The 2006 World Cup is being held in Germany.
Group A
Team Rankings: Brazil - 1 England - 12 Republic of Congo - 50 Canada - 53 Brazil and England should have no problems here. Group B
Team Rankings: Spain - 11 Honduras - 27 Zimbabwe - 43 Switzerland - 44 Spain should win the group with 2nd place up for grabs. Group C
Team Rankings: Portugal - 6 Belgium - 17 Uruguay - 19 Iran - 33 This group is solid, but Portugal should be a safe bet. Group D
Team Rankings: Colombia - 5 France - 15 Italy - 16 South Korea - 23 Wow. What a tough draw for these big name nations. Group E
Team Rankings: Argentina - 3 Australia - 9 Denmark - 14 Saudi Arabia - 21 Lots of talent here. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Argentina falls flat and doesn't advance. Group F
Team Rankings: Mexico - 2 Holland - 8 Wales - 35 Mali - 40 I don't care how good Ryan Giggs is, there is no way Wales advances. Group G
Team Rankings: USA - 4 Greece - 7 Cameroon - 30 Germany - 48 The host nation has some work to do to get to the next round. How far will the US go? Group H
Team Rankings: Morocco - 10 Czech Republic - 13 Sweden - 26 Iraq - 58 Not sure if the Czech's will advance as they have two key injuries.

Group Stage - Recap After 2 Matches
As predicted, Brazil and England have already advanced. Neither team has an injury too.
The Swiss play Zimbabwe and should earn 3 pts. in that one. Which means Spain needs at least a tie to advance. Honduras will be rooting hard for the Swiss to lose.
Portugal has a match with Belgium and Uruguay plays Iran. Cristiano Ronaldo is injured and will miss 2 weeks for Portugal.
Columbia will probably earn 3 pts. against South Korea meaning France needs to beat Italy.
Denmark needs Argentina to lose to Australia and then they need to win by 3 against the Saudis.
Holland is already into the elimination round and Mexico is about an 80% lock as their is no way Mali makes up that G.D.
Cameroon is in unless they get blown out by Greece. The US needs to beat the hosts as they have only been able to manage two ties. Come on Bruce, make it happen.
The Czech only have Iraq left which means they are in. Sweden needs to beat Morocco because of G.D.

There must be riots throughout the host country with Germany finishing
at the bottom of the group and crashing out, especially with the USA winning the group. Karmic justice for the US-Germany match in 2002 ? ![]() |

Second Round Matches
England (p) 0 - 0 Spain - England totally dominated this match. They held 65% possession and outshot Spain 13-6. The match went to penalties and England won 4-3, with Beckham the only man missing for England. Brazil 2 - 0 Switzerland - The Swiss were overmatched in this one. Brazil held a 38%-5% possession advantage in the Swiss end. They outshot the Swiss 29-5 and their goals were scored by Emerson (7') and Juan (64'). Italy 1 - 0 Portugal - Italy controlled the ball all game long. They outhshot Portugal 16-3. The lone goal was scored by Fabrizio Miccoli (35'). Columbia 1 - 0 Uruguay - Finally a game where it was even throughout. Columbia held 49% possession as they outshout Uruguay 9-6. The lone goal was scored by Fabian Andres Vargas (11'). Australia 1 - 3 Holland - The Dutch only had 48% of the possession, but when they had it they knew what to do with it. They were outshot 10-11, but 8 of their shots were on target. Van Nistelrooy scored in the 35' and Australia's Danny Allsopp tied it in the 76'. Van Nistelrooy scored again in the 78' and Giovanni van Bronckhorst added a goal in the 83'. Mexico 0 - 1 Argentina - Argentina outshot Mexico 17-10 and held 52% possession. The only goal was scored by Carlos Tevez (17'). Cameroon 4 - 0 Czech Republic - Cameroon and 10 players earn an 8 or better in this match. They outhost the Czech's 14-9 and held the highest scoring team from the group stage without a goal. An own goal by Milan Fukai (26') started the scoring. Stepane Biakolo (33'), Mohammadou Idrissou (54') and Valery Mezegue (90') rounded out the scoring. Sweden 1 - 0 USA - The US played this one without Landon Donovan who was injured in the Germany game. Possession was 50/50, but the Swedes outshot the US 15-8. Tim Howard was named MoM, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic was able to get one past Howard in the 29'. Quarterfinal Match Preview England vs. Italy - England will be without Joe and Ashley Cole due to injury. Italy is a 6-4 favorite at the moment. Brazil vs. Columbia - Brazil is a huge 1-2 favorite and I see no reason why they should not advance to the semis. Argentina vs. Cameroon - Agrentina is still without Javier Saviola who has not played a match in this World Cup. Cameroon played very well in the 2nd Rd, but Argentina is still a 4-6 favortie. I'm taking Cameroon in this one. Holland vs. Sweden - Holland is an even favorite and should handle the Swedes.

Quarterfinal Matches
Brazil 1 - 0 Colombia - This game was ALL Brazil. They dominated possession 66%-34%. They had a 27-3 shot advantage. Julio Baptista missed a penalty in the 10'. Emerson scored the lone goal in the 26'. England 0 - 0 (p) Italy - England goes to penalties again, but are not as lucky this time around. England held 56% possession in the match, but the shots were equal at 8. Italy won on penalties 4-3 as England missed their last 2 chances (Gary Neville + Jonathan Woodgate). Holland 3 - 0 Sweden - Another lopsided match as the Swedes didn't have a prayer. Holland held the ball for 59% possession and outshot Sweden 14-4. Goals were scored by Dirk Kujit (30'), Wesley Sneijder (53') and Rafael van der Vaart (82'). Argentina 1 - 0 Cameroon - Argentina just does not want to lose. Cameroon kept it close with 46% possession and they were only outshot 8-11. Pablo Aimar had to leave the game with a broken toe and will miss the rest of the cup as Argentina advance on a goal by Claudio Lopez (65').

Holland
Holland is the only team so far to win all its matches. They have also scored the most goals (15) and come in with a +13 G.D. Italy has only managed 3 goals, but they have yet to concede one. I'm going to put my money on Holland even though I'm a manager in Italy. ![]() Holland comes out in a 3-4-3 and Italy counters with a defensive 3-5-2. 39' - Legrottaglie lines up to take a free kick about 20 yds. from the Italy goal. His shot deflects off the wall and almost past Buffon; however, the rebound runs free to the left of goal and Roy Makaay is the first man their for Holland. He crosses the ball to Arjen Robben who is their to put it in the vacated net as Buffon went to chase after the rebound. HOLLAND 1-0. Holland leads at the half, but Italy controlled the flow of the match with 56% possession. Shots are even at 2. 53' - The Italians patiently work the ball upfield and Totti sends a cross from the right over towards De Rossi. Holland's Bouma is their to clear it out, but it deflects off another player and right to Fabrizio Miccoli who beats the keeper to the near post. ALL SQUARE 1-1. 62' - Miccoli is injured by Robben and has to leave the pitch. The whistle blows and after 90 minutes the match is tied. Italy has a 7-3 shot advantage and they still have 56% possession. Both teams have used up their 3 subs for the match and nobody is shining in this match as everyone has a 7 or 6 rating. Italy's keeper, Buffon, has a minor knock which might come into play if we need PK's. The extra time has ended and we are going to PENALTIES!!! Holland outshot Italy 3-0 in extra time, but could not get anything on goal. Italy had 51% possession in the extra time. Both keepers have a 5 rating going into the PK's. ![]() First up for Holland is Wilfred Bouma with a 14 in PK skill. HE SCORES. Francesco Totti is first for Italy with a 17 PK skill. HE SCORES. Holland sends up Wesley Sneijder with an 18 skill. HE SCORES. Italy's Alessandro Del Piero is next with a 19 skill. IT'S SAVED! Roy Makaay is next up for Holland with an 18 skill. IT'S SAVED! Brazil
Argentina
This game should be just as good if not better than the first semifinal. I'm going to bet on Brazil to win this one however. Brazil come out in a 4-3-1-2 and Argentina comes out in a basic 4-4-2. 45' - Brazil has put a lot of pressure on Argentina thus far and off a throw in, Franca receives the pass in the box and beats the keeper to the far post. BRAZIL 1-0. Brazil leads at the half as they have outshot Argentina 13-2 and have controlled 55% possession. 65' - Kily Gonzalez' throw in finds Carlos Tevez in the box. Brazil's Lucio climbs up to head it out, but is called for a foul. PENALTY!!! Gonzalez steps up to the spot and calmly puts it home. The announcers can't believe the call!!! ALL SQUARE 1-1. 72' - Argentina is finally awake and they are the ones forcing the issue now. Dida comes up with a big save to keep Brazil tied. 77' - Lucio sends a nice ball to Gil, who just came on, and he gets to it before the Argentine keeper can. Saja is now off his line and Gil puts it past him for the goal. BRAZIL 2-1. Argentina desprately tries to mount a comeback as they send everybody forward, but it's not enough. BRAZIL WINS 2-1!!! Brazil had a 25-7 shot advantage and they held the ball for 53% possession.

3rd Place Match
Italy 2 - 0 Argentina - Italy got a goal by Marco Di Vaio in the 28' and then spent the rest of the match a man up as Juan Sebastian Veron was sent off in the 36'. Bernardo Corradi (75') added the other goal. Shots were even at 6 and Italy had 55% possession.

Holland
Brazil
This is Holland's 3rd WC Final. They lost in '74 and '78. They come out in a 3-4-3. Brazil is in the final for the 8th time and they have 5 titles and are the defending champions. They come out in a 4-3-1-2. I expect to see some goals scored today and I'm going to have to bet on the favorite, Brazil. 12' - Van Nistelrooy receives a long ball and he is onside. He takes it into the box and he puts it past Dida for the goal. HOLLAND 1-0. 20' - Julio Baptista unleashes an awesome bender from 25 yds. out that finds the corner of the goal. ALL SQUARE 1-1. 24' - Snejider lines up to take a free kick from 30 yds. out. His shot deflects off the wall and Dida can not recover in time as it rolls past him. HOLLAND 2-1. 45' - Two minutes into extra time Brazil end up with a free kick outside the Holland box. Dede plays a short ball to Baptista who sends a cross into the box for Edmilson who wins the header and directs it into the net. ALL SQUARE 2-2. The half ends with both teams scoring on their only two shots on goal. Brazil has outshot Holland 9-3 so far, but Holland has owned 58% possession. 70' - Van Nistelrooy sends a long cross to Makaay who advances into the box and beats Dida to the near post. HOLLAND 3-2. Brazil run out of time... HOLLAND WINS IT'S FIRST WORLD CUP!!! Holland was outshot 7-15, but they contolled 59% possession. MoM went to Ruud Van Nistelrooy who had 1 goal and 2 assists to earn a 9.
