Need Help With Enamel Paints..Pinging Model Enthusiasts

Ok, for the past few years i've been thinking of trying to customize some of my old wrestling figures, I found a basic enamel paint set in walmart 2 years ago and painted a couple of my old figures, some came out ok, some were blotchy, i knew that I was doing something wrong and gave up on the idea as is my MO.

Fast forward to now, I've just purchased a bulk lot of old figures and seriously want to do some customizing on these babies but i have zero knowledge in how what I need to do to make things look good, the painting and design part I can handle, its the specs of the actual paints that i need help with and I figured maybe somebody(ies) here could point in the right direction,

Question 1- Ive read about adding thinners to enamel paints before using them, but i have no idea what this means.

Question 2- The figures are hard plastic, 20 years old with paint already on them, heres an example

I used this pic to show an extreme example of paint on a figure already, obviously some only have paint on regular tights, not long tights.

What would I go about using to remove the paint already on the figure, or is it even possible, would I just have to apply a few coats of a lighter colored (white?) base and then start from there?

Question 3- Is their something that i should add to the figure once i'm done painting to preserve it, make it more illustrious etc..?

Question 4- And this is the bigee, does anyone know of a place online that has a detailed inventory of paints that I can look at it and see what i'm buying etc.? Ive gone thru 20 sites but most seem to take into account that you know what you're doing and just have a list of colors, no images or anything.

I let my girlfriends kids play with them, I talk to them about the history of each wrestler, give them a look into my childhood and what I used to play with, use them as a bonding tool.

And sometimes when i'm alone I print out card posters and set up MP3's of each guys entrance music and spend 2-3 hours having a super bash PPV event or TV show, and I keep detailed booking plans so that I can lead into my next show...................

what's 25% of 50%? that's a small percetnage of heterosexuality. so does that make one like 5%? i'm being lazy with numbers today. this is a serious math question, btw, i don't want to turn this into a sexuality/morality discussion like that Alexander thread turned into.

I have been doing some miniature painting of late, and I have been using acrylic paints. They are water soluble, and therefore easier to work with. You won't have to use thinner to work with them. To protect the finish once you are done there are a number of matte or gloss acrylic sealers or finishes that will make the paint job stand up to handling.

I'll find some links to some of the painting sites, and post them for you later. The people there will be much more knowledgeable than most folks here.

suicane: I can give you some advice, If you are really serious about painting with enamel on models, or whatnot, I would reccomend getting an airbrush and a small compressor. It will make the paint look so much more better, because you can apply a much more even coat of paint. You can make the finished product look better by applying some sort of clearcoat over the paint.

Glengoyne, thanks for the links. I've already placed an order for the essentials i'll need to do 1 or 2 figures and see wether i have the acumen for continuing and that first site helped me out a ton.

Airhog, depending on how do with basic painting i might move on to that, i'm just trying to get my feet wet right now.

Hell Atlantic, St. Johns sucks.

Suicane: I put together some car models, and after half-way I decided next time to go strictly airbrush, for the reasons I stated above. I hate having to paint something 4 or 5 times by hand when it takes twice as long
