Interesting (Or Depressing) Bears Draft History

Article on the Trib. Ugh.

1995: Rashaan Salaam (RB); Flamed out after promising start.

1996: Walt Harris (CB); Played six solid, if not spectacular seasons.

1997: Rick Mirer (QB/trade); Flopped as answer to Bears' QB problem. Lasted one season.

1998: Curtis Enis (RB); Knee injury ended his career after three seasons.

1999: Cade McNown (QB); Bad attitude and shoulder injury added up to a two-year stay.

2000: Brian Urlacher (LB); A Pro Bowler first four seasons; team's best No. 1 pick since 1980s.

2001: David Terrell (WR); Gone after four seasons of unfulfilled promise.

2002: Marc Colombo (OT); Angelo's first pick, trying to return from double knee surgery.

2003: Michael Haynes (DE); Backs up Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye.

2003: Rex Grossman (QB); Goes to camp No. 1 on depth chart; recovering from knee surgery.

2004: Tommie Harris (DT); Started as rookie and didn't disappoint.

I think Urlacher is a bit overrated.

This is almost as bad as the Redskins draft history.

Check out the Lions draft history from 2000-2004, Roy Williams - WR, Kevin Jones - RB, Charles Rogers - WR, Joey Harrington - QB, Jeff Backus - T, Stockar McDougle - T.

Its not a bad list at all and the Lions still stink. Detroit fans(and im one) have 2 great days a year and thats the draft days.

That sucks.

That reminds me of a series of drafts the Steelers had in the 70s and 80s.

1986 John Reinstra G Temple
1985 Darryl Sims DE Wisconsin
1984 Louis Lipps WR Southern Mississippi (this is really the only good pick)
1983 Gabriel Rivera NT Texas Tech
1982 Walter Abercrombie RB Baylor
1981 Gary Keith DE Oklahoma
1980 Mark Malone QB Arizona St.
1979 Greg Hawthorne RB Baylor
1978 Ron Johnson CB Eastern Michigan
1977 Robin Cole LB New Mexico
1976 Bennie Cummingham TE Clemson
1975 Dave Brown DB Michigan

This stretch wasn't quite as bad, but it still wasn't good:

1996 Jamain Stephens T NC A&T - total bust
1995 Mark Bruener TE Washington - good blocker
1994 Charles Johnson WR Colorado - solid, but had over 800 yards receiving only twice
1993 Deon Figures CB Colorado - lost figures in 1997 to Jacksonville
1992 Leon Searcy T Miami - good player, with Steelers only 4 years
1991 Huey Richardson LB Florida - total bust
1990 Eric Green TE Liberty - decent player, but only with the Steelers 5 years
1989 Tim Worley RB Georgia - total bust
1989 Tom Ricketts T Pittsburgh - total bust

Dave Brown only played one season with the Steelers, but he went on to a pretty darned good career (mainly with the Seahawks, who took him in the expansion draft). He ended up with 62 INTs and scads of games played.

It's a shame that the Bears first round picks have been so terrible, because they have done a pretty good job of picking up good players in the 2nd to 4th rounds. M. Brown, A. Brown and Tillman for example.

I know you left out 87/88. The Steelers drafted Woodson in 1988 which was a great pick, but I can't remember who they took in 87.

I weep for those QB picks (Grossman excepted). I fear this year will be a further addition to that list. Especially if they don't take a LEFT TACKLE.

'89 was about the time I started getting into NFL. I remember that crappy draft--I was excited at the time. Huey Richardson was a painful one, too.
