Basic Hard drive info for an idiot (me)

I have a PC with a 146GB hard drive. I am converting all my family videos and doing the edit hack job on them, so I am using a lot of space.

I purchased a 500GB LaCie d2 Big Disk Triple Interface hard drive. I figure this will be used for all my video files. I thought it was a simple as plug and play but it is not. You have to make it a primary and then format and partition it as a NTSF.

This would be ok, but when I format it, it shows a 476GB total (probably the true size) and only 233GB free to use. Why?

So, I start over and make 4 partitions of roughly 120GB each. The first formats and all 120GB is free to use. The second formats and it has only 50GB to use. The others were still formatting when I left this morning.

Does any of this make sense? I summon all computer geeks of FOFC to save a lesser soul. I will be pissed if I bought a 500GB drive and am only able to us 250GB of it.

I think the discussion on that page relates to the fact that MS changed some aspect of Firewire support in SP2 and that means some firewire devices have need updated firmware/drivers. So, are you using XP SP2 and firewire?

PS. I noticed that these guys' US offices are a few miles away from me and just 1 1/2 miles from my parents' house.
