Thumbs up OT: I bought a guitar

For the last few years I have been wanting to learn how to play guitar just for myself so today I went to Guitar Center with a friend of mine that knows alot about them.

I was looking for something that would be inexpensive in case I gave up in frustration and passed my friend's inspection as far as construction. Well I tested a few Fenders, Gibsons and Epiphones and a couple other brands in the $100-300 price range. I decided on a Squire Strat which was $160 out the door. It is red with a red headstock and a rosewood fingerboard (see I am learning already). I had them put some heavier strings on it and they adjusted some stuff all for free.

Anyways, even though I have pretty big hands this one felt the best for the two chords (sp?) I know. My friend gave me a small Marshall practice amp that is quite loud. He was quite impressed with the workmanship of my guitar for the price though he said eventually I should put some new pickups and tuners on it. He actually bought one himself for practice which made me feel good about it (he plays in a band).

Look out Jimi Hendrix I am coming for you!

Squire Strats were actually introduced as Billy Squire's signature guitar back in the 80s. I record, so let's make an album.

Take your worst moment playing guitar and multiply it by ten and that is me.

I must admit it is fun cranking up the amp and trying to look cool despite making absolute noise.

My first electric was a Squire Strat and I agree with your friend that it is a good guitar to start with. They have a good tone to them and have good action. For the price it is a nice guitar.

We had a Squire Strat sitting at the studio (was signed by Billy when he was at our studio). We tended to pull it out of storage from time to time. It actually saved a lot of sessions. It was always in tune, and it intonated well. It was a good guitar to have ready with a strange tuning, just in case.

I had a Squire P-Bass when I was in junior high.

I play guitar, I used to have a effects set that would rival most bands. But now I just have my electric (borrowing an amp from a friend) and my ovation acoustic.

Hurst, you're a recording engineer? Mind if I ask how you got started in the whole thing? I'm sort of pursuing that as a career goal (playing guitar for 9 yrs, bass and piano for about 2) and I write my own stuff too. Just wondering if I would be better off trying to be a musician, or the guy behind the scenes.

3 chords could be a decent song, but with 4 we could have a hit on our hands. just make sure we don't forget the cowbell.

I call "Band's Financial Advisor"

No really, going from 2 to 3 is a 33% return. Anybody who tells you different is just after my 17%! Erm, I mean the imaginary 17% for people who do "New Maths" and -think- you're getting a 50% return. Honest, they're wrong!

God help you if you try and play in tune with me.

I play the bass, poorly, by ear only. I basically keep a beat and throw in a few random things every once in awhile. Sometimes they sound passable, most of the time I cringe at myself.

And let's not start at how god awful I am at the guitar.
