We currently have DirectTV, and have discussed the idea of getting Tivo. Can someone please describe exactly how it works and what we'll need to get?

directtivo is awesome
call your directtv and order the directtivo from them.. they have a special like 49 bucks and free installation..they will give you a free multiswitch they put on the satalite, so you will be able to record two channels same time and watch something you had recored before, or you can watch one channel and record another channel. you will love it.. What you need is a new receiver. You then need to connect two coaxial cables to the back of the receiver so you can record 2 shows at once. It then records to a hard drive and you select the shows from a menu. It then works exactly like a regular Tivo where you can program your shows based on a titles, keywords, etc.

Go to the DirectTV web site and purchase the TiVo DVR/DirectTV tuner. A technician will come out to your house and install it.
Right now you can get it for under $50. http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/get_di...tvwithTiVo.jsp The only requirement, I think, is that you have a dual lnb dish. The monthly subscription fee is $5 and that covers additional TiVo/DirectTV tuners if you are so inclined.

The only thing you'll need to get is a Direct TV Tivo (or DVR) receiver. It replaces one of your current direct TV receivers (or you can add it as a new receiver if you want). There's a nomial fee for the Tivo service. I think it's like $2-5 per month. That's really all you need. edit - man, got beat twice. Last edited by moriarty : 12-13-2004 at 09:18 AM. |

Uh, yeah, you could go directly to that link too.
![]() You will need two feeds to have the two receiver setup work. If you are going to have a receiver(s) in addition to this one, you will also need a multiswitch. We just had our second tivo "installed" Friday, and the tech upgraded our 3x4 multiswitch (takes 2 lnb inputs and a cable input (opt) and has 4 outputs) to a 3x8 multiswitch, no charge.

mmmmmm, directTV and Tivo. This surely has to be one of the best parts about moving out of a directTV-unfriendly apartment. Ours is getting installed Dec 27th

And if you have the Sunday Ticket and a DirectTV unit, you get a nice little NFL highlight package recorded for you every Monday morning. |

Don't worry about the multiswitch - the technician will supply that...

I suppose I didn't mention that the tech did indeed supply a 3x4 for our first TiVo (even though we already had one...).
