Since this forum has become something of a free-form area for exchanging heaven-knows-what, I thought I'd offer up something useful (hopefully).

If you're looking for that one last gift for someone for Christmas, here is an absolutely wonderful idea:

Robert Sabuda's The Night Before Christmas Pop-Up Book


If, as I'd expect, you are not familiar -- this illustrator/creator Robert Sabuda has basically revolutionized the entire concept of pop-up books. Formerly the domain of children's literature (pull a tab to see the cow jump over the moon, that sort of thing), he has created some marvelous little books, detailing familiar literature entirely in elaborate pop-up form. His creations -- over a dozen of them, I understand -- are absolutely magnificent renditions of well-known stories, with some of the most elaborate type of "pop-up" architacture I've ever seen. They are literally breathtaking.

If you have a family member or friend -- and I am not at all limiting this to children by any means - who might enjoy something of this sort, his books would make a wonderful gift. The link above is to the Xmas-themed book, but my mother (who now has a decent collection of these) has also really loved the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland renditions as well. They are marvelously intricate -- the artwork is really fantastic. And, to top it all off -- these things are pretty cheap. Amazon is selling them for about $15, or you can probably pick one up at your local bookstore for no more than $25.

Shopping for someone hard to please? If they might appreciate anything in this genre at all (coffee table book, conversation piece, "cute" stuff generally) then this is a very likely home run. These books are really impressive -- great gift stuff.

for anyone looking into purchasing electronic gadgets (namely digicams), i found the sweetest website for it: www.newegg.com. i bought my wife a 5 megapixel Sony T1 (that really small and thin digicam that's like the size of a credit card, she had grown tired of the first bulkier digicam i got her 2 years back). it retails at stores for $500+ (more like in the $500-$550 range).

i got it for exactly $412.95. no tax, no shipping. they include FedEx Express Saver which is a 3-4 day delivery service. i got it in exactly 3 days. i was a little worried cuz i never heard of them before, but after reading all the customer reviews on a 3rd party site - i do extensive research on any purchase - i took the risk and was very satisfied. they send multiple emails to you detailing the status of your order. i like how you don't have to hunt them down to get information. very thorough system they have. my only gripe is that they left the package in front of my doorstep. in NYC that might not be the smartest thing to do, but i venture that's more of FedEx's fault than newegg.com's fault.

Buyer Beware: doing research on the new Bon Jovi boxed set i found out that it's not a "greatest hits" box set. it's an unreleased songs boxed set. you might want to keep that in mind if you were planning on getting that for someone. i'm glad i looked into it.

at $15 a pop (QS meant $15 a book) Fritz thought it'd be funny to play stupid and ask if you have to pay per pop-up how much would the book come out to.

unless i read it wrong...i doubt it.
