That was the album where LL jumped the shark, imho. His first two--"Radio" and "Bigger and Deffer"--were very, very minimalist. In fact, the little bio on the inside jacket of "Radio" starts off with the subtitle: "A Minimalist Homeboy Who Knows His Beats." The first two, for the most part, were just drum machine and Cut Creator, with Rick Rubin doing just a hair of sampling here and there. His best lyrical work was done on "Bigger and Deffer," without question.

I agree wholeheartedly. That was a *great* performance. Frankly, it was much more in the same style of his first two albums--hard 'n raw. I guess when he and Def Jam had more money to spend, they decided to add production--more production than they should have.
