Great Day In SoCal Yesterday...

This board was down, so I didn't get a chance to talk about it, but wow, what a great day for Southern California baseball yesterday. In fact, what an hour.

I had to leave for work early in the Angels game (it was 0-0 in the third when I left). When I finally walked into work just after 4 p.m., I looked up and happened to see the last pitch by Percival that Byrnes lifted for a flyout to left and the last out. So I got to see the Angels celebrate, even if I missed all the key moments of the game.

Then all attention was turned to the Dodgers. And that game was just incredible. Finley hit the granny just 35 minutes after the Angels won, and the place (I work in a restaurant and bar) exploded for a second time.

Only three times in baseball history has two teams from the same "area" clinched for the playoffs in the same day: Yanks and Dodgers in '49, A's and Giants in '89, and now yesterday for the Angels and Dodgers.

This is also the first time that the Angels and Dodgers have qualified for the same postseason.

Looking forward to a fun October.

Too bad the Raiders had to screw up today. Still I'm very happy to have the Dodgers in the postseason.

Congrats CR on the Angels. I'm still in disbelief the A's could mess that up, they usually don't choke until the playoffs.

Chief (and others): let me ask a question. There have been a great (childish) debate on the Padres board about whether their season was a success or failure. On one hand you had a 25 game improvement in the win column, in the playoff race until the last week of the season and a very positive situation at Petco. On the other hand, fans blamed Bochy for many losses, KT for not making trade deadline deals and Moores for being a tight-wad and the claim that the Pads should have certainly made the playoffs. What is your opinion?

I'd say it was a successful season for the Padres. They have some nice young players and should keep on improving if they can make some smart moves.

Bucc, I'd say it comes down to what Arizona was asking for San Diego from Finley, because I'm of the opinion that, had they had Finley instead of Payton, the Padres certainly could have made the playoffs. If the price was reasonable, then maybe you start blaming Towers.

If, on the other hand, Arizona wanted the sun and moon (with the Brooklyn Bridge thrown in), given that Finley is considered likely to sign with San Diego in the offseason, then standing pat becomes the right move, and you have to give SD kudos for their improvement with a young roster in a new ballpark. They'll be in good shape going forward.

As a Giant fan, I'm sad to see the season end, but I'm pretty happy kinda. One reason is because next year we should be a much better team. We'll be able to get rid of big contracts like J.T. Snow's and Rob Nen's. That will free up some money and go get help in the bullpen and maybe add a bat. Some would say that Snow and Nen are huge loses, yes they are, kinda. Pedro Feliz has a lot of potential and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets to start at first next year. Robb Nen's career looks to be over and it looks like the Giants will just let him go. We need bullpen help, a closer and another hitter at RF or SS (Nomar perhaps???).

Snow's big contract ended last year. He signed for some like $1.5 million this year, which was one of the best bargains in baseball.

Oh, I thought it was the last year of his big like 4.5-6 mil contract. I'm totally misinformed. I guess it will be a very tough decision whether to keep him or not.
