This is pretty big news (and a few days old). He played 100 caps with the US National Mens Soccer Team.

He should have never left to go play for Everton - did he even play for them?

He was moderately successful at Everton, but had a lot of injury problems. Soccerbase says he played 64 times for Everton over three years (though more than half of his appearances were as a sub), scored 10 goals.
Remember seeing him playing a number of games for New England when I lived up there in the early MLS seasons. He was a different standard than the players around him. Seemed to be much more aware, planning instead of reacting. He stood out head and shoulders above his teammates, though he was upfront alongside Paul Keegan (one of the least talented players I've ever seen in pro-soccer) so maybe he just looked good in comparison ![]() Edit - just looked up the stats from the New England 1996 season, Joe-Max had 11 goals in 14 games, Paul Keegan had 4 goals in 27 games. OMG, someone cared!
Yeah it is pretty big news when someone who has 100 caps retires. That's like equal to 10 Pro Bowls in Football terms.

He's been all-but-retired for around two years now. In no way is this surprising, nor does it at all affect the U.S. men's national team, and hardly impacts his club team. If any of those three things were the case, I'd be willing to consider this as "big news". Alas, they're not, and this is no big deal.

Edit: As I suspected, even Ernie Stewart racked up 100 caps already and Stewart has by no means ever reached a "Pro Bowl" level of play, besides maybe one season in the Dutch league, where he played most of his career. Don't get me wrong, Stewart was a top50-100 calibre player in the late 90's, but not one of the best, say, 20 players in the league.
