Not like Bush & Co. could do anything. God forbid they go after a country that ACTUALLY has weapons of mass destruction.

WTF.....

I live here in korea with my family. We were planning on re;locating back to the US next May that may get moved up. The Korean news sources are playing a wait and see the slant is so far has been oh poor suffering North Korea has had a another terrible accident maybe.... I guess either it was an test gone awry/accident or an actual test. One interesting thing to note here.Back in 2002, Kim Hyong-ik Country was one of three places suspected of being a possible site for North Korea’s uranium enrichment program. In particular, they pointed out that in the mountainous village of Yongjo-ri, site of a North Korean Daepodong 1 & 2 missile base, underground facilities were being built. Korean-U.S. intelligence didn’t know what to make of them at the time, but they were concerned. Just sometjing to note that's all.I will keep shooting out any new info we get here from the local source.

Russians say North Korea preparing to declare itself a nuclear power

Not like this hasn't been a known problem well before Bush & Co. took office.

I've heard on a web site that the supposed 4 mile wide mushroom cloud was a ''forest fire.'' A forest fire causing a huge crater? Explainations from firefighters on whether forest fires cause craters would be appreciated.

Would that reason be because Powell said it and not John Kerry? I think the answer is "YES"!

NO it would be because we seem to have set a precedent of making decisions too hastily and on limited information...would you not agree?

Its kinda funny to see the US administration scrambling to think up some stupid explanation for this, rather than just admitting it was a nuke. During the cold war we knew instantly when a nuke was tested anywhere in the world. I suspect those same detectors are pointed at North Korea right now, and have been for years. Sure Powell and Rice know what it was, but the American people can't be trusted with the truth about something like this...we're just not ready...couldn't handle it...the truth is something that only the current administration is prepared to properly deal with.

And the stories about mushroom clouds? Rice can't confirm those stories...heck, mushroom clouds are a common occurrence really...when you think about it. Ya see 'em all the time. Could've been a forest fire. And the reports of a huge explosion from the same area? Well, maybe its just a hoax. It could have been anything...maybe it was the simultaneous explosion of a bunch of trees during that forest fire.

Think of the all the political implications of N. Korea testing a nuke, and you'll begin to realize why the Bush administration is hoping this was just a forest fire.

It's not just the administration trying to come up with excuses, it's the entire world. I don't think anyone is saying it was definitely a nuke yet. We're not the only country that has nuclear detectors. You can bet Russia and Japan have detectors pointing at North Korea as well.

Hell, when a Republican says it was not a nuclear blast 12 years from now you would still think they are lying evil overlords.

The North Koreans were building a dam. Don't always assume the worst.

I was under the impressions that any reasonably advanced seismic detection equipment could pick up a nuclear detonation pretty much anywhere in the world.

I'm probably wrong.

They do have detection equipment, although I'm not sure if it detects seismic activity, radiation or both.
