Dolphins courting Nick Saban hard

So tonight the word is Dolphins will offer Saban somewhere between 5-6 million, along with the ability to decide on the GM position. My goodness.

As an LSU fan I think its a 50/50 chance he will leave now.. The job situation is pretty near perfect. I think he wanted to stay till his kids were out of school or until the job offer was absolutely perfect.. Well I guess we will find out soon enough.

I am not too woried about LSU though, given his history with us, it looks like Butch Davis would take the LSU job if offered, and while I think hes a step down from Saban its not a big step down by any means.

So I assume there are people here that think its crazy to offer a college coach 5-6 million and GM say so? I can't say I would disagree all that much.

The rumor mill in town here has Saban a likely target for the Saints job as well. If LSU loses Saban, I really hope it is to the Saints. Most media outlets here in the city think that Saban is going to be offered at least 3 different head coaching jobs in the NFL if not more.

Well it depends on how much stock you put into Sabans background. Saban's disposition, peers, and grooming have apparently rated him as a high probability to suceed by NFL heavy hitters. If you ask me, anyone who hasn't been a head coach at that level yet is a risk. If you are gonna take any kind of risk I actually think there are a lot of decent candidates in the NFL coordinator ranks these days. And there are a couple of big name proven guys that could be available at the end of the year. But lots of guys are convinced hes the next Belichick(or something close.)

Didn't the first three times around for Carroll convince you that he's not cut out to be a top head coach in the NFL?

If I were Saban, the only thing that would interest me about the Saints would be the location and the relatively short relocation. In all other respects, I would expect Miami to be a more attractive job.

Hopefully if Saban comes in, McCarthy gets the boot with Haslett as well. The 95% of the plays to McCallister just doesn't cut it for an O-coordinator. I don't get to see them on TV that much, but when I do, I am watching at a bar with my Saints jersey on in DC, and even the Skins fans are laughing at me, because we can call the plays as it is blatantly obvious it is going to Deuce.

I think that both coordinators will definitely be fired this season. If Haslett agrees to fire them both, there is a slim chance he could keep his job.

However, at that time, Belichick had held only one previous head coaching position. Carroll has now held three IIRC (NYJ, NE Pats, SF 49ers) and shown no signs of making the kinds of improvements that Belichick made between Cleveland and NE.

I think Saban is too much like Belichick. He's harsh and tough and will have a rough time getting the players to buy into his system, initially. I think he is doomed to fail in his first pro job, but wil wind up great as he learns to handle pro players. I'm worried he will waste his time feeling out pro players in Miami only to be great somewhere else. Still, I'd like to see Miami at least take a chance because I think Saban will be great somewhere, maybe he' ll get it right the first time.

I'm surprised that no one called Tigercat on calling Butch Davis a step down from Nick Saban. butch Davis rebuilt Miami and Larry Coker is drving them back in the ground.

Yeah, Butch Davis is an excellent college head coach and excellent NFL coordinator. He is the reason that Miami is back in the running for the national championship every year. He also was the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys for several seasons.

Jimbo might not be ready. Hes goten some HC feelers, but thats about it. I don't think that many think hes quite ready. He may need to work at a small school thats ready to take a chance on him first. I like Jimbo, but hes just not been a big enough part of this program that LSU would be ready to take a chance on him over a guy like Davis. Davis interviewed with LSU in 1999 while still with Miami, fully ready to leave Miami for LSU. The only reason Saban was hired instead is because Davis was honest with the LSU leaders interviewing him and told them he probably wants to try the NFL before too long. Davis made a big impression on LSU leaders then, and vise versa.

IMO, just a slight step down. Davis was a very good recruiter and organizational guy for Miami, but Coker has shown that with the Miami program up and running, it doesn't take much to convince recruits to go to Miami. I only give Saban a slight edge because of his great defensive mind. That said, I wouldn't be all that surprised that if Davis comes to LSU, if he is more successful than Saban.

While Miami is a juggernaut in itself, you must remember that Dennis Erickson riddled the program with sanactions and they had a 7-5 year (I think) with scholarship limits. He basically took a program that was heading to trouble and righted it. I think Miami is still in trouble now with Coker as he's getting talent, but I don't think they'll stay at an elite level still

It will be interesting to see how Miami's move to the ACC will effect the Canes. They are tougher, but I think Miami will still be on top of the game.

Aroo?

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...es/CarrPe0.htm

Caroll only had two head coaching jobs. ONE Year with the Jets and then THREE years with the Patriots (with winnings seasons in two).

I have NO idea where you got the 49ers from? Since 80, they've had Walsh, then Seifert, then Mooch, and now Erickson.

Compare with Belichek.

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...es/BeliBi0.htm

Before NE called, he have 5 years (which is one year than Caroll's career) and only one winning season.

Caroll had a bad season in New York, but that was mostly because of the lack of talent. Then had two winning seasons with New England before falling to .500. Caroll gets a bum rap for his professional coaching career.

I must have been remembering a coordinator position with the Niners, sorry.

Carroll was on a steady downward trend with NE that was righted by Belichick. Good luck finding a NE fan who thinks he didn't get a fair shake.

Frankly I'd blame Bledsoe for that. After leaving for Buffalo, we can see how overrated he was. And the one year that Belicheck had Bledsoe as starter he was 5-11. Hell, if Carroll had Brady, I'm sure he'd have done better.

Blame Bledsoe all you want (I'd say Bobby Grier would be a better choice), Carroll took a young Super Bowl team and in three years it consistently declined, especially on offense, and by the end the players had essentially quit on him. There were only 2 good draft picks in his 3 years (Robert Edwards and Damien Woody) and he was essentially getting by on what he inherited from the Parcells era. Then Belichick comes in, blows it up the first year, starts implementing his guys and his system (along with Weis/Crennel/Pioli) and ignoring the lucky playoff run in 2001, the team has improved in almost every area every year. Carroll is doing great as a college coach at USC, where his players coach style seems to work much better than in the NFL (along with the vast talent edge on most opponents and Norm Chow directing the offense), but any NFL team that would hire him would be incredibly stupid.

If you ever had a chance to listen to Carroll and watch him day to day it was clear he is much better suited to recruiting the coaching up college kids. The pro guys will never have any use for his style and approach.
