IWS#105 results

I’m With Stupid – RESULTS!
33 entries. Not bad i guess.

#1 – Name the best college basketball coach of all-time?
John Wooden 23
Dean Smith 7
Coach Krychewski or however the hell you spell his name. That bastard from Duke. 1
Larry Bird 1
UCLA 1

I figured it would be a battle between Wooden and Smith. Looks like winning 7 consecutive titles trumps 12 consecutive trips to the Sweet 16.
I was surprised that Coach K only received one vote. (Thank you Raven Hawk for the best response of the contest.) In the end, this one was an eliminator.

#2 – Which conference in the best in college basketball?
ACC 26
Big East 3
Big 12 2
Big10 1
Pac10 1

This was designed to be an eliminator and it was.

#3 – Which team had the best nickname in this year's Sweet 16?
Utah Utes 6
North Carolina Tar Heels 6
Illinois Fighting Illini 5
West Virginia Mountaineers 4
Texas Tech Red Raiders 3
NC State Wolfpack 2
Wisconsin Badgers 2
Duke Blue Devils 2
Bucknell Bison 1
Wildcats 1
Hornets 1

I had no idea what to expect on this one and it appears that I was not alone. However, I didn't expect the Illinois Illini and the Utah Utes to rank as high as they did. Best nickname in my opinion...probably Wolfpack.

#4 – Which team (no longer in the tournament) was the biggest Cinderella story of 2005?
UW-Milwaukee 22
West Virginia 5
Vermont 4
Bucknell 1
Duke 1

I wasn't sure how big the Panthers story played out in the rest of the country. Obviously, here in Milwaukee it was huge. Nice to see the team get their props. It was not designed to be but this was yet another eliminator question.

#5 – Hoops, B-ball, Buckets, Roundball or Basketball?
Hoops 21
Basketball 12

I thought that this was an extremely clever question. Guess I was wrong. (note to self - do not design questions at 3am)

#6 – Who will win the NCAA basketball tourney this year?
North Carolina 18
Illinois 14
Duke 1

Interesting. The majority of the answers were submitted well in advance if the semi-final games and 97% of you picked one of the finalists. Nice job. Stupid knows basketball, I guess.

Yep, I broke the first rule of "list" questions, always choose the first option. I just figured that since basketball was used throughout the entire IWS, the last option would be more viable.

Shurg.

This was designed to be an eliminator and it was.

I thought when designing IWS questions the goal was always to get a wide spread and NOT have eliminators...

Son of a bitch. I picked North Carolina in my tournament brackets, but I thought everyone else would go with Illinois. Why am I trying to think in a contest with Stupid?

I would have won if I had been capable of going with my head and knowing that stupid would pick John Wooden. That may be the only IWS question ever that I knowingly put a wrong answer b/c i couldn't bring myself not to say Dean Smith. Oh well

The correct answer to #3 should be this. I am disappointed in you all . . .

I went with "when in doubt, pick the #1 team in the nation". Apparently that was a bit too stupid for stupid.

I almost posted about this as well, but I figured it was futile to argue with stupid(s). Milwaukee did well to make the Sweet 16, but West Virginia was about a pussy hair away from the final four.

I was writing West Virginia, when I did a double-take. "Cinderella" is key. At #12, UW-Milwaukee was a bigger story to get to the sweet 16 then #7 WVU, who needed just 1 upset to make it that far.

WVU made the elite 8, not just the sweet 16. Then they led by 20 before losing in overtime. A #7 making the elite 8 is a pretty big deal, especially considering they beat a Wake Forest team that most felt should've been a #1 seed.

There's no way a Big East team making the Elite Eight is a bigger Cinderella story than a Horizon League team making the sweet 16.

Shouldn't you be busy game planning?
Maybe you could use my team's "first quarter" game plan and do exactly the reverse?
