A question about buffets
Are the people that bring you more water and rolls considered waiters?
I hardly ever tip when I eat at a buffet, because I dont personally believe they are. But I wondered if anyone here knew for sure

I tip at a buffet, usually a buck or two. They still have to clean the table when I'm done, and with my 2 year old that can be quite a chore.

I go to the Chinese buffet sometimes. Usually I'll leave like $1.

I go to Golden Corral and Shoney's occasionally. I generally tip a dollar per person at the table.

$1 per person is customary, especially if they are taking dirty plates, filling drinks and/or bringing fresh plates. Some buffets just clean, but at some Golden Corral's I've ate at usually are pretty fully service (fresh plates, clean-up, drinks). I ALWAYS leave $1 per person.
I've never done the Shoney's buffet, as I almost always order off the menu there. |

I tip 10% at a buffet, generally. I do frequent a specific place where I know the management and they give excellent service -- hot towels, extra tea, and so forth -- and I generally tip very well there.

So who has the best buffet? Shoney's or the Golden Corral? I would have to say Shoney's because their meatloaf is pretty good.

I always tip at buffets, with a minimum of at least $1, but I usually tip pretty high (20-25% at restaurants). The one time I do not tip is for takeout, unless it is a very big order. If it's just me, then I don't see what's worth tipping.

I have a bet going with one of the other guys in the ofice on whether Warren is Jimmy's uncle. Apparenttly there is some sort of connection. I tip when I go to the Buffet, but usually less than I tip at a sit-down restaurant. i tip extra if the personis having to do a lot of work at our table. |

I usually leave close to the regular % that i tip(15-20%). I dont think you are obligated to leave a regular percentage, but i do believe that the girls are taxed as if they made 12% tips of their sales.

$2 usually. I have a 15 month old. They deserve a tip of some sort. I think it is customary to leave 10% as someone mentioned.

Of course not. I think I may have been to a Shoney's buffet in my lifetime, but can't speak with any authority about either place. But the Sunday brunch buffet curcuit in these parts is a very serious market... so there are quite a number of quality offerings around here. |

I haven't been to a quality buffet in quite a long time.
We no longer have Shoney's here, and our Golden Corral shutdown last September but is opening up under new management next month. GC is my 5-year old's favorite restaurant, so we used to go once a week or so, usually after her gymnastics practice. I expect that pick up again shortly. There's enough to pick and choose from that I can manage, but it's not that great, obviously.
