Pick You Hope Your Team Doesn't Make

With all the draft previews coming out(and a thread on the ridiculous Sporting News preview is certainly in order) I got to thinking about who I hoped the Bengals don't take.

So I pose th question to everyone. Who do you hope your team doesn't take? Try to stay reasonable, no SW Missouri State linemen in round one.

For the Bengals its Clayton, WR from Oklahoma. (Although DT Johnson is a close second) Marvin has been talking about the need for recievers and I just don't get it. We have Johnson, Housmanzadeh, Warrick and Washington as our top four. If we pick a reciever we'd just be replacing something we already have. Its possible that this is a smokescreen, but last year Marvin talked about RBs and went out and got Perry.

I hope the Steelers dont take Matt Jones from Arkansas in the first round. Even if he is a good WR prospect, he's probably too raw to start this year, i'd much rather they take a DB, Lineman(either side) or Corner. I just think our other needs are more substantial at this point.

Warrick is rumored to have a degenerative knee condition and will never be the same as he was in 2003. Washington has yet to "get it." Besides, neither is a guy who can stretch the field and take coverage away from Chad Johnson. This offense uses a lot of multiple receiver sets, so depth and speed at wideout is needed and should be addressed in the first half of this draft, however, I'm with you in not wanting to address it in the first round.

I'm also with you in not wanting to pick Travis Johnson, which is what most mocks are saying. I think people doing mocks look at a team's glaring needs and automatically stick in the highest rated player available at that position, not considering the personality or preferences of the guy making the selections.

I just don't see Johnson being a Marvin Lewis type of guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see Marvin take a DE or Thomas Davis if he is available.

A lot of people have the Jets taking Heath Miller. The Jets have two glaring holes, CB and RT, and there are bottom of the first round prospects at both positions. Only if 6 CB and 3 OT have gone when the Jets pick should they grab Miller.

I agree with Steve.

I think Matt Jones will probably be alright down the road, but if the Steelers draft a WR, he needs to be able to come in and be the 4th WR and be somewhat productive this season. I don't think Jones will be ready for 2-3 seasons, minimum.

I'm hoping one of the top 3 CBs will slide to us (Jones, Rolle, Rogers), but that is doubtful. If not those guys, best available OL, DE, CB, LB, or WR, since we have depth issues, but no real pressing needs.

Is that good or bad? He'll definitely never be the same as he was in 1999. Knee condition or not.

Scooper: If we pick up a reciever later, so be it, but I really hope we can get a first rounder that plays this year. In general I don't see WR being a first day need. The best a draft pick could get is 3rd reciever as he isn't going to pass Housh or Chad for at least a couple of years.

As for DT Johnson, my beef is that I don't think the Bengals will get a first day DT now that they have Robinson and Thorton with Moore and Askew as subs. Again, a DT would be a third or fourth tackle at best. I think all the mocks showing the Bengals picking a DT first are off the mark. Marvin may smokescreen for individual players, but he tends to be frank about position needs. As of right now he isn't talking about needing a DT.

I hope the Cardinals don't take a RB in the 1st round, because if they do it means they didn't trade for Travis Henry like the rumor has been for a month or so now.

The Bills should hold onto their second rounder and use it for secondary help. This year's DB prospects run very deep and I think a solid guy could be picked in the mid fifties.

That's way too old for a cornerback unless he's Darrell Green.

In this offense, the third WR is essentially a starter. They need at least three, if not more good WR's on the roster. Right now they have two. CJ and Housh. Warrick is not a given to play again and Washington simply hasn't developed. He's still on the team because they don't have any other options. They don't need a WR to pass Housh or Chad, they need one to play with them, especially one who can stretch the field as that is not Housh's forte.

Being a Rams fan, I hope we don't take Clarett on the second day of the draft...

Two things I don't want the Lions to do with the #10 overall pick:

1.) Draft a cornerback. I have heard some talk over the last few days that they may consider taking 'Pacman' Jones with this pick. I'm not sold on him at the NFL level, plus the Lions already have Bly and Bryant as starters, and 2 or 3 young, developing CBs. I guess if Rolle was still there it wouldn't be a terrible pick, but either way, I think they have more pressing needs.

2.) I doubt this will happen, but I've seen a couple sources indicate they may think about taking a WR like Mike Williams if he were happen to drop that far. After two years of picking WR's in the first round, that would be a TON of cap space tied into one position. All indications are that Roy Williams and Charles Rogers will be back 100% in the fall. I know they need a 3rd receiver, but it would be kinda dumb to use a top 10 pick on a third guy.

No kidding.

Norv Turner was the new coach, and Shuler was going to be his Aikman.

What a bloody mess.
