Stupid People + Computers

[rant] People that do not know what they're doing with computers should not be allowed to touch any hardware short of THEIR OWN computer. My roommate, having problems connecting to the internet, decided the router must be the problem (without checking to verify that in fact my computer--which was on and fine--had NO PROBLEMS connecting). so he reset it.

I get a call (as I was out to lunch with my mom at the time) saying, "I reset the router and it asploded. Now I can't get anything to work."

"Ok, well, do you have the IP address of the router?"

"No."

"Ok, do you have the account info for comcast so if I need to, I can call them and figure it out when i get home?"

"No, and I don't have time to mess with it now, I'm going out." (at this point, I wondered why he felt a need to reset the router anyway just before leaving...)

I get home and fix the problem in about 3 minutes (somehow he managed to reset our user information so I had to go into the router and name it and setup the encryption again...not a big problem, especially since I keep track of router information like IP's). But seriously, how stupid do you have to be??? He just assumed that because his computer wasn't working that it must be with the router...and then didn't bother to pay attention to what was actually happening...and DIDN'T even know the account info for Comcast (the account is in his name).

Stupid people just annoy me.[/rant]

Ok, admittedly, this isn't so much a rant of him not knowing how to fix it once he "asploded" the router, it's more a rant of deciding that since his computer wasn't working, it must be the router's fault. ESPECIALLY since this weekend and yesterday he had problems connecting, too, and at those times I told him I was having no problems. That should have been a BIG clue it wasn't on the router end.

Alas. I stand by my conviction. If you're not sure of what you're doing (and I admit not everybody is as anal as me in terms of recording IP's, passwords, etc...), don't do anything.

BLEH.

I worked the help desk for the computer labs at my college for 3 1/2 years, plus I have a sister who is a complete idiot (with a computer). I'll die happy if I never have to show someone how to save a Word document to a floppy disk again....

"Where's my file, I know I saved it."
"Are you sure you saved it to you floppy disk?"
"How do I do that?"

[ open on Spokesman walking through a manufacturing plant ]

Spokesman: Hi! Does this ever happen to you?

[ mechanical equipment malfunctions ]

Engineer #1: Looks like the countersink flange went out on the CD-7 unit multiplier, knocking out hydraulic torque to the electric heat riser.

Engineer #2: Again?

Spokesman: Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Most countersink flanges will experience hydraulic torque leak throughout their less than 7,000 RQMs. Especially when coupled with the double-flux lumen switcher. But with Wilson Countersink Flanges and Dorry Flanges, hydraulic torque is allowed to bypass the settling clutch, providing steady wall pressure to the lug manifold and all the seismic rotors. And that goes for 7,000 RQMs, 8,000 RQMs, even up to 10,000 RQMS. That's right! 10,000!

Engineer #1: There, that does it! With that new Wilson Countersink Flange, this CD-7 should be able to handle vacuum-kickback on all 22 blossom valves!

Engineer #2: Now, if I could just get my kid to mow the lawn!

[ they laugh ]

Spokesman: Wilson Countersink Flanges and Dorry Flanges. Because when you've got hydraulic torque leakthrough, every second can mean lost pranktens!

Me: "(Name of old ISP), this is Rob."

Moron: "Are your servers down?"

Me: *yells across room to make sure everything's up* "Nope, we're all up, what's going on?"

Moron: "Well, I can't get on your fucking internet. This sucks. Etc. Etc. Etc."

Me: (Having heard all of this shit before.) "Alright alright. Let's just take it step by step, tell me what you're doing, and we'll get you running."

Moron: "I click on this Netscape thing and it never works!"

Me: "...you see that button right next to it that says CONNECT TO (ISP) FIRST!!!!!!! You actually have to connect before you do anything else."

Moron: "......."

Me: "Bye now."

And yes. When we installed our internet software, our icon to dial the modem was labeled exactly as such:

"Click here to connect to (ISP) FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Never do tech support at an ISP if you have any shred of faith in humanity.

Not yet. I haven't used it. Once I use a trendy phrase it has officially "jumped the shark."

TK is supposed to be moving here so she can trade sexual favors for use of my TV of Doom (tm). No need to replace her roommate.

I didn't know TK roomed with my brother.

My brother has blown up his and my mothers computers several times. And yes he's done the router reset thing.
