PING: Long Beach FOFCers
I will be arriving at Long Beach airport around 11am on Friday April 2nd. I have nothing to do until Saturday evening (when i'll be at Alex's Bar watching Spider Stacey of the Pogues perform Pogues songs backed by the Filthy Theiving Bastards).
What's there to do in the Long Beach area? Things i should see, good bars, etc etc etc. I'm not really looking to do the tourist deal, just see what's what. by the way, anyone in the area should come down to see Spider Stacey, the man is a legend |

Is it your first time in the LBC? I've been to Alex's. Its a cool bar.
Go down to the Pike or hangout on Pine or 2nd street. They're all good atmosphere areas. |

Long Beach Grand Prix Weekend in April 9-10....qualifying day at the Long Beach Grand Prix is usually a great time with lots of people and lots of cool things to check out in the expo hall...
You can go check out the Queen Mary, that's a pretty interesting tour....they also have an 1970's Soviet diesel submarine right next to it that is a creepy venture into the world of underwater seafaring...not a whole lot of room in those puppies. |

So.. to Hijack...
MC - Need music recommendations... I listen to a lot of Flogging Molly, Dropkick, some Pogues, some Chieftans, and a local band (The Jeff Greer Band), that I'm sure you have not heard of and who is technically broken up... Who else should I grab music from? I've got some Pepsi bottle caps to burn...

As brad said, the Pike is pretty cool to check out. I work at the GameWorks at the Pike (I'm the fat Asian dude with long hair, occasionally pissy-looking, kinda tough to miss). Since they never managed to get the Laugh Factory opened up, there isn't much else as "attractions" at the Pike. Plenty of restaurants, though.
Queen Mary is always worth checking out. Just pretty cool, in general. I haven't been to the Aquarium in awhile so I don't know how it is now. The Pike is next to the Convention Center and the Terrace Theatre so there's usually a concert or a play of some sort going on. 2nd street is a cool place to hang out, as brad said. Not much as far as "attractions" goes, but a cool place to hang out and check out the various shops in general. Shoreline Village (short bus ride from the Pike) is also a cool place to check out. Nothing spectacular but pretty cool to see, in general. Gameworks have their own bars (2, actually) and, if you're not too tired, there's a live band playing on Friday night after 9 (better yet, go in at 8-8:30 so you don't have to pay the $5 door charge). Since I'm usually either on the other side of the venue or gone by the time they start, I have no idea of the quality of those bands. Some of our resident alcoholics at work favours the Dubliner (a pub near Gameworks) and New York Brians (up the street on Pine) for their off-day imbibing. As someone who rarely drinks, I have no clue. The famous bar, of course, is the Executive Suite which was featured in the VH1 Behind the Music thing on Melissa Etheridge as the bar she hung out at when she came to the West Coast from the Midwest. |

awesome
thanks for the ideas guys. Is Long Beach a place i can walk around? or am i going to need to mess with public transportation to get around? Mind you, i'm used to Boston and i tend to avoid taking the subway when i'm there and just walk all over the place |

Depends on where you are staying and where you intend to hang out at. But, more than likely, you'll probably have to do public transportation.
