Should I cut Andrew Kerr?

You eNFLers will know what I'm talking about. So I had the 11th pick in the draft, the highest pick my team has ever had, and I take the best player at my highest need, Guard. Interesting note, a couple picks earlier, a division rival takes a lesser rated Guard, to the amazement of the rest of the league. The draft ends, and my guy busts something fierce. Lost over 20 points current and future. Now, he wants 11th pick money, and there's no way I'm going to pay that. However, I can release him. As far as I can figure, that doesn't really help me any, since he doesn't count on my roster now anyway -- all it means is that other teams can sign him.

So is there any reason for me to do it, other than not having to look at his unsigned butt every time I peruse my roster?

Depends. Is he a guy you still like, but just don't want to pay 11th pick money? If so, why not let him go back into the draft and try to pick him up somewhat lower next time around? By holding onto his rights, if you think he's a player who can be useful down the road, you prevent rivals from using him against you.

If, on the other hand, you feel he's utterly worthless, and you have no intention of ever letting him wear your uniform, then, sure, cut him. If nobody picks him up, then he'll eventually get weeded out by the game, and your revenge will be complete.

A 3rd option is to let him sit out the entire year and re-enter the draft.

edit: SackAttack pretty much summed up my thoughts. Must be the Ron Shields case study in IHOF.

cthomer: Maybe I wasn't clear, but that's one of the two options I've got. No way am I signing him. I'm either letting him sit out all year, or I'm cutting him. I'm just wondering if there's any point in bothering to cut him. I guess it'd be interesting to see if anyone signs him, and how he does, but all that would do is just get me mad if he booms.

I think if you cut him, someone will give him a chance to see if he rebounds.

This exposes a problem with FOF though. The game shouldn't show you the busts until after training camp. In real life, you don't draft a guy and immediately know he's a huge bust. You don't learn that until you get him signed and into training camp, which by then it's already too late and you've paid the money and screwed yourself. If the game were realistic we'd never even be having this discussion.

By the way, did anyone notice that last year's big first round bust, DT Dwayne Stevens, rentered the draft and was selected 6(21) by Tampa?

I agree, yab. That's a big problem with FOF. I really shouldn't know what a bust he's going to be this early. I really shouldn't know until after I sign him. This 'bust' was really nothing more than letting a guy go into FA -- I lose his talents, but I save cap room.

I think I'm going to cut him. With all the weird things that happened in the last stage, I'm afraid that the AI is going to decide to make him an offer.

Reason to keep:

He still is a decent player and might help another team if you cut him.

Reason to cut:

You need the cap money that will be tied up all year because the game has set that $ aside so that you have the cap to sign him. If you've got plenty of cap, there is absolutely no reason to cut him other than wanting to quit looking at the horrid reminder.

I'm not sure if an unsigned rookie will hold a grudge if you release him. If not, you might try releasing him sometime during the season (so that he might go unnoticed) and then possibly pick him up out of free agency (if you want him on your team that is).

The latest version of FOF lets you use all your cap -- even the part allocated for rookies. So that's not really an issue.

I really don't want the guy on my team. I mean, he's rated something like 9/36 now, and I've got no good reason to really want him more than anyone else.

I was thinking I *might* cut him just because I didn't want him sitting there on my roster. But now, since the AI made a whole mess of moves that I didn't choose, I'm worried they might sign him for me, so I'm going to release him before that happens.
