Farrah's going to be a mom!!

We recently found out that Farrah and I are going to be the parents of a baby boy sometime in the fall

Any advice from the large (and growing) group of parents on FOFC.

Given how feisty he's been of late, I think there's no question on the father

Shouldn't this thread be properly titled "Arlie's gonna be a dad!" or else let Farrah be the one to break the news?

Congratulations on the good news, Mr. and Mrs. Rahn. That should liven things up there in Arizona. That is great news!

1. Get some sleep now. Store it up, because it's going to be hard to come by.

2. Want to travel, see movies, go out to eat? Get cracking, because you can kiss that bye bye.

3. Like sleeping in? It's all over, so get it out of your system. Sure, you can switch off with the wife, but kids still make lots of noise.

4. They say wives nest before the baby comes, and it's true, but you need to make sure that if there are any projects around the house you want to do, get them done before the baby comes.

5. Depending on the birth method, you may have to go for a while without sex, so make sure you get a lot of that in, too.

6. Read about what to expect.

Oh, and congrats!

I normally get by on 5 hours a night as it is.

I'm up to walk the dogs every morning at 5:30.

That better not happen Maybe I'm a bit naive, but I don't think it will change that much (outside of the birthing timeframe)

Yeah, I've already picked up a few books on the subject.

In the case of negative 7 month old Rahn Baby, Arlie, you are NOT the father.

Plenty:

Get the Diaper Champ. No special bags and easier to change than the Diaper Genie, and everything else is a cheap piece of junk.

The baby will tell you what it's schedule is. Just take your time and run down the checklist: hungry? diaper? nap? It'll be one of the three, and you'll figure out which cry means what eventually.

Get the Baby Bjorn carrier (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/se...146646-1952830). We tried to get cheaper ones, and they were all wasted money.

When buying a crib, buy a CRIB, not a convertible or all the other fancy stuff. When it gets time for the kid to move to a bed, you'll want an actual toddler bed (lower to the ground), but most of the cribs seem to convert to full-size regular-height beds. You can buy toddler beds that take crib mattresses or twin mattresses, and the child will transition to them much better. Also, don't worry about drop-down sides on the crib: they make the cribs weaker and shakier, and you won't use it nearly as much as you think.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...146646-1952830. Best crib toy ever. Our child is 2 years and 2 months and still using this every night/morning.

Speaking of crib toys, go to http://www.nichd.nih.gov/sids/sids.cfm and read up on the "Back to Sleep" program. Infant sleeps on back, with just a nice cotton blanked in the crib. No bumpers, no stuffed animals, nothing. Very important safety information, sleeping on the back is the only recommendation that has done anything to reduce SIDS mortality rates. Note that these recommendations don't include any of the "holders" that keep the child on their back.

Graco Quatro Tour Stroller (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=glance&s=toys). Best stroller ever. One handed collapse and put in car but still VERY sturdy. We're not the only people we know who had to dump our old stroller, ended up trying this one, and will never go back.

I never thought I could deal with all the messy bits of being a parent (diapers, throw up, etc). It's amazing how little those things bother you when it's your child.

Most of all, enjoy every single minute. You have no idea how your life is about to change, and no one can describe it in any way that will make sense, but you'll understand once your back home from the hospital. The boy will be the most precious thing on earth to you.

Fixed that for ya sweetie.

And considering I can't remember the last time I slept with a man that wasn't Arlie, I think it's pretty safe to assume it's his baby.

Nobody has mentioned that you should enjoy the breasts while you can. In about 6 months or so they'll be so sore she won't let you touch them...

Oh, and the increase in hormone levels will make the sex feel much better. No offense meant, but it takes average _____ and makes it wonderful _____!

WHOO! Man, that's a good one.

Congrats to you both, and take Sachmo's advice. Since the twins came, I've been thinking it would be so easy to just deal with one, but when Andrew was born I remember both Elaine and I were overwhelmed (and she had already HAD two kids).

To which my wife would add Saltines and, specifically, Big Red cinnamon gum. Powerful stuff that.

Two words of advice: Bouncy. Seat. Unless you plan on holding this child until he walks, buy one. It's the only way we got to eat dinner.

Congrats. It's incredible.
