That is his lightest since he was a senior at Syracuse, when he rushed for 417 yards and seven touchdowns and caught 20 passes.

Konrad hasn't gotten the same chances since being a second-round draft choice in 1999. Konrad had four carries last season, and his 16 catches were 18 fewer than the previous year.

Konrad said he learned about Williams' retirement announcement Sunday morning, finding 27 voice messages on his cell phone.

"I was shocked like everyone else," said Konrad, who was Williams' lead blocker. "I think I probably talk to Ricky as much as anyone on the team. It's not something I would ever put past him. But something must have come on toward the end of the offseason. Why would he go through minicamp practices and workouts? It's horrible with the heat, and we don't get paid.

"I know some guys have mentioned they were angry because it's not the best timing, a week before training camp. But at the same time, I understand where he's coming from."

James Stewart canceled his visit? Because he's had so many more enticing offers?

Surely Jimmy Johnson is scouring the local penitentiaries for runners to help out his old friend.

I'll bet Sammie Smith is ready for a comeback.

Or maybe Karim Abdul-Jabbar.

The good news is that while some of his other skills have faded, Sammie can still fumble at the goalline with the best of 'em. He's right up there with Tony "Oops" Dorsett in that category.

Isn't Cecil Collins out of jail yet?

Terry Kirby? He sucked when he was in his "prime".

Robert Edwards did not play for anyone in 2003. I have no idea whether he's trying to get back into the league, but I would presume so.

Byars had several good seasons with Miami and was a pretty reliable target out of the backfield. Then Jimmy Johnson came along, tried to move him to Tight End and later cut him because he was too slow.

Tony Paige was a great run blocker and pretty good receiver. He worked his butt off on every play. I wish he played longer for the Fins.

I also liked Bernie Parmalee. He was better than both Kirby and KAJ and should have kept his job in 96.

Of all the options out there right now, I'd most like to see them give Robert Edwards a shot.

What if got one of those online degrees? FWIW, I was able to "earn" a PhD in Metaphysics in a week with $20 and a self addressed stamped envelope.

I knew there was someone we were missing in there... Karim Abdul-Jabbar (or, as we uniquely referred to him in my fantasy league, "the defendant" - reference to the lawsuit filed by the former Lew Alcindor against the same).

Actually, I think the original idea along those lines was to name every mid-grade Dolphins running back of years gone by... but time marches on, far be it for me to put a stop to it.

In that case, I'd like to submit my favorite, Troy Stradford.

Yeah, I'm thinking Miami is prety much screwed this year. Let's go 6-10, dump Wannstedt, get a decent draft choice and bring in that kid from Kansas St to carry the ball next year.

I was weirded out too. When I started reading it, I thought it was going to talk about that Green Bay wanted that turned off the Dolphins for getting Davenport... then it goes to saying that a guy died, and just ends.. weird.
