Barnes Says He's Ashamed For Getting Bush Into Texas Guard

Former Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes says he's ashamed that he helped President Bush get into the Texas Air National Guard so he could avoid serving in Vietnam.

The Democratic politician makes his comment in a 45-second video posted on the Internet.

The video was recorded at a May 27 meeting of John Kerry supporters.

Barnes says he became ashamed of his actions after he walked through the Vietnam Memorial and looked at the names of people who died.

President Bush has denied that family influence got him into the Guard.

Bush spokeswoman Claire Buchan says she's not surprised that a partisan Democrat is making these statements.

Barnes first said in 1999 that he recommended Bush for a pilot's position at the request of a Bush family friend.

Meaning that he would've gotten them all into the National Guard as well if he could? Either that or he felt bad that Bush wasn't up there? This attacking of military service, whether in Nam or Texas, is just pissing me off. Kerry and Bush need to debate soon, so at least they can attack each other to their faces.
