Former NFL kicker sent to Sparks mental facility

LAS VEGAS — A former Oakland Raiders kicker charged with shooting at the home of performers Siegfried & Roy will be sent to a mental health facility in Northern Nevada for treatment, a judge decided Thursday.

Cole Ford, 32, was ordered to the Lakes Crossing Center in Sparks after doctors determined he was not competent to stand trial on several charges, including felony assault with a deadly weapon.

The long-haired and bearded Ford told Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass he disagreed with her decision. He also asked that doctors outside Nevada evaluate him because he didn’t “fit into the gambling” culture.

“I want all my words documented on paper so you can show me why I’m not competent,” he said, later adding, “I’m perfectly competent.”

Ford repeatedly interrupted the judge, telling her he would refuse to take medication.

He said he wanted to plead guilty to the charges, but the judge said he couldn’t until he was able to stand trial.

Ford could face up to 27 years in prison if convicted of all charges. He has been in custody at Clark County jail since his Nov. 2 arrest.

No one was hurt in the Sept. 21 drive-by shooting, but police said shotgun pellets shattered windows and left a hole in an outside wall at the Las Vegas home of illusionists Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn.

After being drafted out of USC in 1995 by the Pittsburgh Steelers and released, Ford kicked for three seasons with the Raiders. The Raiders cut Ford before the 1998.

Ex-NFL kicker Cole Ford pleaded guilty Thursday to opening fire on the Las Vegas home of the illusionist duo in 2004. The plea was part of deal aimed at keeping the former footballer from spending up to six years in prison. Ford, hospitalized for mental illness after the shooting and currently in jail, agreed to cop to the incident to be eligible for a suspended sentence. Per the deal, he will likely continue his treatment at a mental health facility in lieu of prison.

Ford pleaded guilty to one felony charge of shooting at the compound shared by of Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn in September 2004. Several additional felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, were in turn dismissed.
"We've come a long way with Mr. Ford and he's doing terrific," Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass said at the hearing, per the Associated Press.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a psychiatric examination conducted after Ford's arrest indicated he believed Siegfried and Roy would trigger an apocalypse.

"While watching Siegfried and Roy, he had a sudden realization that what was wrong with the world was linked to the illusionists' treatment, dominance and unhealthy intimacy he saw them having with their animals," psychiatrist Norton Roitman wrote in the report. "He saw their illusions as their power to distort and change reality. He felt they threatened [the] world, and he began trying to figure out how he could stop them."
Ford, armed with a shotgun, drove to the entertainers' home, screamed, "We need to get...Siegfried and Roy out of this country," and began unloading into the house, shattering several windows and leaving a large hole in one of the walls. No one was hurt in the incident.

Glass deemed Ford incompetent to stand trial and subsequently rejected Ford's numerous attempts to plead guilty to the litany of charges that could have put him away for 27 years.

Instead, the judge sent the 34-year-old former kicker to a state mental health facility in Sparks, Nevada, until he was pronounced fit enough to understand the charges against him.

"Yes, your honor," Ford said, responding to whether he accepted the plea agreement. Ford's deal requires him to refrain from any contact with Fischbacher or Horn and to pay restitution for damages.

Neither of the performers was present at the hearing nor has commented on Ford's plea.

Ford's sentencing has been set for June 29.
