OPENING SEASON COMMENTS
I lose three players:
S Dean Bills leaves because of academic problems from last year.
TE Kent Cornejo injured another student in an off-campus fight and got suspended.
DE Dennis Terrell was suspended for assaulting a female student in her room. Nice guy.
ACADEMICS: 49 reputation, 55th overall ranking. We improve 4 points in reputation, 20 spots in ranking. Very nice.
PRESTIGE: 88. We climb one point here.
STAFF
I don't lose any staff members this year, but I do make changes in some key areas: Deep South and Southeast scouts, and Offensive Coordinator. We still have the best overall staff in the nation.

I accidentally hit "away" when I scheduled with Troy State. No biggie. We have as much of a cupcake regular season schedule as is possible in the SEC, with no UT or Florida this year. UGA is no longer an elite team.

QUARTERBACKS (SCOUT: Terrific)

Harrison, Glen15QBJR(RS)4073
O'Neal, Isaac5QBFR2063
Cosby, Kenyon19QBSO(RS)1648
Jordan, Rob3QB(WO)82848

Our new scout likes Durham even better than our last one. O'Neal has some impressive-looking green bars, and if he shows signs of developing accordingly, he'll challenge Cosby for the starting spot in 2010 when Durham is gone.

May, Jim24FBFR3498

Thaphituck and Burks look serviceable, but not all that impressive. Collins, though, is a guy for whom I have high hopes. Unless I sign a big-time stud this year or next, Collins will be a likely four-year starter beginning next year. At FB, Stephens and Clay look virtually the same, and will therefore pretty much split time, and get their share of carries. Jim May looks like a big-time stud.

For the third year in a row, we'll do the Armsrtong-vs-weak-teams, Feryhough-vs-strong-teams thing at TE. Woods, Dunlap, and Bagwell should give us a very nice set of receivers this year and next Buggelli looks like he'll be a solid receiver when he comes into his own, too.

Wagner, Kippen and Sutter are the returning starters, and Sutter and Kippen combined to give up 22 sacks last year. This group is very, very suspect. There is hope for a season or two down the road in Hauserman, Garner, Curtis, Stokes, and Birk, but for now I expect that we'll need to throw a lot of short passes against he better teams.

Our scout may not be all that good, but I don't need him to know that O.J. Flannery (92 tackles and 38 sacks over last 2 seasons) and Dana Gillespie (71 and 16) can get the job done, and that Welch and Williford will be just fine. We weren't the #1 run defense in terms of ypc for nothin' last year, and these four were the starters on the DL from midseason on after Williford took over due to an injury. I'll take 'em.

I'm feeling quite good about my LB situation. Dakota had 12.5 sacks and helped anchor that solid run defense last year, Mosley is a returning starter, and Heck, who got a decent amount of playing time last year, looks like he'll be a good player as well. In addition, the three freshmen redshirting all look like they could be good enough to start in a couple of years.

All four starters return from last year, and May, Caldwell, Evereett and Boesiger provide some solid hope for the future.
OVERALL ROSTER THOUGHTS
The bottom line is this: we return 10 starters from what was one of the best defensive squads in the nation last year. We should at least make a run at the SEC title on defense alone. The offense will be fine against the lower-tier teams, but will have to rely heavily on short passes in the big games, due to our expected-to-be-weak offensive line.

WEEK ONE
RECRUITING
The plan this season is to offer schollies at the following positions: QB, RB, TE, WR, C, G, T, DE, DT, ILB, OLB, CB, S. I plan to induce walk-ons at FB, K, and CB. A QB from Columbia High in Decatur, GA catches my eye. He's not highly-rated (62+), but I like his Attitude, and incredibly strong academics. I therefore offer QB Carlos Barker this week. I also make an offer to an offensive tackle from Nevada who values Academics. T Gary Osborne wants to major in Statistics, and we're rated 70 in that area. The #4 CB in the nation, and #16 player overall, CB Brian O'Neill from Pittsburgh, PA, has a 97 fit score, so he gets an early offer. Also, the #4 WR in the land, WR Tommie Shaw, has a fit score of 90 and gets an offer this week. Finally, the #1 TE in the country, TE Kim Briggs from Huntsville, TX, is interested in Statistics and gets an offer. We're going after quite a few big-timers in the early-going. We'll see how this pans out.
OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK
#25 UVA 14, Mississippi St. 10
Vandy 27, Duke 14
OUR GAME: #11 Alabama (-6) at Troy St. [TV1]
Interesting gamer. We basically shut down Troy State all game long, with the exception of four LONG plays: TD passes of 92 and 80 yards, a 99-yard kickoff return, and a 80-yard run from scrimmage. Troy was 8 for 24 for 231 yards passing, with 4 INT's, and had 24 carries for 163 yards, but 80 of those yards came on one run. We won this one 34-31, and I'm chalking the big plays up, for now, to just a fluke that I'm not going to worry about just yet. Some numbers:
  • Kendall Durham short-passed 'em to death: 30 for 49 for 400 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT, but he was sacked EIGHT times by the mediocre-at-best Troy defense.
  • Preston Dunlap led the way with 9 catches for 145 yards.
  • Troy was 0 for 10 on 3rd-down conversions, and only held the ball for 20:28 all day long.
  • Lester Wagner, who I considered the strong point of my o-line coming in to the season, gave up 3 sacks, and was 0 for 6 in KRB.

I'm starting to get more concerned about how we're going to compete in difficult or even moderately-difficult games this year. We only beat a weak SC8 school 31-0 this week. However, WR Preston Dunlap is a bright spot once again, catching 9 passes for 153 yards and 3 TD's on the day. Durham is 28 for 37 for 327 yards with 3 TD's and 2 INT's. The running game looked pretty solid, too: 41 carries for 167 yards. Durham actually led the way with 7 for 62.

The silver lining of Shaw's decision to reject us is that he signed with ND, who had been my primary concern in the pursuit of WR Stephen Richardson. Hopefully Richardson will be more likely to look elsewhere because of Shaw's signing.

  • We hold 'em to a pathetic 100 yards total offense, and 7 first downs.
  • Durham was 15 for 27 for 173 yards with 2 TD's and 1 Int.

OUR GAME: Ol' Miss (4-4) at #10 Alabama (6-1) (-10) [TV4]
This one was MUCH closer than it should have been. The defense played great, but the offense sputtered. Ol' Miss only drove the ball into our territory twice all day, but they ran back an INT for a TD to give 'em a 7-7 tie at the end of regulation. We scored a TD, and stopped them for a 14-7 win. The "D" held 'em to 142 total yards, but we only gained 200. IF we beat Auburn to get to the SECCG, I have a feeling that Florida is going to just CRUSH us.

OUR GAME: #9 Alabama (-11) at Arkansas (2-7) [no TV]
Our boys turn in a very solid performance at Arkansas, especially considering what injuries have done to our wide receiver situation. I'm now having to start RB Trent Lewis opposite redshirt freshman Preston Dunlap. At any rate, Durham is 20 for 31 for 205 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's on the day, spreading the ball around quite well: 7 different players caught 2 passes or more. Burks and Thituck combined for 22 carries and 119 yards on the day, and the defense held 'em to 7 first downs and 123 total yards. We roll 31-3

Well, well, well. A *VERY* nice week for signings, nearly finishing our scholarships. I am especially thrilled to be able to swoop in so late and grab a QB like Glenn Coleman. Neither the WR (61-) nor the S (50+) that I'm pursuing has gotten any other visit request, so they still look like walk-on candidates. I'll put these guys on the big board next week.

Not landing Montreuil is a disappointment, to be sure, but I'm feeling pretty good about this class overall.
OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK

Tech 41, UGA 14
Ol' Miss 41, Mississippi ST. 28
OUR GAME: #40 Auburn (7-3) (-4) at #7 Alabama (9-1) [TV1]
Our defense was dominant in this one; Auburn didn't score an offensive TD until 1:39 to play in the game, and only had 8 first downs all day, and only crossed midfield on their final drive for a meaningless TD. The offense is able to do enough, and we beat the War Chickens 23-13 as Bob Lewandowski watches from the Auburn sideline; he didn't get to play a single snap all year. GOOD!!!!!! Dana Gillespie is player of the game with FIVE (count 'em) sacks, a Crimson Tide single-game record.

OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK
None.
OUR GAME: #2 Florida (11-0) (-11) vs. #7 Alabama (10-1) [TV2]
The defense once again carries us as the vaunted Gator offense is unable to muster a single score; Florida's lone points came on an interception return. Durham's short passes and Burks's 15 carries for 74 yards were enough to win. Dunlap again comes up huge in a big game: 11 catches for 160 yards and a TD. Durham is 25 for 37 for 286 yards with 2 Td's and 1 INT. We are once again SEC Champs. Quite frankly, this one is the most gratifying yet, as it was done mostly with my own players (only one class of original players left), and it was done with talent definitely worse than Florida's. We were able to gameplan to attack their defensive weaknesses, and to stop their offensive strengths. Nice!
POST-GAME INJURY REPORT
(*--new injury this week)
No new major injuries, and some good time for the minor ones to heal before the Orange Bowl against 11-0 Arizona State. Nice!

Arizona State featured too much of a balanced attack to gameplan effectively against, and they blew us out. QB Mercury Halstead threw for SIX TD's, and WR Sammie Mersky caught 8 for 200 yards for 2 TD's. Our offense was also unable to do much against their strong D. Oh well, we went farther than probably should have this year anyway. However, a cloud of darkness envelopes the land as Ultimate Evil rules the world of college football.

2nd Team: DE Randall Schneider (UGA), OLB Glenn Laird (UT), CB Herman Ellison (Auburn), S Morris Morris (Vandy)

And no, Morris Morris is NOT a typo.

P Newman is named to the All-Senior Team, along with the following SEC players: T Reuben Thomason (Fla), DE Rex Earnest, Fla), DE Randall Schneider (UGA),

PROFESSOR LAERTES' RATINGS
Team Performance: 77
Academic Performance: 62
Recruiting Performance: 22
Television Revenue: 98
Alumni Donations: 77
Attendance/Stadium: 90
FINAL GRADE: 73

We'll nine starters on offense, and seven on defense, and have some pretty solid guys coming off of their red-shirt seasons. I expect to challenge for the SEC Championship once again. Next year's team will be the first that is *fully* mine--no original players will remain. :-)

Two questions:

1) Did you post the right bowl recap? In the one you posted, you won vs Florida State.

2) How do you induce walkons? Just continue to call after you fill all of your scholarships? Can you have an offer to a player, have all of your scholarships fill, then continue to recruit a player and he'll walkon, or does it have to be a player you haven't offered to? Do you get a message about walkons?

1. Nice catch. Maybe that was the recap from the year before. I'll have to figure out what went wrong there.

2. You have to have schollies remaining. To induce a walk-on, just find a guy who has no visit requests from anyone else, and give him one in Week 15 or later. He'll walk on, and you do get a message regarding him.

No, it isn't. They didn't play anyone in the Top 10 all year. Their best win before the Bowl Game was 45-44 over #22 Washington. Just like in real life, you have to get into the BCS's National Championship game to win it all. Evil Incarnate's only defeat was at the hands of #4 Michigan on the road, and they destroyed 3 other top 25 teams by scores of 45-0, 71-10, and 59-9. Even though they are Ultimate Evil, the Irish deserved to be there rather than Arizona State. Oklahoma's bid was unchallenged: wins over #8 Texas (44-17), #3 Nebraska (27-20) and three other wins over ranked teams en route to a 12-0 record heading into the Bowl Game.

Arizona State had two other "suspect" wins:

56-49 over unranked UNLV
36-31 at home over unranked Stanford

They just didn't play like a team that deserved to be in the big game.

Dola:

And when I say "unranked", I'm talking not even in the Top 50.
