Noticed you getting grilled in the USA conference. Not that I really follow the NT, because I don't follow it at all. I'd think it's better to shoot for a medal, and lose early then to do what Belgium did and get to the next round only to lose because you destroyed your team spirit. Then again, the US is a tiny hattrick nation and everyone seems to take great pleasure in smacking us around in soccer

Wrong!

That type of attitude sets the national team up for failure which consequently diminishes interest in the national team season after season. By "shooting the moon" you're essentially basing more of the team's chances of advancing on luck than on tactical prowess since you sacrifice winning games for higher team spirit in the later rounds. Setting unrealistic goals and not achieving them is harmful to the spirit and less people will "care" about following the squad. Sure, maybe once in a blue moon that ideology works, but every time it fails (which is a large majority in the case of the USA) its at the cost of the national team's future success (since less people will care about the team, hence less teams will actually dedicate resources at making the squad better).

Good point. How many people would have been up in arms had I not PICed? I imagine quite a few, with the point of "shooting for the moon", which I was.

Well I guess the manager would have to state what their goals are for the team then. Do you play to win the tournament, or do you play to win your next game. I'd guess that most of our past managers played to win the tournament and that eventually was their downfall.

Now that I think about it, the world cup is quite similar to the national cup. Their are a lot of teams that have a shot at winning, but because of injuries and training they don't always field their best club. Then their are teams like mine that know they have no shot in hell at winning the thing. But teams like mine can take out a few superior clubs by surprising them. The past two years, I pulled some cupsets, not because my team was better, but because my opponent's figured they could PIC and win while I was playing my junk trainees in my league matches and MOTS them. While this strategy won't really win me the cup, it will get me to the next round. Which is a better outcome then going home early.

I thought we could make it to the Top 8 based on PICing in all honesty. The loss to Italy, despite the Jude controversy, was a fluke. Belgium's mistake will be repaid.

We're toast. The final match of the round is completely meaningless to us in terms of group play, so we have complete freedom to decide to try to screw Belgium, if we don't value the ranking points for setting up the qualification draw.

I feel for you AE. You can't let people get you down over things that are out of your control. You can only do your best and try to do it right, which you've done.

Paybacks are hell.

The worst part about this loss is it leaves US users with nothing to do on the USA conference but bitch and whine for the next 6 weeks. I'm also placing the over/under on number of premature campaign threads that lytic has to close at 6. I figure the first one closed will be by Nerdlebert or ObiwankenobeeZ long about Friday within 2 hours after the Misr game.

I'm going to run, because I badly want to see the USA roster become a counterattacking team, and think we have the players to be exceptionally good at it. But, I can already tell that the upcoming election is going to be awful. Hopefully lytic is tyrannical enough to keep it civil. I made bad mistakes last time I ran 4 seasons ago and decided I wouldn't run again until I could keep a cooler head---sorry about several seasons ago AE. Here's one person who will be running at least that won't rip you on every occassion.

I'm not sure if anyone else has read a few of the threads in global but it seems its more of a we hate the USA for none hattrick reasons, so let's fucking pile it on and support Belgium because we hate America. Well fuck Belgium, I hope Italy pounds them into the fucking ground tomorrow and Misr beats the snot of the USA. I really wish I could post that in global, but I have a feeling they'd fine me and ban me :-)

A good reason not to read global. I don't even bother subscribing to it.

That and all the ridiculous newbie questions from people who can't figure out how to push the little green button to subscribe to a Newbie questions conference.

I don't think I'll be travelling to Italy or Belgium any time soon. Egypt is probably safe, though.
