Getting a mitre saw made me realise how much I also needed a table saw for many of those around-the-house carpentry jobs...

I couldn't see much point in owning many power tools while living in an apartment.

Ah, I remember my first mitre saw ... followed shortly by my first table ... followed by my first shop vac ... followed by my router ... followed by my pneumatic nail gun ...

Welcome to the slippery slope of tool hell. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Just make sure that 3R or GF is nearby a telephone in case you have an accident.

No way, there's still plenty of uses for one in an apartment! How about making custom-sized shelves or something?

By the way, I've been wanting to get a new (not too expensive) cordless drill/screwdriver. Any recommendations?

I've become a big fan of the 19.2Volt Craftsman is selling. I bought the package that came with a drill, trim saw, and light, and it's been worth its weight in gold. My handyman borrowed the drill and saw when his batteries died, and he was impressed with the power. My dad and brother each have a set now, and they also love the drill. Most drills at that power are professional models (i.e. overbuilt to deal with constant usage) that are too expensive for home use. The Craftsman is a nice set built for home use. You can get the drill for under $100, and Sears is always running deals on them.

You can also buy smaller drills for less, but you'll miss the power when, say, trying to fix the outside wooden fence gate that was taken out by the tree in the ice storm and need to drill something into the 4x4 post...
