FM2005: Seasiders Season IV

Welcome to the 2007-2008 season of the Blackpool Seasiders. The upcoming season will be the third in the Championship League and fourth overall. We've seen steady improvement each season and this season will definitely be our best. This season I'm definitely expecting the club to challenge for a playoff spot for a chance to advance to the Premiership.

I'm picking up the dynasty on August 1st. The friendlies have been played and we're now four days away from our first match of the season. The previous three seasons can be accessed from the links below.

Enjoy.

1 August 2007
- The annual promotion odds from Totalbet.com have been released and this year's favorite to promote is Leeds as 6-4 favorites. The rest of the main contenders are: Charlton 2-1...Norwich 2-1...Wolves 2-1...Birmingham 5-2 and Crystal Palace 6-1. The Seasiders have been given their best odds to promote this season at 25-1. The first season in the Championship we were 50-1 and last season we were 80-1. I'm liking our chances.

2 August 2007
- Belgium international winger Tom Soetaers finally arrived at Blackpool to complete the transfer. Soetaers missed the preseason but should be able to step into the starting lineup at AML right off the bat. We acquired him from Ajax 2 towards the end of last season on a free transfer.

3 August 2007
- The first round draw for the Carling Cup was made today we end up drawing yet another tough 1st round opponent in Stoke...and the match will be played at their place on August 22nd.

4 August 2007
- Plymouth...a new team to the Championship this season...have made a $100,000 offer for backup midfielder Keith Southern. Keith is still an important part to our team and will remain at Blackpool.

Coca-Cola Championship League Match
Preview
We open up the new season at the under-construction Bloomfield Road against a team that we've only won one match in six tries against…Wolves. But pundits have said that this is the best Seasider club to date and Wolves looks like they have a lot of new faces on their side. Let's see how the new squad performs in the opener.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Johnson
Midfield -Soetaers / Davis / Harper / Marney / Routledge
Defense -Crainey / Enakarhire / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:Blackpool1-1Wolves
1st Half Notes
It was a tough first game draw no doubt as Wolves are still a very formidable side. They only allowed us one shot in the 1st half meanwhile putting seven on the board…but the important thing is that the score is all even at 0-0. Keeper Robert Green was the standout for us in the first 45.
2nd Half Notes
We almost pulled this one out by Wolves tied it in dramatic fashion in the 87 minute to make this one a 1-1 draw. The half started out by Robert Green stopping a penalty shot by Seol Ki-Hyeon. Then new acquisition Tom Soetaers lobbed one in from the left side and found John Sutton for a header that gave us a 1-0 lead. But then Wolves got the equalizer as 18 year old Supat Rungratsamee...a raw player with almost no skill...dribbled around Green and put one in an open goal. A switch to the counter attack made the difference for us as we almost pulled this one out.
Goals - John Sutton 75, Supat Rungratsamee 87
Man of the Match - Kevin Cooper - Wolves
Conditions - Dry 75F
Venue - Bloomfield Road, Blackpool
Attendance - 7610

Like Wolves…we haven't had a great history against Crystal Palace. No wins in four matches isn't something we like to gaze at before we go to bed at night. But we're positive after our draw against Wolves in the season opener and we hope to carry that on to today's match. John Sutton...our goal scorer in the last match...will start up front today along with midfielder Keith Southern.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Sutton
Midfield -Soetaers / Davis / Southern / Marney / Routledge
Defense -Crainey / Enakarhire / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:C Palace0-2Blackpool
1st Half Notes
This Tom Soetaers guy that we picked up in the offseason is a ringer…ha. I mean if you can have a ringer at this level of football. He took a ball and went one on one from the left side…shited to the middle…drove past a defender and beat the keeper with a shot just inside the right post. We like this guy.
2nd Half Notes
Wow…I don't know what to say early on. Three of our offseason pickups are performing wonderfully early on in the season. Our left winger Soetaers scored in the first half…then our young winger prodigy Aaron Lennon took lobbed one into the box and Simon Lynch headed it into the goal for a 2-0 lead. Then Robert Green in goal stopped eight shots that were on goal by Palace. Another great showing against a top Championship side.
Goals - Tom Soetaers 18, Simon Lynch 87
Man of the Match - Robert Green
Conditions - Dry 78F
Venue - Selhurt Park, London
Attendance - 23233

+ Physio Report +

- Centre back Wayne Thomas suffered a gash on his leg during Tuesday's match but will only miss about five days. He had to be taken off during the match.
- Hey imagine this...full back Stephen Crainey has injured himself again by twisting a knee during training on Wednesday. He'll be out for another 2 weeks.

Seasider News

- We knew this was coming as midfielder and player of the year James Harper has recently announced that he wants to stay here but he wants an improved contract. I can totally understand since he makes just $3,000 per week. We're already $13,500 per week over the wage budget but let's see what the board says.
- Well we sit down with Harper and his agent and they lay down a new three year deal worth $10,000 per week.. The board is allowing us to give him $9,000 per week. (Well at least they want him around.) Oh and a $48,000 signing bonus. Our new asst manager Colin Murphy says that while he's a useful 1st team member...we could easily replace him and only suggest we offer him $4,600. Let's go somewhere in the middle and offer $7,600.

9 August 2007
- This is good news...James Harper was truthful about staying on here in Blackpool as him and his agent agreed to the new three year deal. Nice. That will keep the supporters happy.

Here's our third big match in three tries. Norwich come into this one not happy about being relegated from the Premiership last year. Now let's see if our good luck can continue into this one. I like our depth this year at midfield and upfront so I think we can continue to compete with the tougher sides well into the season. This match also is intriguing because Robert Green was with Norwich until this season...although their new keeper...Paul Gallacher...ain't too shabby.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Johnson
Midfield -Soetaers / Davis / Harper / Marney / Routledge
Defense -Richardson / Enakarhire / McGregor / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:Blackpool1-1Norwich
1st Half Notes
Well I thought we were screwed early on when Milan Baros made Mark McGregor looked like a 3 year old inside the penalty box and then blazed one by Robert Green just eight minutes into it. But then we settled down and played a very defensive half. Both teams only managed one shot each.
2nd Half Notes
Another spectacular half from the Seasiders. Tom Soetaers sent a crossing shot across the pitch to Wayne Routledge who's initial shot was stopped by Paul Gallacher…but he was able to gather the rebound and pass it off to an open Eddie Johnson and he scored on an open net to tie it up. And that's how it ended. We actually outshot Norwich 4-3 after they came out like a house of fire.
Goals - Milan Baros 9, Eddie Johnson 72
Man of the Match - Paul Gallacher

Well Coventry makes it back to the Championship after spending one season in League One. We have a 2-0-0 career record against them and are coming into this contest pretty confident. We're on the road for this one but are gonna come out attacking initially as I feel we have an advantage.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Sutton
Midfield -Soetaers / Davis / Harper / Montgomery / Lennon
Defense -Richardson / Enakarhire / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:Coventry2-2Blackpool
1st Half Notes
A bit of a surprising first half as Coventry played pretty even with us. We had our chances but couldn't put anything past the keeper. They get one up on us when Steven Davis fouled a player inside the box. Then Gary McSheffrey knocked home the penalty kick to take a 1-0 halftime lead.
2nd Half Notes
We fought hard to make this one even and almost gave that away. I think Eddie Johnson earned himself a starting spot after his performance today. He was subbed in for Sutton in the 65 minute…scored a goal three minutes later to make it 1-1. Then we make a major defensive error after a throw in and give up a wide open goal to Gary McSheffrey...his 2nd of the day. But then just one minute later Eddie Johnson took a pass from Dean Marney and kicked one just inside the left post to end it at 2-2.

Carling Cup 1st Round
Preview
Stoke has gotten off to a great start so far as they lead the Championship League and have not suffered a defeat yet. Keigan Parker has gotten off to a great start for them by scoring four goals in four matches. We haven't had any luck in the Carling Cup yet and it's gonna be hard to get started now in Stoke-on-Trent. Let's see if Eddie Johnson can lead us.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Johnson
Midfield -Soetaers / Davis / Southern / Marney / Lennon
Defense -Clare / Montgomery / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:Stoke0-3Blackpool
1st Half Notes
As surprising as it was…we came out and dominated the first half against the league leaders. Tom Soetaers was on top of his game scoring two goals within the first half hour. We also outshot them 9-3.
2nd Half Notes
It's hard to keep Simon Lynch as the 3rd striker cause he continues to perform when he gets his chance. He scored tonight on a diving header from Dean Marney at the 80th minute to make the final score 3-0.
Goals - Tom Soetaers 5, Tom Soetaers 28, Simon Lynch 80

Rotherham hasn't had the best luck as they have failed to win a league match so far. Due to injuries and the midweek Carling Cup match we have to shuffle the lineup some more and Andrea Guatelli gets his first start at keeper this season. And speaking of keepers we will face former Seasider Thomas Myhre in this contest.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Sutton
Midfield -Lennon / Davis / Montgomery / Marney / Harper
Defense -Richardson / Montgomery / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Guatelli
Final Score:Rotherham0-2Blackpool
1st Half Notes
Another half controlled by the Seasiders. The competition between the three strikers is definitely making them all play well to get more playing time. Today's starter John Sutton took just five minutes to score his 4th of the season as we lead 1-0 at the half.
2nd Half Notes
Solid half here as we stayed defensive and only allowed Rotherham five shots. We add another one in the 70th minute when a Nick Montgomery shot from inside the box deflected off a Rotherham defender and into the net for his 1st of the season.
Goals - John Sutton 5, Nick Montgomery 70
Man of the Match - Emmerson Boyce
Conditions - Dry 53F
Venue - Millmoor, Rotherham
Attendance - 9776

It's our 2nd matchup versus Stoke in less than a week. This time that match is at home. We continue to press on rather well with three starters on the mend. Guatelli is back in goal to get some match fitness and Simon Lynch will start for us up front for our rotating strikers. They're all performing well so we just try to rotate in the freshest one each game.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Lynch
Midfield -Lennon / Davis / Southern / Marney / Harper
Defense -Crainey / McGregor / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Guatelli
Final Score:Blackpool3-0Stoke
1st Half Notes
Simon Lynch has come to play this year. Unhappy towards the end of last season being stuck on the reserve team….he was brought up late in the season to gain some confidence and this season it is paying off. He scored one of two first half goals in a dominating performance. Aaron Lennon scored his first for the club just 12 minutes in on a nice play from Harper to Southern and then Lennon for the goal.
2nd Half Notes
We put this one away early in the 2nd with Steven Davis' first goal of the season just two minutes in. The only mark on the 2nd was a handling error by Andrea Guatelli allowed a lingering Ade Akinbiyi to score but that was all that Stoke could muster.
Goals - Aaron Lennon 12, Simon Lynch 31, Steven Davis 46, Ade Akinbiyi 55
Man of the Match - Keith Southern
Conditions - Dry 50F
Venue - Bloomfield Road, Blackpool
Attendance - 7591

- In somewhat of a surprise Keith Southern was named the Championship Player of the Month. Are we underestimating this guy? He was in there a lot due to injuries and now he takes home player of the month. Good job buddy.
- Aaron Lennon came in 3rd for the Championship Young Player of the Month award.

There's a lot of international action going on this weekend so everyone gets a well needed week off. Our next game is on Sept 8th.
- And some news on the international front. Two Seasiders saw action as Joseph Enakarhire came on as a sub for Nigeria in their win over Zambia. And Steven Davis scored a goal for Northern Ireland vs Andorra.

Well we're finally healthy after a week and a half layoff and we're probably sporting a lineup that's about as close to the envisioned starting 11 at the start of the season. Millwall has had great start to the season as wel. They sit right behind us in the league table at 6th.

James Harper got the boys in the scoreboard in the first half with his first goal of the season. Wayne Routledge found Harper in the box from the right side and Harper smashed it in with his right foot for the score. We outshot Millwall 5-3 in the half.
2nd Half Notes
Despite him being injured I really do like Stephen Crainey. Crainey scored six goals for us last year and got his first of the season on what else???…but a free kick. Millwall played a decent 2nd half and had some chances but couldn't get anything past Robert Green who played well.

Seasider News

10 September 2007
- Emmerson Boyce is named to the Championship Team of the Week...again. This is his 14th appearance on the Team of the Week.
- Reserve striker Matthew Blinkhorn returned from his loan at York of League Two. Blinkhorn didn't like his stay in York and said that he didn't learn much at that leavel. We'll keep that in mind. He did have a fairly successful stint down there scoring four goals in eight games...and he was man of the match once.

12 September 2007
- Well being player of the month certainly does bring a lot of attention with it. Birmingham have now made a $100,000 transfer bid for Keith Southern. Too bad these bids aren't for like a million...then I would certainly listen

Coca-Cola Championship League Match
Preview
Tonight's match is gonna be a tough one as we take on Birmingham for the first time in our brief history. Birmingham just got relegated from the Premiership last season and have only lost one match since the drop. We have yet to lose a match this season and with no mid-week match we're going to stick with the same staring 11 that we played last Saturday.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Johnson
Midfield -Soetaers / Montgomery / Harper / Marney / Routledge
Defense -Crainey / Enakarhire / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:Blackpool3-0Birmingham
1st Half Notes
We came out with an attacking attitude and got bit early when Robbie Savage drove past everyone and scored just five minutes into the game. So then we put our defensive hat on and things started to click. Eddie Johnson scored his 4th of the year when he scored from almost an impossible angle form the left side to even it up. Then Tom Soetaers made one of his now famous runs down the field beating two defenders and scoring the go ahead in the 39th minute.
2nd Half Notes
What can I say about Simon Lynch. The kid fights for playing time…usually doesn't start…but when he does…he scores. He subbed in for Johnson in the 63rd minute and proceeded to score on another diving header off of a Soetaers cross. The only negative in the win is Soetaers went off with an injury right at the end.
Goals - Eddie Johnson 26, Tom Soetaers 39, Simon Lynch 78
Man of the Match - Emmerson Boyce
Conditions - Dry 55F
Venue - Bloomfield Road, Blackpool
Attendance - 7604

+ Physio Report +

- Semi-big blow for us as Tom Soetaers pulled a hamstring during the match and will miss up to two weeks. Aaron Lennon will pick up the slack at wing.

- Back to some news items as Southport from Conference North have made a loan offer for reservist Sean Lawlor. The loans to clubs this low aren't helping my young troops so we will actually decline this invite.

We get another injury blow as new team captain Dean Marney has strained his groin and like Soetaers will also miss up to two weeks.

Carling Cup 2nd Round
Preview
It's on to round 2 of the Carling Cup as we take on Stockport. Stockport was relegated from the Championship last year and are a big underdog in this one. We've had pretty good success against them holding a 3-1-0 career record over them. It's a midweek match so we're throwing out some subs to rest some of our starters and also a couple of our injured guys.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Sutton
Midfield -Lennon / Montgomery / Harper / Davis / Routledge
Defense -Crainey / McGregor / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Guatelli
Final Score:Stockport2-0Blackpool
1st Half Notes
Well we kinda screwed that first half up. Stockport had as many chances as us but they were able to capitalize as Luke Wilkshire knocked one in to go up 1-0. Both teams had six shots.
2nd Half Notes
We really got taken to the cleaners in that one. We gave up too many chances to a lower club and they made us pay by getting the better of us in the 2nd round. Michael Byrne beat centre back Mark McGregor in the box and put one past Guatelli at the 82nd minute to ice the win for Stockport.
Goals - Luke Wilkshire 38, Michael Byrne 82
Man of the Match - Andy Welsh
Conditions - Dry 51F
Venue - Edgeley Park, Stockport
Attendance - 9394

No news during the week. Now we're just on to our next league game. I just noticed that Joseph Enakarhire bruised his jaw during training so he'll miss this weekend's match.

Coca-Cola Championship League Match
Preview
Back to league play and back in the tube for the first time this season. We've had mixed results against Burnley in past seasons going 2-0-2. We're missing three starters for this one but we hope to rebound after we got bounced from the Carling Cup by Stockport.
Starting Line-up: (4-3-2-1)
Strikers -Johnson
Midfield -Lennon / Montgomery / Southern / Davis / Routledge
Defense -Crainey / McGregor / Thomas / Boyce
Keeper -Green
Final Score:Burnley0-2Blackpool
1st Half Notes
It was a pretty even first half. Both teams put four shots on the board but no one scored. We had two players get injured in a collision about halfway through. Keith Southern and Stephen Crainey were the victims as they couldn't continue.
2nd Half Notes
It took us just one half to get back into the groove. Nick Montgomery got the benefit of a deflection off a Burnley defender to go ahead 1-0. Then Wayne Routledge scored his first goal of the season just nine minutes later as he headed in a cross sent in by Aaron Lennon.
Goals - Nick Montgomery 52, Wayne Routledge 61
Man of the Match - Emmerson Boyce
Conditions - Dry 46F
Venue - Turf Moor, Burnley
Attendance - 22579

+ Physio Report +

- Keith Southern and Aaron Lennon suffered injuries during the match that will keep them out about five days.

Well I've decided to take some time off from documenting my dynasty. My current game is still going but I am just going to play it minus the postings. I found myself not playing as much cause I was not getting burned out...not from the game necessarily but the time I was taking to document everything. I may pick this up in the future...but for now I'm going on a little hiatus.

Thanks to all of you that have been faithful readers or just stopped by.

umm..excuse me Mr Vick..any chance you will be updating this any time soon??

I really miss this Dynasty, best one I have ever followed.

I am currently playing with the Seasiders as well and often find my self saying "what would Mike Vick be doing in this situation".
