Request for Good Thoughts... (work situation)

Well, as I said to one of my friends.. "Sometimes I wish I wasn't so forgetful. Sometimes I wish I was MORE forgetful".

This is one of those times on both counts.

About a year ago, I got this job as a contractor through Siemens Small Business Services at EMC. I love the job, I do a pretty damn good job at it, and business is good, they're bringing on more people at EMC.

However, that brings us today.

I get a 2nd reminder at work that my computer access is expiring, and that I need my manager to vouch for me. At that time, it hit me that my contract to take this job stated that unless I was brought on full-time by Siemens or took a break of 100+ days, my employment with Siemens would end no later.. then October 6th.

(looks at calendar).. Uh-oh.

Now, I have not heard anything at work that would indicate that I wouldn't be offered another year, or be brought on at EMC full time, or brought on by Siemens full-time.

But then again, neither have I heard anything that would indicate that I'd still have a job after today.

So, right now, my stomach is doing freaking somersaults all over the place. It took five months to get a job last year.. my CobraServ expires as of November (although it should only cost like $50 more a month just to pay it all myself).. and I'm more nervous then a long-tailed cat in a room filled with rocking chairs.

I'd appreciate any and all good thoughts/etcetera you guys may have.

Best of luck! It sounds like you're not the only one who wasn't keeping track.

Yeah, I think I just fell through the cracks. I realizes this at 5:45 PM, 15 minutes before the end of my shift, and sent an email, but got no answer, they weren't in the office

Good luck...as was posted before, you weren't the only one who forgot; however, as it was said many times to me: you are your best career manager.

Or as I said to my lieutenants: I'll always care about you, but nobody cares more about you than you.

Here's another cliche: Hope for the best and plan for the worst.

I'm pulling for you, Foz.

that sucks, good luck with whatever happens. Are you just going to show up at work tomorrow, or what? You could act like George on that Seinfeld episode where he went to work after quitting and pretended the whole thing never happened.

You just better hope that there's a glitch in payroll and that you keep getting a check...

Seriously, hope things work out well for you, Foz...

Sometimes these things are an opportunity, SirFozzie.

In 1981 Siemens were also involved in losing my job - I had to move to Munich to keep it. Instead I chose redundancy during which I decided I should upgrade my programming skills and wrote a program as part of the learning process. That program turned out to be the first soccer management game and I found a lifestyle that knocked my previous one into a cocked hat.

So again, sometimes these things turn out for the best. Best of luck anyway.

Best wishes, Foz.

And regardless of how things turn out, I think you should continue to show up for work. You should most especially continue showing up for work if they let you go. It might creep them out just enough to keep paying you so you don't wig out on 'em.

UPDATE:

Well.. this day did not start off on the best of notes.

I come in, and cannot log into my computer to check if Siemens has responded to my note. My account's expired.

*gulp*

Go to my boss's boss and ask if they can get me set up again. He promises to see what he can do. Not exactly promising, it's kinda like being under a guillotine, looking at the executioner, and wondering if/when he's going to pull the lever.

Well, about 20 minutes later, my boss's boss's assistant pokes his head into the call center.. "David.. can I talk to you for a few minutes?"

Uh oh.. dead man walking... dead man walking..

I head into his office, and he shuts the door.. thankfully he makes it quick and painless.

(drama king, ain't I?)

"I talked to the computer group and got that no access thing fixed for you, you should be able to log in..."

(big huge freaking sigh of relief..)

"Oh.. I forgot.. but Ron (my boss) noticed how you stepped in on the cases and the dial homes after we bumped three guys up.. (3 of my fellow contractors had been hired as Level 1 Engineers and hired full-time) and helped our new hires... and just wanted to give you something as a way of saying thank you..."

in the envelope he handed me was a $50 gift check.

I later talked with Ron and he again praised my work ethic and the fact I'm willing to go the extra mile.. and agreed to get me more training in an attempt to get me on here full-time (my computer access was extended six more months, and we also found out there's going to be more contractors hired to replace the three bumped up).

Whew. Sunndenly, the four hours of sleep doesn't seem so bad.

Oh.. just to make it official, here's the response from my contact at Siemens..

I will follow up but I don't think there is anything for you to do except continue as you are going to the account for work.

So thank you very much for the good thoughts. It really helped. You guys Rock.

Nuf Said.

Woo. $50 gift check is good.

Full-time employment would be (will be?) better.
