Man Drinks Beer, Pees Out Of Avalanche

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1261997.html?menu

Man peed way out of avalanche

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi car was buried in the Slovak Tatra mountains.

He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out.

But as he dug with his hands, he realised the snow would fill his car before he managed to break through.

He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.

He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

Parts of Europe have this week been hit by the heaviest snowfalls since 1941, with some places registering more than ten feet of snow in 24 hours.

How do you know the beer was cold, it was sitting in his car. I think the real way it worked is that he figured he was a deadman so decided to go out in style. Before he drank himself to death he had to take a leak and that's when inspiration hit.

i think its safe to say that the beer was cold if it was in his car in the midst of an avalanche.

The beer is still going to be warmer than freezing--i.e., it is in a liquid state.

Actually snow has great insulating properties.

Seriously, I might be remembering incorrectly, but doesn't digging worsen the situation when trapped underneath snow?

Not sure, but it has now been shown that drinking a beer or sixty can help.

Not sure why this hasn't been said yet, but....

Sixty bottles of beer on the wall, Sixty Bottles of beer....

The more I think about it, the more likely it seems that the story started out with 70 or 80 beers on the wall.

Because he is a man.

As far as the "Why didn't he just pour the beer on the snow?" question...

Three answers:

1. He was already drinking when he came up with the plan.

2. If it's likely you're going to die in an avalanche, would you rather drink the beer, or pour it out?

3. Urine is nearly 100 degrees (body temp) Beer in a car buried by an avalanche is probably much colder. Hot urine melts snow better than cold beer.

I fucking hate this commercial. Cold is not a taste. It's a sensation. So if you buy that piss that they call Coors, you're buying into their "coldest taste!" BS. But hey, like most American beers, I guess they figure their target audience doesn't know better.

Couldn't he have eaten some of the snow to achieve the same effect?

And I'm with you on the coldest tasting bit, NM.

Eat snow ---> less room in your belly for beer.

The real lesson is this. Mother nature is a mo-fo. All we can really do is prepare ourselves by keeping sixty or so beers in our cars at all times.
Be prepared, thats my motto.

Seconded.

And as drinkers of bad beer should know by now, serving bad beer really cold is an efficient way to mask its complete lack of desirable flavor. Once the stuff reaches room temperature it becomes almost nauseating to choke down.

Too bad this isn't on the dynasty board or I'd have given this thread 5 stars!

Wait a minute... he drank 60 beers?! Over what period of time??

Wouldn't it be ironic if the pee melted the snow and the guy was found by rescuers, only he was dead from acute alcohol poisoning after drinking 60 beers?
