of Pickle Barrels and Frog Pond

so, my in-laws recently built a house. Well, they didn't build it, someone else built it, but you get the idea. Anyway, their house is sort of in the boonies - at the end of a dead-end, dirt road, in a heavily wooded area. the "sort of" part comes from the fact that they are just a mile from a pretty major road in NH, but where their house is, it's all trees and only 2 other neighbors on their road.

we spent this past weekend at their house, helping them get thing unpacked and stuff. At one point, I took a short walk into the woods behind their house. About a half mile from the house, I came upon an area that had several trees cut down, making a sort of minature clearing. in that clearing were about 15 old pickle barrels or joint compound barrels, with holes cut out of the bottom. My assumption is that these barrels were used to grow pot - the location is perfect for it (heavily wooded, secluded area, yet very close to a major road). The trees had been cut down a long time ago (several years, I'm sure), and the barrels looked like they'd been there for a while (and were empty), so I'm thinking this operation is over. Or am I completely missing another potential use for these barrels?

the other oddity in the woods was really close to the house we found a small, man-made pond like thing. we called it frog pond because there were 5-10 frogs sitting around it. anyways, I don't get what the pond's purpose is - it's about 5 feet in diameter. Not really sure how deep it is, but at least a couple. it was either man-made, or man-landscaped, because it's built with a circle of rocks. but what I don't get is WHY? before this house went in this summer, I don't think there was anything on this land except for trees. (and pot!). there were old, old tire ruts running near the pond, which I assume were from some logging or something at some point, but that still doesn't explain to me why someone would build a small pond in the middle of the woods.

no real point to this post - I doubt someone will have an answer to the pond thing, but I thought I'd toss it out there just for kicks.

Maybe the previous owners built the pond as a frog trap because they loved frog legs. Are there little froggie skeletons laying around?

Maybe they dug the pond so they had a readily available water source for the pot? Who wants to drag out a huge drum of water on a daily basis. That kind of stuff might attract attention.
