The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on Saturday named Eric Mangini defensive coordinator.

Mangini will replace Romeo Crennel, who was named coach of the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. New England still is in search of a replacement for former offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who will coach at Notre Dame.

The 34-year-old Mangini has been the defensive backs coach for New England since Belichick became coach in 2000 and received raves for the job he did last season. Despite missing both of its starting cornerbacks - Pro Bowler Ty Law and Tyrone Poole - for a large portion of the 2004 campaign, the Patriots' pass defense led the NFL in interceptions (29), fewest touchdown receptions allowed (11), opponents' passer rating (56.2) and pass deflections (121).

Mangini was rumored to be offered the defensive coordinator positions under Crennel in Cleveland and Nick Saban in Miami. But he elected to remain in New England, where he has helped win three championships in the last four seasons. "Nick Saban is an outstanding coach and Romeo Crennel is one of the finest coaches and people I have ever met in my life," Mangini said. "I am thrilled to be with the Patriots. This team and our players are a special group and mean a great deal to me. I look forward to putting this process behind and focusing on our offseason and the new challenges ahead." Mangini has spent virtually his entire NFL coaching career with Belichick. He was an assistant on Belichick's staff in Cleveland in 1995 and, after one season in Baltimore, he was reunited with Belichick in New York as a defensive assistant with the Jets from 1997-99.

I'm happy they kept him as I think this will assure continuity. Even more impressed that he is my age...

btw, just to answer the one question I had:

"Miami coach Nick Saban reportedly offered Mangini a contract worth about $800,000 per year and the Browns' proposal was in the area of $700,000 annually. Mangini's deal with the Patriots is likely to be in the $500,000-$600,000 range, but there is also a loyalty factor involved."

Pretty impressed that the guy makes DC at the age of 34...is that unusual or are there many other such cases in the NFL ? (i suppose i could research this but hey it's sunday and i'm just lazy)

I think Belichek was around 34 when he was DC with the Giants.

Jim Mora Jr. was also pretty young while coordinating the Niners, and I believe is currently the youngest HC (unless the new Niner coach is younger).

Eventually did some research.

Dungy became the league’s youngest defensive coordinator in 1984 at age 28.

The new SF coach is 45, so Mora Jr is still the youngest head coach at 44.

Bill Cowher was the Special Teams coach with the Browns at 28, Defensive Ccoordinator of the Chiefs at 32, and Head Coach of the Steelers at 35. He is still only 47.

Pretty impressive that Dungy was a coordinator by 28.

Thinking about the Patriots, do you think any of the loyalty that their players and coaches have shown the past few years will spread to Cleveland, now that Crennell is there? I would not be surprised to see a good bit of Patriots' flavor on the Browns

Yeah, I've thought about this. I fact, reason why I'm happy they promoted Mangini and he agreed to stay is I was almost certain he was gonna sign with Crennell in Cleveland...

You figure at his age he's best off to make a little less and hopefully ride the wave of success to a head coach position. Who knows whats going to happen at Cleveland. As much as i like Crennell they are certainly have a long way to go.

He was i think 36 or 37. Became the head coach of the Raiders in 1998 (he was born in 1962). Youngest to win the superbowl as well. I think this would make him still the youngest coach in the league, if Mora is 44.

yeah, according to nfl.com, he was born on August 17, 1963, which makes him 41 as of now, turning 42 in August. Pretty impressive if you ask me...

It should be interesting to see who becomes OC. I know they want to stay in house, but who else is there.
