OT: Are NFL coaches (like Gibbs) wasting timeouts?
Interesting article from King Kaufman. I've wondered about this sort of thing myself for years...

It's a bug in the AI. They should work that out in time for the 2006 season.

It's easy to say all that after the fact.

"According to Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders, who can figure these things out from four years' worth of play-by-play data from every NFL game, when a team has first-and-10, they get the next first down without turning the ball over or running out of downs 68 percent of the time. On first-and-15, that figure drops to 58 percent."
That's a surprising stat to me. I would've guessed the 1st and 15 figure to be a lot lower. |

I have always been of the belief that on many occasions, a team should just take the delay of game. Obviously, 4th and 1 you need to call the TO, but 1st and 10...in FG range? I said it when it happened (although I was alone in the room) - the Skins should have just taken the penalty.
also, Al Michaels hinted at in on one of the TOs, but the Washington plays seemed to be really slow to get into the game - lots of time, they got to the line of scrimmage with just barely enough time to get the play off.

I made a lot of remarks about clock managment last night. The 'Boys made 2 stupid challenges during the games (ones that had such slight chance of success that they weren't worth the risk), but at least they tamed it a bit in the second half.
Clock management is generally underrated (or completely overlooked). I think teams really need a dedicated assistant to tell coach's when/why to call timeouts. There was a situation in the Giants-Browns game this weekend that the Giants totally botched. The Browns were around midfield with the ball and the clock was at :15 and ticking down on 4th down. Coghlin seemed to assume the Browns were just going to let the clock run out and started walking off the field. Butch Davis then just waited until it was at :3 seconds, called a timeout, and sent the boys out for a hail mary. If the Giants had just called a timeout before :10 or so, the Browns have to punt, and have no chance at a miracle TD before the half. In that situation it didn't kill the Giants, but that sort of thing could end up really hurting a team. |
