The Shins

I bought both albums, and I think I like Oh, Inverted World more. My favorite song off that album so far is Caring is Creepy, first track.

Thanks for the mini-reviews over at BeL, I think I got 2 new cds to listen to for a while.

Have you purchased the new Old 97's CD? I have no idea if you like them or not but I know you were asking about the Rhett Miller CD awhile back so I figured I'd ask.

I think the second album is vastly superior.

wELL, I've only listened to both cds probably twice but there are immediately three songs from the first one that I find myself really enjoying. I'll listen to both through and through on my drive home this weekend.

As for the Old 97's, I've only heard one song from them, the one in the Madden commercial, which admittedly, I like a lot.

Is the CD good? I might pick it up.. why not.

Just got a Senses Fail cd from my brother.. probably not any of your cups of tea. My brother comes in this Tuesday when I was home for the election and asks "Do you like Senses Fail?".. I'm like.. "Uhh, I don't know?".. he's like... "You do now." and gives me their cd, so I'll have to squeeze that into the playing time as well.

Well I like it, but Old 97's are more country tinged than the RM solo album so YMMV.

I'll have to give The Shins a try. The description from allmusic sounds interesting.

Shorty has heard of (and likes!) Ben Kweller, so he's all right in my book.

I'd love to do somthing like this, but I don't have the time, expertise, or patience. I tried doing it just for my bootlegs, and gave up after a while.

BTW, I haven't made it very far down your list, but I MUST get a copy of that Wes Cunningham CD. I have Pollyanna, which I listen to at least 3 or 4 times a month.

Oh, Inverted World is the better album, but both are fantastic. Did you just get both recently because you've been missing out for quite a while now.

Is pretty nice, I have both Music and Movie. It does all the lookups for you on the album info. The movie one is really nice since you can get the plot write up straight from All Movie Guide.

the first shins lp is really nice, i never got around to picking up the second one though. the first song off the first lp is really different to the rest, kind of reminded me of sunny day real estate at times (which the rest of the album didn't!).

I haven't had time to listen to the new TBS yet, I only somewhat liked the last album.

Free All Angels is probably their best album, and luckily I don't think they fucked with the track order on the US release. Their new album is solid (been out in the UK for like 6 months, I order all their shit import the day of release). I'm easily one of the biggest fans out there, I have every single single their first album. Some of their best stuff are the b-sides from Nu-Clear Sounds and Free All Angels. Theres easily another two entire albums of materials there.

Unfortunately they've been disastorously mismanaged in the United States, and dropped by multiple labels. They'll go down as one of those bands that the USA just basically missed out on. They are quite popular in the UK though.

It's funny when people are kind of just finding them. This was a band I got into in my junior year of high school, 8 years ago.

oh, and Ben Kweller's second album (On My Way) was a serious disappointment. The first is far better.

wow, and dan I think you're the only other person outside my own circle of friends that has heard of Ozma. It took me a bit to get into Spending Time on the Borderline, but I know think it's probably their best album.

and I don't know if any punk band had a better run than:

Live Fast Diarrhea
The Quickening
Hiter Bad, Vandals Good

If you don't have it, you have to get those two earlier albums. Though Hitler is good, those two blow it out of the water.

Special Goodness? damn. I'm one of the lucky few that has the Japanese only release that came out in 1998. A few of those tracks are rerecorded on the album you have.

I put on a Special Goodness show at Rutgers in 1999. Pat Wilson was an alright guy, but I got into a serious argument with he and Mikey Welsh (special goodness and one-time weezer bassist). That guy was a dick to the extreme. They basically violated the terms of our agreement, so we only paid them 60% of what they were originally scheduled to earn. I still have an email from Pat Wilson saved in my inbox.
