Joe Gibbs -- Senile?

Redskins: Gibbs might have tampered

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Thursday, February 17, 2005

News
Joe Gibbs may have spoken too freely during a radio appearance on Monday when he stated that the agent for Panthers' wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad had told him, "Show me the money." The problem with the comment is that Muhammad is still under contract to the Panthers, which means the Skins are not allowed to speak with his agent regarding contract matters. Panthers' officials did not comment on the matter when reached by the Rock Hill Herald on Wednesday.

Views
If found guilty of tampering, the Redskins could be fined or lose draft picks. Oddly enough, the Panthers had two draft picks taken away in 1995 when they contacted their eventual head coach Dom Capers before league rules allowed. Panthers' officials don't seem to be too concerned over Gibbs' comments, but we'll continue to follow this story to see if the team files a complaint with the league.

Don't know about this statement, but I officially classified him as senile after he pulled the dreadful Brunnell midseason and then made the comment (to the effect of) 'Brunnell has a great future in this organization'.

Since when do late 30 QB's with a dead arm and millions of dollars on their contract have 'great futures'?

I think he proves senility every time he proclaims a love for nascar.

Is it silly to think that the Redskins could have made the playoffs had Ramsey played all season?

With their schedule last year and the way their defense played, I think Ramsey could have gotten them two more wins. Honestly Ramsey looked dreadful in preseason, so I can sorta see why he stared Brunnell. But it was painfully obvious after 2-3 games that Brunnell had nothing.

I think he was senile from the moment he signed Brunell and made him the starter over Ramsey. Brunell has been done for a couple of years and Ramsey at least shows potential.

No.

The NFC sucked. Ramsey would have meant 2-3 more wins for the 'Skins, easy. And they beat the Vikings head-to-head. 8-8 would have gotten them in.

Gibbs has never been a good personnel man. Great coach, but he needs a Bobby Beathard or Charley Casserly to put the roster together for him.

not at all. he had a great rapport with Laverneus Coles and they both would have put up real good seasons (at least that's what i was banking on when i drafted Coles in my money fantasy football league). they had to build on that, not take a step back by bringing in Brunell.

Are you serious? I'm I think we've gone beyond senile now. It's just high comedy over there.

Redskins and Coles Likely to Part Ways

37 minutes ago Sports - Reuters

WASHINGTON (Sports Network) - The Washington Redskins (news) and Laveranues Coles (news) have held discussions which will reportedly lead to the 27-year-old wide receiver's release.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs, team owner Daniel Snyder and Coles' agent Roosevelt Barnes have already reached an oral agreement on Coles' release, which would make him an unrestricted free agent.

An official announcement could come as early as Tuesday, the first day that NFL teams are allowed to waive or release players.

Coles evidently asked for a trade late this past season after a meeting with Snyder and vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato. However, after consulting with Gibbs, a decision was made to waive the former Florida State product.

The report also stated that if Coles is in fact let go, he would have to return part of his $13 million signing bonus to help ease salary cap ramifications.

Coles' displeasure with the way the offense is headed in Gibbs' ball-control philosophy is apparently the main contributor to his wanting out. Washington, which was 6-10 last year, ended the 2004 campaign with the 30th-ranked offense in the league.

Last season, Coles caught a career-best 90 catches, the third highest total in franchise history. However, his 950 yards and one touchdown reception were his lowest numbers since 2001.

Originally a third-round pick of the New York Jets (news) in 2000, Coles signed a monster seven-year $35 million deal as a restricted free agent with Washington prior to the start of 2003. At the time his $13 million bonus was the richest in Redskins' history and the Jets could not match the contract.

For his career, the 5-foot-11 Coles has caught 342 passes for 4,656 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Bizzare move. I wouldn't mind seeing the Jets bring him back.

Agreed. At least it would quiet those pining to trade Abraham for Randy Moss.

Mason is out there as well since the Titans have to "clean house" now. They are $27M over cap.

Hey Redskin fans... What would you do if he would go to play for the coach that (was the GM who) drafted him?

Bledsoe drops back... he's going deep... Coles is all by himself TOUCHDOWN!!! Man, he just ran right by Smoot on that one. That's his third score of the game, wow!

I think what you're smelling is the model glue the Redskins' brass has been huffing.

Wow.

Uhh... you do realize that Smoot is an UFA, and will probably be playing somewhere else? Like, maybe the Lions...
