Racism in hockey

Just heard this on the news...During a game in St.
Petersburgh,Russia a fan threw a banana at Anson Carter who was playing for the NHL all-stars against a team of Russian all-stars.

How horrifiying.

My little brother played junior in the Quebec league with Peter Worrell and he faced similar antics when they were on the road in some of the smaller towns...I was witness to one such game and I was absolutely disgusted.

In retaliation, he scored two goals and beat the crap out of the other team's tough guy. Great stuff.

If there is any good news in this mess, Carter noted that the incident was the first racial incident in which he was involved since the early '90s at Michigan State. That's a good thing for the NHL, even though there have been other incidents since then (the Vinny Prospal incident comes to mind).

Not to threadjack, but I read during Worrell's rookie AHL season in New Haven that he could not skate backwards while playing in the QMJHL. That still astounds me.

The Prospal incident

The aftermath

As for Ray, no he can't skate either.

Finally, how did DD's post in reference to my own wind up before my original post? Some funky things going on in this thread.

Wasn't Anson Carter involved in some incident with Chris Simon? Or was that another black player?

No. That was Mike Grier. My mistake...

That "aftermath" link is great! What a reaction from Vinny "Vaclav" Prospal's agent. Classic stuff. I don't agree with everything he says, but it does sound like Breibois blew the whole thing out of proportion. Then again, I may not be sensitive enough to the insult, even though my last name is French-Canadian.

Sure, but I didn't make the connection. It's been a while.

Maybe that's all the guy had to throw and he'd just seen Slapshot?

If I'd just seen Slapshot I'd beat the crap out of a vending machine instead.

I just saw it in Remember the Titans... but it was Denzel doing the throwing.

Ohhh, I see then.

That being the case, I think hurling bananas is probably pretty far down on the list as far as items on Amnesty International's list go.

Oh He's BLAAACK. Now I get it. You were talking about a hockey player, so I had pretty much ruled that out as a possibility.

Yeah, well, those pricks in Detroit have been making fun of 8 appendaged people for years by throwing all those octopi on the ice! Assholes.
