This to me is the difference between a decent sportswriter, and a god awful one. Rich Lederer is a fairly decent blogger and he recounts his story of discussing HOF balloting with them.

First off being from Philly i have been reading BC forever. About 10 years ago something happened with the guy. He was at one time far and above the best sportwriter i have ever read. I looked forward to reading him every single day. I am not sure what happened (probally just got old and lazy, i think he has always been fat). He just tells you what he believes things to be regardless of reality or facts. When called on the carpet he just makes a whole lot of noise about nothing. I haven't seen him do the local comcast sportnight show in a long time as a few guys actually would debate/question his utter wisdom(i think he will only work with certain people now).

Basically the guy was great but now he just thinks he is.

The thing I love about Conlin is his attitude. When he's right I enjoy his pompous attitude, and when he's wrong I enjoy it even more because it makes for entertaining TV/Reading. I Don't go as far back as Condors because i never got the Philly papers when i was younger so much of my knowledge of him has come from the past 10 years.

That being said, I love his stance on the Phillies and how theyve messed things up, I agree with him, and he is stubbornly old school but i like that too. I remember on DNL he stated his case for not putting Ryan on the first ballot and i found myself agreeing with him.

I'm pretty sure he will only go on DNL with certain people, or certain people will only go on with him. I remember 2 or 3 years ago he and Mark Cram were the only 2 panelists and I forget what the subject was but things got so heated that I though for sure it was gonna come to blows, both he and Cram are very similiar in their stuborness and when they clashed, oh boy did it get contentious, but entertaining.
