grrrr-computer help please

Just as a starter, I am probably competing for least knowledgable about computers at FOFC.

Ok, the problem: Some of my programs are not loading. Examples are TCY, FBCB. I have tried everything I know to remedy the situation(ie reboot, shortcut and normal non-shortcut, using the "run" feature, ect.) Both programs were working fine until today. I have absolutely no idea what to do. The only thought I have is that it could be a memory problem(but that is just a thought my inexperienced brain came up with) Anyway, if any of you knowledgable souls has any idea what the problem is and/or how to fix it, the help would be greatly appreciated.

How did you normally run the programs before? You say they're "not running" - are you getting error messages?

No, they are just not loading. I double click, or try to open it some other way, and the cursor turns into an hourglass, then goes back to cursor and nothing happens. The screen stays the way it was and the program does not appear and it is not listed as a process or application in the ctr-alt-del screen

For starters, have you defragged your hard drive recently?

Thats one of the funny things. I am normally lax about taking care of my computer. About every three months I run adaware and spybot, and about every 6-8 months I defragment. But this came about two weeks after a defragment(I did it over thanksgiving).

Yes, I tried rebooting a couple times. XP Home with SP2.

Oh, and thanks for the suggestions, and sorry I was not here to give you responses.

Is it just TCY and FBCB you're having problems with? Are other programs okay? Are these both elicense games?

As far as I can tell(meaning the programs I regularly use), these are the only two having trouble. Yes both are elicense, but I don't think that should affect the actual loading of something. When I slick on the game(or doubleclick), nothing happens. But the elicense thought could affect it.

I have recently had the same problem when it comes to applying the patches for FOF, specifically 5.1a. I have XP with SP2. The games will run but as I said I can't get the patches to run.

Start --> Run --> type cmd --> type chkdsk /f --> select Y when it asks you if you want to run chkdsk on next bootup

Reboot pc and try running those programs again.

If they still don't run, save your data folders from the games and re-install.

This is a long shot but it may be some corruption in the elicense... try removing it and reapplying it

All right, I've tried everything in this thread, and nothing helps. The game just does not start. Even after reloading. So, I am bumping this and going to post in reply to Jim's thread. Thanks for all of your help

Elicense launches a service at system startup. Did you check to see if the LicCrtl service is running? I had the same problem on my XP machine and solved it by going to administrative tools/services, clicked on LicCrtl and started it.

Kick your pc... really hard.

Then.. buy a new one... load FOF and you should be good-to-go.
