FOF question - who is the better QB?

Just an interesting poll to see what everyone thinks.

In our IHOF league, there's no less than 9 QBs that could claim to be the best in the league. Do you go for the guys with the higher passer rating? The most tds? The most yards? The improvement in records? The 9 candidates are below, with a little blurb about each.

8. David Conti QB NPL 16 553 336 60.8% 4160 7.52 31 23 260.0 85.4. This 3rd year pro led his team to a 12-4 record, Divisional Champs (11-5 last year).

9. Jaime Canter QB CHE 15 617 356 57.7% 4045 6.56 25 15 269.7 80.9. This 16 year veteran led his team to a 12-4 record, Divisional Champs (13-3 last year).

He played all 16 games, passed nearly 60% and has a nice TD/INT ratio.

I'm tempted to say that there's not enough data here (I'd like sacks and rushing yards in particular). But I won't cop out that way.

There seem to be three groups here. Canter and Irvine are in the bottom group, as their yards/pass and INT% are CLEARLY inferior to the others.

In the top group are four guys where aren't very far apart. I'd rank them:

1. Johnson
2. Williamson
3. Peterman
4. McMasters

The other three are in the middle group, a notch below the top four, and a notch above the other two.

Interesting analysis. You seem to prefer QB rating over touchdowns and yards.

I do want to correct one thing you stated. Irvine and Canter's INT percentages are 2.4%, which places them in a tie for 5th on that list - dead center of the group. Davis (3.2), Woods (3.1) and Conti (4.2) have far worse INT %. Of course, the top 4 in TD % are (in order): Irvine (5.7%), Conti (5.6%), Davis (4.9%) and Woods (4.4%). For comparsion, the guys you listed have the following TD percentages: Johnson (3.3%), Williamson (3.6%), Peterman (3.4%) and McMasters (4.0%). Risk and reward, I guess.

Most Valuable Player would have to be Irvine, but I wouldn't say he's the best quarterback of the bunch.

I don't, actually. It only seems that way because QB rating takes into account yards per pass, which I think is the most important stat. Interception percentage is #2. TD passes are way down the list (it's largely influenced by coaching decisions) and total passing yards is irrelevant.

This is part misreading of the stats, for which I apologize, and part poor phrasing, for which I also apologize. What I should have said is, "Irvine and Carter are inferior to the others because their yards per pass is much lower than the others, and their interception % isn't low enough to make up for it."

I've been thinking of Irvine - Peterman - Conti as the 1-2-3, as they will be my All MIJB selections (forn my IHOF dynasty I make a list of the 53 stand-out players in the league each season).

What catches me is that in this poll John McMasters is doing so well, while over at the IHOF forum, McMasters was being overlooked (as well as Joe Johnson).

Edit: It's good to know that we have bigger MVP candidates at other positions, chosing between these nine is almost impossible.

Conti also had 500+ rushing yards on a 6.2 yard average and 4 touchdowns. I don't know that you get a complete picture without rushing info, fumble info, and maybe even sack info.

Yeah, I didn't really think he can hang with the elite in the league yet (or ever for that matter), but he did manage to have a 7-6 record starting this year. I guess he'll have to settle for being better than Air Force One.

It's closer to 86 actually, and of course with 166 more attempts, with Hicks getting half a yard more per completion. And of course Dwight is getting ready for the playoffs, who wouldn't be when riding the coattails of a back who gained 2000 yards and scored 19 total touchdowns. Sure Astoria has the better team than Minnesota, but I'm sure Hicks will be more than willing to give Dwight some pointers after he gets home from Miami.

Talking of Seth 'AFO' Dwight in this thread is makes so much sense and is not plain insulting to the nine names mention in this poll. The guy is an amazing 12th in completion percentage, 25th in yards per attempt, 14th in touchdown passes and has only the 13th highest interception total in the league. And of course he made up with an amazing 198th place in rushing yards. I mean, he was the second best rookie quarterback of the season!

Before people get caught up in the 9 game turnaround, realize that there were SIGNIFICANT changes to the team as a result of trading away the 1st overall pick, and then the 2nd overall pick for substantial players (Irvine included in them). Irvine played well, but he was not the only reason for the 9 game turnaround. He brought in a better cast of supporting players as well as having a starting RB not go down to injury early in the season. Irvine had a great year, but Peterman gets my vote.

LOL. H.A. is apparently oblivious to the fact that defensive awards have not been announced yet. Drumm could definitely play some defense though, the dude just loves to play ball.
