Former Major Leaguer comments on steroids

Not named Jose Canseco.

Today on the morning show on WWLS-Oklahoma City, they talked to afternoon host, Jim Trabor regarding the steroids. It came up when they were going over the 50-home run hitters since George Foster and guessing whether they did or not. Pretty much they decided that the only one's who hadn't were Griffey, A-Rod, and Fielder. They weren't sure about Luis Gonzalez, so they called Trabor, a former D-Backs color commentator.

Anyway, they called him and he said that he thought Albert Belle probably didn't (the hosts guessed he used them), because he played with him and he was crazy then too and wasn't using them. He also, interestingly, said that he would guess Griffey used them, and that you don't have to be huge to be on steroids. He also guessed that A-Rod didn't, and didn't get asked about Cecil (seems like a pretty obvious no). He also said that he might guess yes on Brady Anderson, but that he was the first big leaguer to use creotine, and used it hard, but ultimately it could have been a cover.

Then, he was asked about Gonzalez and got kind of quiet and said "no comment." followed by another few seconds and "But, I hate to say it, but if I had to guess I'd say yes. I mean, he had three kids and just, I mean, I don't know one way or another, but I would have to guess yes," which leads me to think that it's pretty much a yes.

Just thought I'd pass that along, since it wasn't a national interview or anything like that, just local radio morning show stuff.

Forgive my ignorance, but I always thought creatine caused more water retention, meaning it was a great way to add mass but didn't do much to add power.

So some guy's guessing who was on steriods or not? Big deal. I mean it's pretty irresponsible reporting IMO, but whatever. We can all guess who took steriods or not, but without any proof it's just senseless guessing.

Am I missing something here?

Well, I mean, even a lot of what Jose Canseco is saying is guessing. Basically I was really meaning to write that Trabor was around Gonzalez a lot, and it basically sounded like he was trying to protect Gonzalez, but that he did it.

Not a scientist or anything, but from my friends who did take and still take substances with creatine, they say that it doesn't necessarily make you bigger, but it allows you to lift more...which makes you stronger.

I think Creatine is what allowed Big Mac to train harder, and that is what essentially allowed him to make it through full seasons during his big tear. Once he stopped the Creatine, he wasn't an everyday player.

I think that was Andro wasn't it?

It was andro, not creatine. But, I have a hard time believing that Mark McGwire didn't use steroids. I think it is laughable for the people who will sit there and say Barry used steroids, but Mark was clean. Look, I think we have to come to the realization that tons more players than two were juicing. Barry and Giambi were for sure, but what about others. I mean, McGwire, Sosa, Greg Vaughn, Brady Anderson, Sheffield, Bret Boone notwithstanding. All of this gives me more respect for Jeff Kent when he was a Giant, because I doubt he was juicing (but he could have, just as almost anyone could have).

Barry basically admitted to using steriods (although he claims unknowingly - he thought it was just a cream or something) as part of the Balco testimorny and was obviously a client of Balco, an accused steriod distributor.

The only evidence of steroids against Mark is Jose's acusations (note - I don't consider the bottle of Andro since it was over the counter at the time and it wasnt' like he was hiding it).

So while i have my suspicions about Mark, I can see where people would draw a line between him and Barry at this point. Call me crazy, but i subscribe to the innocent until proven guilty thing. Edit - although I guess i'm a bit hypocritical since Barry's official testimony is actually still sealed I think.
