OPENING SEASON COMMENTS
We enter spring drills and learn that three players have been placed on academic probation for the 2005 season: QB Tommy Willis, G Gilbert Bradley & CB Geoff Novack. All three players absence shouldn't be that big of a deal as none were projected to be starters. Also, after being suspended by the team for much of the 2004 season TE Ethan Bush has decided to leave the team.

2005 Pittsburg State Roster Overview
(Starters blue bold-faced and underlined, red-shirts appear red and italicized.)

QUARTERBACKS (SCOUT: Pretty Good)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
House, Brett7QBFr938
Burnett, George16QB*So88
Godfrey, Lance15QB*Sr*1919
Wills, Tommy9QB*Jr*88

Godfrey will get the starting nod this season. He appeared in four games last season, completing 10 of 17 passes for 124 yards and 1 TD. Freshman Brett House will serve as the backup in his first season. He has the best potential of all the quarterbacks on the roster, which isn't great. We will be looking to upgrade the QB position for next season. Burnett will serve as the third string QB with Willis sitting out the season due to academic probation.

BACKS (SCOUT: Lousy)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Battle, Robbie20RBFr1437
Felts, Austin31RBFr2831
Mallory, Robbie35RBSr*3131
Williford, Donnie34RBJr*2130
Gray, Larry41FBJr*1342
Maxie, Roman23FBJr*2224
May, Brad46FBSo*1919
Zelenka, Tom22FBSr2636

Mallory performed great last season after RB Mitchell Green went down with an injury. Mallory rushed 99 times in eleven games for 443 yards and 2 TDs. He also came up big out of the backfield, catching 28 passes for 287 yards and 4 TDs. Zelenka returns for his senior season after picking up 1st Team All-MIAA honors last season. Not a great blocking FB but did score a combined 7 TDs for us last season.

RECEIVERS
(SCOUT: Terrible)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Hastings, Levon88TEFr1736
Lane, Phillip87TEFr1545
Terrell, Zach81TEFr1955
Binkley, Emmitt5WRSr1830
Conway, Vinny80WRSr*1414
Grim, Aaron82WRSr*4152
Heimulu, Troy4WRSr3540
Rattay, Darren83WRSo*1014
Schwartz, Derrick86WRSr*2240
Vang, Bart6WRSr2121
Kim, Brett85WR*So*1342

Heimulu had a good season in 2004, despite the fact that we are not a throwing team. This season he will move to split end position with the emergence of Grim as the new #1 receiving option. Grim is a fifth year senior that was red-shirted last season and has two years of eligibility left. The tight end position was a key position for us last year with since departed TE Ricky Hopkins. We recruited three TEs and all look to have great future potential. Terrell will be the starter and has probably the best current ability out of the three. Hastings and Lane look to have similar futures but I would put my money on Hastings.

OFFENSIVE LINE (SCOUT: Fair)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Cordell, Rex52CJr*1568
Hanson, Nick51C*Fr88
Boyd, Quinn64GSo715
Marx, Thurman66GSr4949
Rose, Russell62GJr1337
Sinclair, Mel72GFr840
Bradley, Gilbert67G*Sr*812
Applewhite, Van65TFr38
Cummins, Dwayne74TSr3434
Gardner, Fred78TFr015
Lindsay, Bennie75TSo255

We return only two starters from last year's offensive line: Thurman Marx and Dwayne Cummins. Marx earned 1st Team All-MIAA honors last season after a 38 of 82 key run block season in which he allowed only two sacks. Cummings had similar numbers with 40 of 94 key run blocks and three sacks allowed. He also earned 1st Team All-MIAA honors. The three new starters on the line were all quality backups last season and we see no reason why they shouldn't put up numbers similar to Cummins and Marx. If Russell Rose happens to struggle at the guard position look for freshman Gilbert Bradley to replace him. Bradley has a great future ahead of him and should be a future All-MIAA selection.

KICKING GAME (SCOUT: Terrible)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Bownes, Jimmie14PSo3050
Passmore, Randal8PSo*1717
Settle, Cole11KSr2744
Shreiber, Alan19KSr3248
Stowe, Kurt13KFr127
Weber, T.J.10KFr1490

Our kicking game should be the strongest aspect of this years team. Bownes returns after a freshman season that was anything but great. Bownes averaged just 31.2 yards/punt and put only 10 inside the 20. But we feel with his off season conditioning and the addition of a full year of experience under his belt, that he is ready to live up to his potential. Shreiber inherits the kicking job from departed Dennis Hicks. I don't know that Shreiber will be as good as Hicks but should be okay. If he struggles freshman T.J. Weber could claim the job. Weber was a kid that we didn't think we could land but we did and his potential is off the charts. Cole Settle will handle the kickoff duties, as Shreiber just doesn't have enough leg.

DEFENSIVE LINE (SCOUT: Fair)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Barrett, Hugh90DESr1124
Becker, Britt99DEFr833
Forest, Jake95DESr*3035
Herttna, Dana76DESr2041
Elliott, Adrian94DE*Sr*1010
Flowers, Britt73DTSr*1332
Fugate, Derek98DTJr1616
Lash, Tyrus71DTJr*77
Whiting, Skip79DTSr3131

The team returns all four starters on the defensive line for the 2005 season. The group didn't get alot of sacks last season but did a very good job of showing that they can hurry the quarterback. Backup Derek Fugate will see quite a bit of action as he recorded six sacks in eleven games last season. Hugh Barrett will also play a key backup role after recording 4.5 sacks last year.

LINEBACKERS (SCOUT: Poor)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Blades, Cory58ILBSo1353
Cooley, Malcolm91ILBSr*2560
Gindin, Wes45ILBJr3650
Pearsall, Marvin54ILBFr1321
Rodriguez, Lionel93ILBSo1745
Campbell, Roosevelt44OLBFr2573
Grant, Lamar96OLBJr1819
Houzah, Kevin97OLBSo946
Kluge, Teddy47OLBFr1228
McClary, Terrance59OLBSr3544

Our linebacking core has a chance to become one of the best units in the nation. We return two All-MIAA LBs in Malcolm Cooley and Terrance McClary. Cooley was a tackling machine last season when he wasn't hurt, recording 54 tackles and 2 sacks in eight games. Gindin will start after a great 2004 season as a backup. With two years of eligibility left, he should develop into a great player for us. Along with Cooley, McClary is our only other returning starter. McClary is in his final season and is a bit of an enigma. He started all eleven games last season but recorded only 24 tackles and no sacks but earned all league honors. He could stand to show some improvement in his senior season. Freshman Roosevelt Campbell will start in his first season. The kid has great potential at every aspect of the game but his endurance could become a factor in the about of time he can spend on the field. But look for him to become a very special player. Cory Blades will be the star backup and should start next season with the graduation of McClary. Blades played in all eleven games last season but recorded only one tackle. He has good future potential.

SECONDARY (SCOUT: Decent)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Fanning, Riddick39CBSr4646
Hawkins, Norbert25CBSr2828
Kearns, Greg43CBSr3347
Novack, Geoff49CBJr*1739
Olds, Cornelius27CBJr*710
Autry, Max36SFr1737
Jay, Albert32SJr3232
Starks, Darryl30SSr2029
Osteen, Rick48S*Jr*641

Our secondary was a gigantic part of the reason we were able to go 8-3 last season. After recording twenty interceptions last season on defense and fifteen of those by the secondary to go along with three returning starters, gives us reason to believe that we should be pretty successful again this season. Fanning is the consistant one out of the group. Nothing really special just goes out and plays his man and does his job. Kearns is the playmaker of the group. He recorded 31 tackles and 3 INTs last season. He is our main kickoff returner and last season had a 32.6 average and 2 TDs. Jay is the hitter of the group. Didn't record one interception last season but recorded 50 tackles and 19 assists. The kid could approach 80 this season. Starks is the wildcard of the group. He wasn't a starter last season and wasn't that good of a backup last year. If he struggles early look for junior Rick Osteen to get playing time and maybe even freshman Max Autry.

OVERALL ROSTER THOUGHTS
We lost a lot of good seniors that really helped us last season but we recruited some guys that could contribute now. This team is good enough to compete again for the conference championship. I don't know that the offense will put up as many points as last season but I think the defense might be a better group than the great group we had last season. Look for the matchup against Central Missouri to determine the champion once again.

Player of the Game: PSU LB Wes Gindin - 7 tackles, 5 assists, 1 INT for 49 yds, 1 TD

Result
The Bears dominate us in the first half thanks to us turning the ball over either by an interception that setup a TD or by losing two fumbles that setup more scoring chances. We trailed at the half 24-3 and pretty much felt we were out of it. But QB Lance Godfrey comes out and leads us on two consecutive TD drives to start the 2nd half and the defense steps up and puts the clamps on the Baylor offense, holding them scoreless in the 2nd half. K Alan Shreiber was able to pull us within four at 24-20 with a 36-yd FG to start the 4th quarter. With time running out, we were forced to punt the ball away with 5:59 left in the game. The Bears started a drive and were able to move the ball at will against our defense but LB Wes Gindin stepped in front of a QB Karl Serra pass and picked it off and returned it 49-yds to put us up 27-24 and seal the victory.

Recruiting
We have sixteen seniors that will be leaving the team after this season, so that works out well as we will have sixteen recruits. Our main focus will be at WR, DE and CB, as we have three graduating seniors at WR and CB and two at DE. I set a standard of at least a 70 fit score and a 1300 test score. I really want to increase my academic reputation but also want to field a competitive team. Here is a look at the Week 1 offers:

Player of the Game: PSU G Thurman Marx - 6/15 key run blocks, 0 sacks allowed

Result
For this weeks game against UAB with impliminted the 3-4 defense because we felt we could defend their offense a little bit better and did it pay off. We held UAB's offense to just 288 yards and only ten points. We got two FGs from K Alan Shreiber (18, 25) and RB Robbie Mallory scored on a 16-yd TD run. QB Lance Godfrey threw for 194 yards, including a 3-yd TD pass to WR Aaron Grim, who went over the 100-yd receiving mark for the 2nd straight game.

Player of the Game: PSU T Dwayne Cummins - 7/11 key run blocks, 0 sacks allowed

Result
New Mexico jumped on us early, scoring the first ten points of the game. The got a 4-yd TD run from RB Luther Mills on their opening possession after running 3 plays for 58-yds. They would add a 35-yd FG from K Billy Bean to lead 10-0 after the 1st quarter. We cut the lead to 10-7 early in the 2nd on a FB Roman Maxie 2-yd TD run. The Lobos would add another 34-yd FG from Bean to go up 13-7 but we got a K Alan Shreiber 36-yd FG in the closing minutes of the 1st half. The defense would put the clamps on the Lobos offense in the 2nd half, as they would not score the rest of the game. CB Greg Kearns intercepted a pass midway through the 3rd quarter that he returned 44-yds for a TD to put us up for good at 17-13. RB Robbie Mallory would add an 11-yd TD run in the 4th quarter for insurance and we improved to 3-0 on the season. We have an open date next week before heading to Topeka, Kansas, to play Washburn. The bad news after the game was that starting G Thurman Marx has a high ankle sprain and will miss 25 weeks, which means his college playing days are done. Also, WR Emmitt Binkley left the game with a compound leg fracture and will miss 30 weeks.

Recruiting
Not a lot to report, as we just continue to make visits and phone calls. WR Bruce Drain seems to be leaning towards North Texas. DE Frank McConnell will be visiting this week. He is a shoe in to committ to us and has a high GPA and test score but doesn't figure to be more than a backup during his playing career.

Player of the Game: PSU RB Robbie Mallory - 11 carries, 110 yds, 3 TDs; 5 rec., 31 yds

Result
Again we fall behind early, only to explode after trailing big. Down 17-0 to start the 2nd quarter, the offense starting clicking and never stopped as we scored 21 unanswered points to lead at halftime 21-17. Things only got worse for the Ichabods in the 2nd half as we scored another 27 and win this one easily. The running game really exploded, probably the best running day since I took over the program as we racked up 252-yds on the ground. RB Robbie Mallory rushed for 110-yds and 3 TDs & RB Austin Felts rushed for 129-yds and 1 TD. QB Lance Godfrey threw for 287-yds and 2 TDs, including a 45-yd TD pass to WR Aaron Grim. Grim went over the 100-yd receiving mark for the third time in four games. CB Riddick Fanning picked off his 2nd pass of the season to lead the team.

Recruiting
We only get one response this week, as S Steven Griffith decides not to come to Pitt State and opts to go to Oklahoma State. This was a big loss as we really wanted Griffith to be a Gorilla but now we must turn our attention towards S Alonzo Shannon. Shannon isn't quite the player Griffith is but still a solid safety. Along with our offer, he is entertaining offers from Arkansas State, Buffalo, Kent State and Mississippi State. He has offers from everyone except Kent State. More offers should start rolling in next week.

Player of the Game: NILL RB Cornelius Gordon - 11 carries, 74 yds, 1 TD; 7 rec., 75 yds, 1 TD

Result
For the second straight season we got dominated by the Huskies. QB Lance Godfrey threw two interceptions that setup a FG and the other was returned 31-yds for a TD. QB Curtis Szabo alos threw 3 TD passes. RB Robbie Mallory rushed for 105 yds and a TD in the game, giving him at least 100-yds rushing in every game except our first one. After the game we learned we lost two more key players to injury. T Dwayne Cummins, our 2nd best offensive linemen, is out for the next nine games with a torn thumb ligament and DE Jake Forest will be out eight weeks with a pulled quadriceps muscle.

Player of the Game: PSU QB Lance Godfrey - 22/26, 234 yds, 3 TDs

Result
Just what we needed to get back on track, our rivalry game. The guys were pumped up for this one and it showed. QB Lance Godfrey was nearly perfect the entire game throwing for 234-yds and 3 TDs. RB Austin Felts was the receipiant of two of those TD passes and Austin added another two on the ground, along with 94-yds rushing. The defense was awesome as we changed to a 4-6 defense, knowing that the Lions never throw the ball. It paid off as we held them to just 110-yds rushing, which meant they had to start throwing the ball and QB Julio Francis threw 4 INTs. T Dwayne Cummins decided he wasn't going to miss any games unless he was on his death bed and the offensive line responded. Cummings was 5/8 in key run blocks and C Rex Cordell was 5/11. The good news after the game was that Central Missouri State lost to Missouri Western 31-28, which means the MIAA Championship pretty much hinges on our next game, which is against Central Missouri State.

Recruiting
We get only one response for Week 7 and that was from WR Jamie Arellano, who decided not to come to Pitt and instead will attend Duke. We really like Arellano to be our #1 WR next season. He had caught 51 passes for 1208 yards and 8 TDs for Theodore Roosevelt High School in Bronx, New York, this season. Now we have turned our attention to WR Cory McKeown. McKeown has as many catches as Arellano did but a few less yards and 4 less TDs. A lot of players visiting this week, so hopefully a bunch of responses will pour in next week.

Player of the Game: CMSU WR Keith Koonce - 5 rec., 80 yds; 1 carry, 40 yds

Result
Not a lot to report here as we got our butts handed to us in this one. QB Lance Godfrey picked the biggest game of the season to have his worst as a starter, completing just 38% of his passes. The defense did a good job of holding them scoreless in the 1st half but couldn't stop them in the 2nd. Central's win gives them the tie breaker over us and Missouri Western is in 1st place at 3-0 in the conference. Central is 3-1 and we are tied with them at 2-1. We need to beat Western in our game and hope that someone in the conference can beat Central before the end of the season in order to win the MIAA. We really thought that we would win this game this season but we just weren't prepared.

Recruiting
During our open date in Week 8 we managed to get committments from K Rickey Beyer and S Alonzo Shannon. Beyer is projected to be a starter somewhere down the road but probably not until his junior or senior season. S Alonzo Shannon is great at defending the run and loves to tackle. In Week 9 we added three more players and lost one. FB Sammy McClennen, DE Dustin Mello and CB Jeff Hicks all committ to becoming Gorillas. McClennen is a good runner but will primarly be used as a receiver out of the backfield. He has caught 37 passes for 598 yards and 7 TDs this season. DE Dustin Mello is going to be a great run stopper but lacks the ability to get a good pass rush. CB Jeff Hicks is going to be a special player. His 13 interceptions this season really stick out!

Player of the Game: PSU RB Robbie Mallory - 23 carries, 116 yds, 1 TD; 2 rec., 10 yds

Result
Emporia State gave us all we could handle and more. It's never easy to win on the road in the MIAA and this game proved it, as we greatly overlooked the matchup against the Hornets. This one would take overtime to decide a winner and after K Alan Shreiber hit a 22-yd FG to take the lead in overtime, the Hornets got their chance but K Rod Nori would miss a 24-yd FG wide right to seal the victory for us. We held Emporia to just 286 total yards but our offense never got going. RB Robbie Mallory and RB Austin Felts continue to be a double-headed monster as both provided TD runs and Mallory rushed for 116-yds on the day. QB Lance Godfrey struggled again against a bad team. Might be something to watch for next season with the signing of QB Randal Lake. Missouri Western lost their game against Missouri Southern and Central has a tough task against (3-4 overall, 3-1 conference) Washburn.

Offensive Leaders

Recruiting
Three more players sign letters of intent to come play at Pitt. QB Randal Lake will challenge starting QB Lance Godfrey next spring and might just win the job. Not great high school numbers but should be a solid college QB. DE Frank McConnell will be no more that a role player at best but will greatly help the GPA numbers. DT Mark Hampton figures to be a future starter, maybe as early as next season. Just like DE Dustin Mello, Hampton isn't great at getting to the QB but specializes in defending the run. The defensive side of the football's future is looking solid, now we just need the pieces to start falling into place on offense.

Player of the Game: PSU RB Robbie Mallory - 25 carries, 214 yds, 4 TDs; 2 rec., 18 yds

Result
Another sad, pathetic team gives us a good game but still we overcome it for a win. Truman State recovered a fumble after QB Lance Godfrey got sacked and returned it 66-yds right before halftime to tie the game at 17-17 at half. But we came out and just played smash mouth football in the 2nd half as RB Robbie Mallory rushed for 214-yds and 4 TDs. RB Austin Felts added 162-yds and 1 TD. With two games remaining it is possible that we will have two 1,000 rushers on our team this season. Mallory's 4 TDs now give him twelve on the season.

Offensive Leaders

G Thurman Marx - High Ankle Sprain (Out - 17 Weeks)

Recruiting
We receive committments from two more players and now only six remain. WR Cory McKeown will be a quality backup down the road but will probably never be the #1 guy, especially if Drain or Stonge sign. CB Winston McElroy is a ball hawking corner that loves to pickoff quarterbacks. Six guys remain and I have a feeling that we will get all of them.

Player of the Game: PSU RB Robbie Mallory - 21 carries, 161 yds, 1 TD; 3 rec., 31 yds

Result
We use the same formula we've used all season, a steady dose of RB Robbie Mallory and RB Austin Felts. Mallory scored on a 34-yd TD run and K Alan Shreiber hit a 37-yd FG as we went to halftime up 10-7. QB Lance Godfrey took control of the game in the 3rd quarter using the running game to setup two TD passes, making the score 24-7. The Bearcats only managed a 51-yd FG in the 4th and we added a 4-yd TD run from Felts. Again we racked up big numbers on the ground rushing for 254-yds. Going into our last game of the season we need Northwest to pull off a major upset of Central in order to win the conference. If not, we need to win our game and hope that we can get an At-Large Bowl Bid.

Recruiting
One more recruit landed and one more got away, now bringing our total recruiting class to eleven. G Leon Matthews is a future All-MIAA selection but needs to improve on his run blocking. His pass blocking is superb. WR Bruce Drain snubbed us after we thought he was in the bag and is going to attend Idaho. We contact two other WRs and neither had received any offers or been contacted, so hopefully either WR Grady Watson or WR Johnny Wolf will agree to attend Pitt next season.

Player of the Game: PSU QB Lance Godfrey - 17/27, 171 yds, 3 TDs; 6 carries, 51 yds

Result
Missouri Western came into this game, hoping to prove that the brief time they were in 1st place wasn't no fluke. The line coming into the game had us winning by 20 but Western made sure we didn't cover that spread. We used three TD passes from QB Lance Godfrey in a span of 14:09 to take a 24-14 lead into the 4th quarter. QB Lincoln Fitzgerald found TE Marco Damm for a 22-yd TD with 3:23 left in the game, putting Western down by only three. After gaining only 29-yds on six plays, we were forced to punt and Western took over with no timeouts and :34 left. After two incomplete passes and an Intentional Grounding call, Fitzgerald completed a 42-yd pass to WR James Karl down to PSU45. But they couldn't get to the line in time to spike the ball to attempt a tying FG and we escaped with a narrow win. After the game we learned that Central had held on for a 22-13 victory over Northwest, which means no conference championship again. Our only hope for a bowl is that the selection committee gives us that At-Large bid.

Recruiting
Getting down to the last few weeks and after landing two more, we still need three more committments. This week we land T Damon Gunn and OLB Mitch Maxwell. Gunn and G Leon Matthews are going to be a force on the offensive line and with T Dwayne Cummins and G Thurman Marx leaving, both should be starters next season. Maxwell should be a quality backup and should provide depth given our 3-4 defensive scheme.

Player of the Game: PITT RB Rondell Baillargeon - 32 carries, 154 yds, 1 TD; 2 rec., 11 yds, 1 TD

Result
We were rewarded for our 9-2 record with our very first bowl game against Pittsburgh in the Las Vegas Bowl. On our very first possession of the game we drove 71-yds on seven plays and QB Lance Godfrey found WR Aaron Grim for a 35-yd TD to put us up 7-0. After forcing the Panthers to punt on their first three drives, their next four would prove to be our undoing. QB Burt Webb would throw for two TDs and RB Dominic Dacosta ran for two more as the Panthers took a commanding lead into halftime up 28-7. Again we took our first possession right down the field and Godfrey hooked up with TE Zach Terrell for a 27-yd TD to pull us within 14. RB Rondell Baillargeon then proceeded to put the game in his hands and Pittsburgh scored on two of their next three possessions thanks to a 6-yd TD run and a 6-yd TD pass from Baillargeon. RB Austin Felts added a 6-yd TD run early in the 4th and Godfrey threw a 52-yd TD pass to WR Derrick Schwartz in the final seconds but it was just too much to overcome as we lost our first bowl game. Our season ends with a lose and a 9-3 overall record.

On paper our recruiting class doesn't look that great, as it only got a rating of 110th. But I think the group of guys we landed a going to be a huge part of this team's success over the next four seasons.

Our season wasn't a total loss. Despite the fact that we didn't win the MIAA again, we still managed a bowl birth in just my 2nd season at the helm. Central Missouri beat North Texas again in the New Orleans Bowl, 38-28. With QB Clifton Bush graduating, maybe next season we will have our chance to win the MIAA finally. USC and Tennessee met in the FedEx Orange Bowl for the 2nd straight season with roles reversed this year, as USC was able to escape with a very close victory.
