PureSim Aging/Career Arc/GM Tweaks

SkyDog, the next PureSim update has some tweaks that should help address your points that leagues skew a bit on the old side regarding avg age of players on teams as well as avg age that players debut in the majors.

Here is what is coming in 8.2 so far

Wow, those top two are pretty cool sounding to me. This may get me to give PureSim a try, I have baseball fever and I need a game to get into....

I bought the game early on but just haven't had the time/desire to jump into PureSim (or any other games , for that matter). However, with baseball season started and this update coming, I'll hold off on starting a PureSim career until 8.2.

I don't usually bitch quite that aggressively, even when I *know* I'm right, as in that case. That thread came at a point when I was getting frustated with the progress on Mogul (which has gotten better since), and then, when I ran Puresim overnight and saw that the situation there was actually a little *worse* than both OOTP and Mogul, it just set me off. I really appreciate both Shaun and Clay addressing this. I'll very likely be purchasing Puresim upon release of 8.2.

I just saw this post over at Puresim Baseball's boards. 8.2 Will have new one button in-game strategy management features. I know thios isn't revolutionary but it was one of the knocks on the game in the past. Now if we can just get Shaun to get real historical rookies drafted on to the correct teams ala Baseball Mogul I would be in baseball nirvana.

Yeah, I was hoping for the update itself so I could start playing the game this weekend. Oh well.

Sorry to get hopes up by bumping this, but I thought y'all might want to know that Shaun has posted the complete fix list for 8.2, and says that a beta release of it is coming this weekend.

PureSim Baseball 2005 Release 8.2 Fixes / Tweaks / Features =================================
  • Added a "show other team" button to the lineup card screen that is available when managing a game
  • When managing a game the user no longer has to open the strategy window in order to make strategy moves like stealing, hit and run etc... They are listed in the play by play window with the associated key press.
  • Tweak - Greatly reduced the frequency that below average / poor batters will swing on 3-0.
  • Tweak - Added Passed Balls. Note: The probability of a passed ball is primarily influenced by the catcher's hands and range
  • Tweak - Added Wild Pitches, added WP stat to player card and pitch stats leader board. Note: the probability of a wild pitch is higher for low control pitchers and greatly increases if a pitcher is fatigued
  • Fix - when creating an association with a custom engine sttings file not all engine adjustments were being applied initially (for example player generation tweaks)
  • Fix - Wild Card scheduling now adheres to the MLB rule where the WC team can't play a team in its own division in the first round of the playoffs. It will be matched against the division winner with the next-best record.
  • Tweak - AI Values youth and potential more, especially if it is coming off a few rough seasons
  • Tweak - Older players wallowing in the minors, that are nearing the end of their contract are more likely to retire (Yes this means you might be able to demote a veteran in the last year or 2 of a contract and maybe coax him to retire)
  • During the free agent bidding and signing period human GM's now have the ability to make a counter offer to a player that is about to sign a deal with another team (if you had previously made an offer to the player)
  • Tweak - For retired players career totals are now displayed in the stats summary box under the player's picture on the player card
  • Tweak - Added major league debut year and debut age to the player card
  • Fix - No current record error when viewing player card in some replay mode associations using real players.
  • Fix - Some associations would receive Error 91 when using real players and attempting to sim past 2009 in replay mode.
  • Tweak - Added Oldest and Youngest columns for minor and major leagues to the Player Ages Report (Under Stats and Reports -> Misc Reports)
  • Tweak - Added Batter "EYE" rating to grids on trade offer screen
  • Fix - After importing a schedule (OOTP, PureSim or Retrosheet) That was a different length than the original association schedule qualifiers were not being adjusted for stat leader categories
  • Fix - After importing a schedule that was a different length than the original association schedule the trading deadline was not being updated
  • Tweak - Added support for importing OOTP6 schedules in .TXT format (previously the user had to rename them to *.CSV)
  • Fix - Sometimes expansion packs written for the team screen would not display properly
  • Fix - Phantom scrollbar was sometimes appearing at the bottom of the team screen.

SD - you know how picky I can be about games, so I'll ask you this -- is the game, right now, before the 8.2 fix list, something I can play with over this weekend & enjoy? Or am I going to end up more frustrated that happy? (additional frustration is NOT on my list for this weekend).

I'll even be more specific, maybe that'll help somebody answer this question.

I'd be happy to pass time this weekend by playing through a bunch of seasons, starting with the Dodgers in the late 40's/early 50's and then working through time from there.

No real idea, to be honest. Because of the aging issue, I didn't fool with 8.1 for very long. Other than aging, though, I liked what I saw.

Following up on Jon's question, is this file a complete build or just a patch? I'm suffering from Baseball fever and would like to give PureSim another spin.

I just finished and downloading. It does appear to be a complete build. Going to use one of my 30 trial starts of it now to see what I think of it.

Ok, I just started an association in 1900 and told it to Autoplay until 2004. This should be a good test to see how the speed issues are (I used Fast Speed sim option.)

I remember having a text size problem the last time I ever tried to play PureSim (back when I was in Atlanta in October) and that seems to have been fixed by what I've changed on my computer since that time.

That was disappointing. I was getting good sim speed with the first season simming in under 6 minutes, but it hung up in the offseason and is not responding. I've given it almost 10 minutes and it hasn't moved past week 6 of 16 in some stage where it is trying to decide what the players want.

Hmm ... everytime I've tried to bunt, I get "unexpected error 91".
Not exactly a sparkling experience because of that.

The in-game management window was totally revamped. It used to be 2 clicks - now is one. While bunting is not new, the process is one of the suggestions that was implemented for this version.

"When managing a game the user no longer has to open the strategy window in order to make strategy moves like stealing, hit and run etc... They are listed in the play by play window with the associated key press."

I guess it just confounds me that something this obvious even made it out the door. I feel kinda like I wasted my time even downloading this .. but that's the way it goes.

I'm likewise disappointed by the game freezing up in my first offseason. I was trying it on a brand new ultrafast computer as well. Oh well.

That's why it's a beta. Shaun typically doesn't release beta versions like this one, but this release has a number of additions and tweaks. I'm sure he'll have it fixed by the end of the weekend.

You would think that someone who isn't interested in 'annoyances' wouldn't download the first version of a BETA release, but if you want to find something to complain about, you found it.

Well thank you Mr. Fanboy, how 'bout you get your nose out of his ass long enough to think it through?

My question, which I wasn't planning to pose so bluntly is basically this -- how in the blue fucking hell does something that crashes on bunt attempts even get off the developer's fucking desk?

Wiped the rest, because I totally twisted my brain around everything else I was typing. (NEVER type while on the phone with your wife)

I've got better shit to do then argue with a whiny ass bitch like you. You clearly don't understand what 'beta' means, and you don't want to twist your brain around a beta that's been released for a few hours.

Obviously, it shouldn't crash, but it's a fucking beta and sometimes shit happens. I'm sure it will be fixed in a matter of hours - does that make me a fanboy? I don't know or don't care, I just know it will get fixed.

It's time to just rename this place Front Office Whiny Bitch Central.

The "twist my brain' refers to an edit I made to my original post, where I referred to Puresim as Mogul while finishing the post while talking on the phone. Rather than fix it, I just wiped the original paragraph that made the reference.

I also downloaded the beta and experienced a simming crash. Not sure where since I wasn't at my computer.

I agree that you have to somehow expect this since it is a beta release, but at the same time I wouldn't be going to various forums and promoting the release if it wasn't relatively stable.

That being said I appreciate that Shaun is working on the issues that people have concerns with.

Sheesh. I just read the rest of this thread. When a solo developer with another full-time job releases a beta patch, one should expect to, oh, I don't know, BETA TEST it, shouldn't they? Jon, if you didn't want to beta test, you should have downloaded 8.1 instead of 8.2 Beta. You're brighter than that.

Well SD, you're at least right in a way. I should have, and probably did, know better than to bother with this.

I mistakenly interpreted concern about things like player-aging algorithms as a sign that basic things like, say, bunting, worked. By now, I should have known better, and that is indeed my fault - you know what happens when we assume.

I think what it really boils down to is that maybe I've just reached the point where it's time for me to abandon most of the whole text-sim thing, and just stick to the tabletop. That means I play less, but get aggravated less in return. (Yeah, that isn't exactly a new revelation either, but as you know, my attention is sort of split between a number of things right now, my decision-making ain't even what it usually is).

You're right

how in the blue fucking hell does something that crashes on bunt attempts even get off the developer's fucking desk?

You are correct. I missed that one. I added so much in this release that I just forgot to go back and test it after making another change. The good news is an updated beta is now available, and the 2 reported crash bugs in beta 1 have been fixed.

I tried to be clear in the PureSim forums that 8.2 is currently in beta and should not be downloaded if you don't want to help with identifying issues.

I'll tell you one thing, I have learned to develop a pretty thick skin over here, you guys are not the most understanding folks around. In this case you are right though, I shouldn't have let the beta out the door with such a glaring bug.

The whole public beta test is such a double-edged sword, on one hand the game gets some "bad press" but on the other hand I get amazing QA coverage and the release versions are extremely stable as a result. Being a solo developer with no QA staff I still feel like the public beta is the way to go.

Sorry your experience with the game was not favorable, but I can say I will continue to improve it.

Thanks Shaun, don't let him ruin your experience over here this is a great group of people (him included) however they do have a knack for speaking their mind from time to time.

No, we're not.
And no, you shouldn't have.

But I'm a lot harsher than even my usual right now, and that isn't about you or the game, it's on me.

Point blank, I ripped harder than this deserved & I shouldn't have. Please accept my public apology for going overboard.

Jon

... goes probably about double to you.

I was ripping a lot of stuff that had nothing to do with you or the game, and it took the exchange in this thread for me to realize how far that had gone. I guess I finally boiled over and I'm sorry.

Thanks, but not really all that nice. I should have figured out what I was doing (and why) sooner than I did.

No worries. I hope you get good news on the home front. I have been struggling with doctors for 2 years regarding tremors and other strange neurological stuff that has yet to be diagnosed so I know what you mean about the uncertainty being a killer. Every time I look at my hand shaking and face twitching I think "Oh no it has to be Parkinson's". Not relaxing by any means.

Anyway, here's to hoping for the best for you and your family.

I saw the your other thread, good luck with everything - that is a horrible set of circumstances.

I am the King of acting much worse then you did, about things that are much less important. I will admit that even at the time it seemed like an odd argument we were having.

Does anyone have any comments on the progress of 8.2 and it's release candidates?
