OT - Taking a political pledge

I am interested in political topics. I pay attention to these things in real life, and try to stay informed about important issues affecting me, my family and friends, my country, and my world. I even follow politics itself, as I find elctoral issues usually interesting and sometimes compelling.

I, however, feel nothing but exasperation when I read through the political back-and-forth that seems to erupt here on a daily basis. There are frequently times when I feel I have something to add, and sometimes do. But far more often than not, I regret making any contribution to the threads, because my observations are either sloughed off, misinterpreted, ridiculed, or some combination of the preceding.

So, for my FOFC purposes, I'm out of politics until the election is over. There's not much loss there, since my participation has really waned in the last year or so (as these things seem to have gotten more and more bitter and personal) and I'm not much of a contributor anyway. But I'm just better off staying away as completely as I can.

I hereby pledge to remain out of any purely partisan or divisive political threads at FOFC until election day.

-Signed, QuikSand

Can I countersign this thing?

I'll pledge to stay out of them as well... except maybe to occasionally contribute the always constructive .

I believe you can still contribute right up until Election Day ... as long as you do it through a 527 group

Which election day?

I see a lot of loopholes in your pledge.

Eh, if the thread was suddenly withdrawn, it would be replaced by a thread about Alan Keyes

Why is it that the people who probably should post in the political threads post a pledge in this thread instead, and the ones who should take the pledge, won't?

Hopefully tuning out will be a little more satisfying than tuning in. If little has changed in the past four years I doubt anything will change in the next couple of months.

Just wanted to keep this for posterity. It'd be a shame if he deleted it.

No need. I've tried to do my part to keep folks around here informed about things. I think things have reached a point where further information will do little to change anything.

I hereby pledge to remain out of any purely partisan or divisive football threads at FOFC until the Super Bowl.

I have a high threshold for political bickering, and have long since learned to ignore the most partisan among the debaters.

Frankly, I've missed Quik's insights on these topics, and think this pledge sucks bunny guano.

{Wonders what hidden meaning "bunny guano" might have with regard to Solecismic's next game.}

The loophole here, of course, is that by pledging to "remain out of" these threads, that means the threads have to exist. But, no one has pledged to not start such a thread.

I can't wait for the first enforcement action. Viewing counts, too, right - not just posting?

You're the lawyer. You tell us what "remain out" means.

My resolve is already being tested as we speak. There is a thread even labeled "purely partisan, divisive political thread" that demands an immediate retort.

I must resist.

That's ok you will get your retort in a couple months. Of course by then you could be right or my retort will not hold water by then.

I think one of the things that has changed over the past five years or so is the degree to which our political beliefs have polarized in the USA. Almost all political discussions I've seen anywhere over the past two years have gotten personal and desctructive within minutes. I miss the good discussions at all levels of society.

I have made one post in a political thread -- the one discussing the first presidential debate. I judged that thread to be neither purely partisan nor divisive... but it's a judgment call, I guess. I got in pretty late and nobody paid any attention, though, so it's a wash anyway.

I think I've posted in three political threads, none of which were partisan or divisive. They were all either commenting on the debates or polling techniques.
