Anyone know how to crack wireless networks?

So I'm stuck in the hospital today, while my wife is treated for complications relating to a stent she had installed about a month ago.

There's wireless access points all over the place. I have an Intel Wireless Pro 2200BG built into my HP notebook, and it's detecting the network, but I don't have any way to authenticate myself on it.

I know there are ways to break into these... anyone have any quick tips?

Um, you want tips on how to break into a Hospital network? I'm not sure I want to post something like that publically (assuming, of course, I actually had any practical knowledge of how to do this).

I definately don't want to be telling people how to break encryption but I do know WEP has been broken which is why WPA came about (and I'm sure that will be broken, too). That said, the laws about breaking into others networks are pretty shoddy. They really need to be created/fixed as what he's asking may not even be against the law, as hard as that is to believe. That's one of the things they tell you when you set up a wireless network- the reason you're secure is because there's probably not someone within 100' looking to break into your system with any good knowledge, not because it can't be done.

EDIT: Btw, I thought you couldn't have cell phones in a hospital, much less a wireless LAN connection.

I think the cell phone rules are pretty lame... there's WAP's every 20 yards here.

And, you're right... the laws about it are ambiguous, at best. I have no intention of stealing patient data, or doing anything other than basically surf the internet for short periods of time. I'm doing it right now over the phone line.

Airsnort is a pain in the ass. Or, I should say, is more technically complicated than I have the means to employ. So, I guess I'm sticking with dial-up for now.

What about the new HIPPA laws/rules they have in place? Have they taken tougher stances on such things?

I work for a healthcare company. HIPPA basically says the hospital has to protect and audit access to patient healthcare information - so, basically, we keep our servers and mainframes locked down, and we log every instance where patient information is accessed.

Our wireless networks have a simple web authentication scheme - they're not very secure. Most organizations set theirs up so that the WEP gets you on the internet, but you still have to VPN to get to the internal network. So, you can grant access to visitors without letting them on the internal LAN.

They may or may not be doing something like that here at the hospital. Basically, all I need is to get past the first layer of encryption - I have no interest in surfing the private network... just the public wireless LAN that they're broadcasting over a public radio frequency.

Takes some time.

Those guys (Shmoo Group) rule. Met them at a convention in Vegas last year. Fun to drink with, too. The lovely little rifle-looking thing they made that finds wireless hot spots just rules.
