A trickier puzzle

Listed alphabetically below are some clues. This is a two-part puzzle.
1. Separate the answers to the clues into their proper eight categories
2. Six clues are unique – why? Which ones?

Adults, children, and clean clothing
Almost four dozen horses
Army ranchers
Barely, oh my!
Bay of communists
Beer and hot dogs
Big but sinkable
Big diggers
Bucking range
Champion cherry tree choppers
Country peanuts
CrO’s
Double trouble
Fish or mammal?
Ford warriors
Head face cards
Large and urban
Lucy Kinsella’s price of corn
Native earthtones
Nice cars
Not mares or turkeys
Papal origins and sheep
Paul, Pat, and Nick
Red-suited rattles
Remember the high-reachers
Sporting marauders
TD was one, only different
They both steal
They give you the willies
Union aircraft
Visa brothers

Hmm, for a moment I thought these might be NFL teams, but there are only 31 of them;

Paul, Pat, and Nick - these could all be Saints ?
Native Earthtones - Browns ?
Remember the high-reachers - Titans ?
Fish or mammal - Dolphins ?

Eight categories *could* be the divisions, but that would be 25 for only 8 categories. Maybe there are some baseball teams?

Double trouble - Twins ??

edit: "Native" earthtones could also be Redskins, I guess...maybe more appropriately.

Maybe the six unique clues are team names that appear in more than one sport: Giants, Cardinals, etc.

Maybe has something to do with College Football teams? The top 25 teams? The 6 left over are teams not in the rankings? Not sure.

Well, if some of these are city references... (I'm still unconvinced)

-This seems like it might be a dual clue -- maybe to the Broncos and Rockies?

Breaking into tentative categories:

TWO TEAMS IN ONE CITY - NFL and MLB
Bay of communists = Bengals and Reds

Native earthtones = Indians and Browns
Not mares or turkeys = Colts and Orioles (...this just in, the Colts moved)
Red-suited rattles = Cardinals and Diamondbacks

NFL FOOTBALL MASCOTS
Paul, Pat, and Nick = Saints
Nice cars = Jaguars
Fish or mammal? = Dolphins
They both steal = Steelers
Lucy Kinsella’s price of corn = Buccaneers

CITY REFERENCES
Big diggers = Boston
Champion cherry tree choppers = Washington
Beer and hot dogs = Milwaukee

Adults, children, and clean clothing
Almost four dozen horses
Army ranchers
Barely, oh my!

I find it hilarious that digamma considers Kansas City not to have a MLB franchise!

There are 31 NFL cities--which would match the 31 clues (as opposed to the 32 teams).

Native Earthtones = Indians & Browns

Maybe the six are six NFL cities without MLB franchises? Green Bay, Jacksonville, Carolina, and now I'm blanking (I don't think we can count Washington anymore).
