A Novice FOF2k4 Dynasty

I call this a novice dynasty because I have basically no in-depth football knowledge. What I do know I learned here for the most part. I will use v5.1a, Wall Street level. My team will be the Miami Dolphins. I will sim 2004 and start 2005 with an "empty cupboard" style team. My only house rule to start is no trading players in the last year of their contract unless the AI initiates the trade. I am trying this out in hopes it increases my attachment to my team to chronicle it this way, but with a little luck somebody else will enjoy reading this.

I’d like to find an equivalent scout with a higher young talent rating since I’m starting from scratch, but there isn’t one available. I’d also like to replace OC MacPherson and that poor rating in running backs, but the only available better option has a $3.5 million/year offer after the first round and I don’t think a team doomed to losing seasons for 3-4 years needs to pay that much for an OC.

Per empty cupboard rules I cannot participate this year.


Draft:

Thanks to a poor season in 2004, I draft 11th in all rounds. In my first look at the draft pool, one player catches my eye: Cedric Ruff, a WILB rated at 47/86. Linebackers rated in the 80's are very rare, and I wonder if my scout is just that far off. Ruff's combine scores (4.60 dash, 38 solecismic, 32 strength, 7.12 agility) say otherwise, however. But, I have needs in all positions and plenty of quality is available in this draft, so I elect to just sit at #11 and see what falls to me.

Round 1: and lo and behold, Ruff is still available. I take him without hesitation.

Round 2: I had my eye on Michael Henry TE 54/74 (dash 4.82 solecismic 34 strength 35 agility 7.42) and he is still there. I pick him and convert him to a 41/65 FB.

Round 3: Another guy I was watching, C Brad Strong 40/52 (dash 5.06 solecismic 33, strength 35 agility 7.75). Drops to 39/50 after draft.

Round 4: Can’t believe this guy is still left: Lenny Santana TE 35/67 (dash 4.28 sole 29 str 24 agil 7.20). Drops slightly to 34/66.

Round 5: Time to look for a bargain QB. Out of several with potential I select Norm Hastings 11/52 (dash 4.57 sole 39 str 10 agil 7.41), final call based on his high solecismic rating.

Round 6: My second choice QB is still there, Eric Branch 15/49 (dash 4.51 sole 22 str 20 agil 7.44). Liked his freakish strength. Drops to 15/46.

Round 7: Possibly the steal of the draft, WILB Luke Berry 27/49 (dash 4.78 sole 41 str 23 agil 7.46). Why he was still there in round 7 I don’t understand.

The draft rating gives me a B-.

Good News:

Obviously, a two-win season was twice as good as I hoped. At one point, we were at .500 .

7th round pick WILB Luke Berry was a big surprise, with 129 tackles, 40 assists, 1 sack, 1 int, and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

First round pick SILB Cedric Ruff did not disappoint, with 109 tackles, 49 assists, 1 sack, and 1 int.

QB Norm Hastings performed passably well for a rookie QB with no offensive line, going 216/401 for 2270 yards, 9 TD, and 12 INT, while enduring 35 sacks.

CB Adrien Samuels stepped up with 5 INT, 6 passes defensed, and 59 tackles.


Bad News:

The loud sucking sound in Miami was us. There were several games where we didn’t make 250 yds total offense.

FB Michael Henry missed six games with two minor injuries. I’m afraid he’s going to be one of those guys who never has a complete season. He also averaged 3.64 yds/rush.

Henry’s yds/rush was the highest of our regular rushers.





Next year will probably be more of the same, as there will still be essentially no free agents available to me under empty cupboard rules. However, I do have the #1 overall draft pick, and I will likely trade down for more picks.

2006 Preseason



We begin this season with modest goals. I would like to upgrade my scout, and possibly my OC as well. Since the only position I really have locked in is MLB (and I’ve got two good ones) I will be going with best available in the draft. The only FA’s available to me in the early round will be undrafted 2^nd year men , so there is only a slim chance of a significant FA signing. My embarrassment of riches at MLB gives me an interesting decision. I don’t really need 2 good MLBs at this stage of my team’s development, and I think Luke Berry probably hade a fluke season. He looks solid but not spectacular according to the scout. If I can’t sign him to a long contract for cheap, I am considering trading him for draft choices while the memory of his Defensive RotY is still fresh. If I get a better scout I’ll look at his new ratings and re-evaluate. Lastly, I’ll trade down in the 1^st round of the draft as many times as I can and still get an impact player.

Staff Hiring

No better scout is available. I make offers to a head coach and an OC. I am outbid by 1.5 million on the head coach and 650k on the OC, so 2006 begins with the same staff as last year.

Ticket Prices

Due to my low payroll, the Fins made $87 million last year. I leave ticket prices unchanged, hoping to buy back some of the fan loyalty I am losing because we stink.

As expected, no significant improvements to my feeble team are available here.

SLB David Bernstein 15/40, an RFA, signs a 2-yr, 840k contract.





Draft

The draft is weak this year. Lots of OL guys, a couple DL guys at the top, and 3 QB’s with potential in the yellow range (highest is 74).At this point I don’t want to use a round 1 pick on a lineman. The potential standout to my eye is RB Carlton McMurdo 55/59 sole 42 dash 4.55 str 15 agil 7.22. He has low volatility and his bars look good. He will likely be my target, but I am going to stick to my plan of trading down as many times as I can to get more picks.

I trade pick 1(1) to Tampa for 1(4), 1^st & 4^th rds in 2007, and 1^st rd in 2008.

I then trade 1(4) to Tennessee for 1(12), 2(12), and 7(12). I was pretty disappointed in the lack of interest in my 1(4) pick. I’ll stop here and take what falls to pick 12.

1(12): My plan has fizzled. Lots of good OL guys left and a couple QBs whose bars I don’t like. We gamble and take WR Carlton Plumb 23/54 dash 4.47 sole 20 str 22 agil 6.76. Plumb’s very high (83) volatility and extraordinary combine scores give me hopes of a breakout. He drops to 21/53 after being picked.

2(1): CB Curtis Mahoney 27/61 dash 4.45 sole 23 str 19 agil 7.00. Best non-lineman left.

2(12): Another gamble: S Kendall Carlson 29/52 dash 4.47 sole 22 str 24 agil 7.23. There was several S left with higher potential, but Carlson was the fasted and strongest by a fair bit. I hope to see his ratings climb as well.

3(1): C Orlando McKnight 23/65 dash 5.10 sole 27 str 43 agil 7.75. I have a good C but this guy has good combine scores and way better bars.

4(1): T Vincent Mason 17/46 dash 5.25 sole 32 str 34 agil 7.57

5(1): OLB Barry Codeke 17/41 dash 4.57 sole 29 str 18 agil 7.72. High pass rush technique & play recognition, moderate pass rush strength, 239 lbs. I will use him as a pass rusher out of position at DE, unless a position change will raise his stats.

6(1): QB George Carpenter 14/51 dash 4.69 sole 31 str 13 agil 7.72. Seemed to be the best bet for sneaking a late round QB steal, but drops to 13/48 after being picked.

7(1): CB David Krawczyk 18/40 dash 4.45 sole 16 str 17 agil 6.96. Good bars, good combine scores. Worth a last-round shot for sure. Jumps to 19/43 post-draft.

7(12): MLB Grady Delaroche 20/44 dash 4.81 sole 24 str 24 agil 7.51. I’ve got too many MLBs, but Grady was by far the most likely pick remaining. I’ll try him at OLB probably.

This year I get a C+ for the draft.

In the USER CP (see left top of scree) you can choose Edit Options, then you go all the way down to Miscellaneous setting and change the Message editor interface to Enhaced. That way, all the bolding and formatting will stay.

Even with low expectations, this season was a disappointment. We were wracked with minor injuries; I may have to get a new head coach with a higher Injury rating. My best QB was rated 51.1, nobody averaged over 3.78 YPC, and as a team we took 53 sacks, tied for the league high. The only bright spots were (again) on defense. SILB Cedric Ruff had a league-high 154 tackles, 59 assists, 2 sacks, 3 hurries, and 2 INT, and was named Defensive PotY and All-League 1^st Team ILB. WILB Luke Berry had 105 tackles, 38 assists, 1 sack, 1 blocked pass, and 1 hurry. SS Kendall Carson was Defensive RotY, with 67 tackles, 26 assists, 1 hurry, and 1 INT. I do have the top draft pick (again) next year, and will have access to some free agents for the first time. Next season will be time to sit down and weigh my options and choose a direction for this team.

The Draft

If I can find a stud QB or RB, I will focus on building our offense. Otherwise, D is king. Looking at the draft, I see two roughly equivalent RB’s: Bill Preston 66/70 dash 4.50 str 27 agil 7.19 and Ray Butler 57/68 dash 4.41 str 30 agil 7.08. Preston has 67 volatility and Butler 53; Butler has better combine scores, Preston has a better rating. Either looks to do fine as a marquee back. For QB’s, there are 4 with potential in the 60's & 70's, but two stand out. Marvin Dawkins 32/76 dash 4.72 sole 42 str 14 agil 7.23 volatility VL. He has good scores, the highest potential, and that VL vol almost guarantees he will perform as advertised. But... QB Brad Dunn 14/60 dash 4.59 sole 46 str 24 agil 7.16 vol H. Dunn has the highest combine scores of all QB’s in sole, str, and agil, and is 7^th in the dash. With that high vol, he looks like a breakout star. Looking at the needs of the teams with picks 1(2) and 1(3), I choose to gamble slightly and trade with Buffalo for 1(3) and their 1^st in 2008 and 2009. At 1(3), all 4 of my guys remain. I trade 1(3) to Minnesota for 1(5) and 2(5). Minnesota, whose #1 need was a QB, trades the pick to StL, who drafts a DL. I trade 1(4) to Seattle for 1(8) and 2^nd rd next year. I trade 1(5) to San Fran for 1(9) and 2^nd rnd in 2009. They trade their pick to StL (?), who draft a T. Finally at 1(6), Pittsburg takes QB Dawkins. With pick 1(8), I take QB Dunn. Dunn jumps to 15/69 immediately; a good sign.

Looking over the draft situation, I think I can trade down three or four picks and still get one of the RB’s, and maybe still pick either one. I am feeling a bit guilty, however, about all these trades, and wonder if I have been exploiting the AI. I decide just to draft Preston at 1(9); he seems the better pick of the two.

We are graded at C- for the draft, lowest of anybody. TE Herb Herndon jumps to 34/56 post draft. QB Brad Dunn drops to 10/50 (*@#$!). I probably won’t even sign him now because he’ll want too much. Everyone else holds steady. Looks like Bill Preston has just become the focus of the team.

There are 3 other solid T’s, and quite a few other solid players. The first three picks do not list T as a primary need, and all can meet at least one need with a top tier draftee. I say "What the heck" and wait to see who’s left at 1(4). And the stud tackle goes 1(1).

I am forced to raise ticket prices about 10%. We were lowest in the league, and profits were down close to break-even.




FB Max Green, upon recovery from his injury, is now rated 37/47 and average in all respects. His backup was a good blocker, but little else. I want to keep FB Faneca at TE where he has been highly successful, so I need help here. Another concern is LT Will Banks who still has 10wks to recover from his MCL injury. I fear his skills will drop as well. Otherwise, I have no serious needs and will focus on re-signing players without contracts.

Then I trade 1(2), MLB Marshall Baggett 53/63, and QB Brad Dunn 50/64 for 1(1) and 4(1). Baggett was my #3 MLB anyway, but we had a lot invested in Dunn. Reese better pan out or I just screwed the team for a few years.

2010 Late Free Agency

FB Jimmie Faneca, exploiting his 2-yr reign as 1^st team all-pro, holds out for more money. With Max Green’s ratings drop, Faneca has the leverage to make these demands. I sign him to a 3yr extension, out to 2013, for $18.4mil total.

CB Curtis Mahoney re-signs for 3yrs/min salary - once the #1CB, injuries have reduced him to #5 and I only kept him because he has been with us since 2006.

After some consideration, I extend LG Walter Kozlowski out to 2013 with a 4-yr/$13.5mil contract. This would have been his last year, but at 57/57 I decided he will be the future here.

DE Benjamin Saturday 35/66 signs a 3yr/$3.18mil contract - without intending to, it looks like I will start 2 new guys at DE this year.

Post-Camp

QB Frederick is now rated 21/81 (up 21pts since the draft!), and QB Reese is 20/75. Frederick is now clearly has the better skills (even counting that his kick holding is 40pts higher), so Reese and his frickin’ 24mil bonus will be trade bait soon. And in another bit of good news, QB Norm Hastings, who was our starter way back in 2005, has become a mentor this year. At least for the moment, the future looks good.

2010 Regular Season

I look over the rosters of the teams in our division and it looks like another second place finish for us. We have one of the strongest rosters in the league, with the most depth. The Jets, however, have better starters overall and almost as much depth. Looks like a wild-card again for us, unless Frederick really takes off.

After preseason, I trade QB Bo Schneider 24/54 and DE Bo Corns 48/48 to Tampa for next year’s 2^nd round pick. I trade FB Max Green 39/46 and DE Dana McKnight 45/46 and next year’s 7^th rounder to St. Louis for next year’s 2^nd rounder.

2011 Preseason

2011 starts with wonderful news: RB Bill Preston has recovered from his elbow injury, and his ratings have dropped from 69/70 to 43/45. I can see where an arm injury might affect pass-catching ability or tendency to fumble (although he still is rated 92 in Avoid Drops), but how does it drop his hole recognition from 82/84 to 30? The saddest part is, he remains my best RB. We might need to work on this during preseason.

Early Free Agency

Looking at the draft, I only see real ball-control-type RB, and without a 1^st round pick I don’t know if I can trade up to get him. I will have to try and get somebody in FA, then.
