PING: UGA Fans

I figure that there are a few of you on the board. I have been following the Saints this offseason, and figured that I'd give you a quick update on the recent number of high draft picks that have ended up on our roster.

DE Charles Grant (1st round pick; 4th year player)--Despite the fact that the Saints were unable to trade franchise player Darren Howard (giving us three starting quality defensive ends), Grant fans have no need to worry about playing time. Grant has more experience than Will Smith, and is able to stay healthier than Darren Howard. His starting position is written in ink. I expect huge numbers from him this year. Last year, he seemed to run out of gas at the end of the season. This year, the coaches are talking about rotations to make sure that everyone is fresh for the entire season.

OT Jon Stinchomb (2nd round pick; 3rd year player)--Jon has been the best suprise of minicamps. A second round pick a few seasons ago, he had seen very little playing time. Too weak to play tackle; too slow to play guard. This offseason, however, he made the biggest strength gains of anyone on the team. The coaches are very excited, and have mentioned that he may be the frontrunner for the left tackle position. Personally, I think that that may be a bit optimistic--to take a guy who really has not seen the field and making him the starter at the second/third most important position on the offense. However, the fact that he is even being mentioned for the job is a really good sign.I could see him being a quality backup at both tackle positions, and being groomed for the LT starter position next season.

DT Jon Sullivan (#6 overall pick; 3rd year player)--Hope springs eternal in the offseason. Accordingly, you can find reports of people saying that Sully finally "gets it" and "isn't morbidly obese" anymore. The more objective reports, however, indicate that Sully is, in fact, still out of shape and still seems unmotivated. I would be suprised if he isn't cut in a year or two when his cap hit makes that managable. I, of course, hope that the light has come on for him. I just have no reason to beleive that it has.

If you can find that lightswitch, the results can be amazing at times.

I had the opportunity to watch every down Sullivan played in high school and you really just described his senior season. Weeks of lethargy followed by a burst of brilliance, all seemingly turning on some intrinsic motivation that no one understood but him.

Physically, he can be quite good. He just seemed to drift into periods of "heart trouble", where he just didn't give a damn.

OT Jon Stinchomb blew out his knee yesterday and is done for the season. Before the injury, every indication was that he was being groomed for the starting LT position for next season. Very sad.

Being a Tech grad I tend to hate all things Bulldog. However, I've always pulled for the Stinchcombs (Jon and Matt) for some reason. Sad to hear he blew out his knee.

Kinda what Buzzbee said, although I don't have a history of pulling for the Stinchcombs. But I hate hearing about the injury, especially just a few days after reading a pretty good article about how he was biding his time until the starting spot opened up & how he wanted to stay with the team that drafted him, etc.

That is just so wrong! You can't own an ancestor of UGA and not love the dawgs! I think you should give the dog to me so she will have a proper home.

Yeah. He has had some problems in pass blocking, but has exceeded expectations in run blocking. Just what you would expect from a highly regarded rookie. As long as the team is careful to give his some help with backs and tight ends when he is going against good rushers, he should be fine. I love his mean streak.

He just hurt his shoulder lifting weights, but the MRI showed no structural damage, and apparently this is an injury that he has had since college. Just something that he has learned to tough out. Not a big deal, but it may cost him some work in the preseason, I expect.

And, to continue the updates, Jonathan Sullivan has been performing very well in the preseason. He started on the third team defense for the first preseason game and played great. That promoted him to second team defense against the Patriots, and he looked great against them, too.

Now, due to some injuries, he is going to (it appears) get a start with the first team defense. And, whether he starts or not, he is going to get some extended playing time. As the coaching staff noted, he has looked good for 15 plays at a time. Now it is up to him to show that he can look good for 50 plays at a time. That, of course, has always been his problem.

The coaching staff will give him every opportunity to succeed. First, our current DTs are the weak link on the team. We are having trouble stopping the run when the first teamers are playing so far this preseason. Second, his status as the #6 overall pick helps him. There are people on the coaching staff and in the front office who want nothing more than for him to play his way into a starting position and get the egg off their face from drafting him.

Jonathan Sullivan is on the fast lane to obscurity (if he hasn't already arrived). After being traded to New England for a "fresh start," he got in trouble with with law. Hope that he invested that signing bonus wisely, because I don't see another one in his future.

SULLIVAN ARRESTED: Former Saints defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan was arrested Sunday morning and charged with possession of marijuana, a seat belt violation, running two stop signs and playing loud music in Griffin, Ga., according to police reports. The arresting officer, M.G. Bowman first observed Sullivan, a first-round draft pick by the Saints in 2003 who was recently traded to the New England Patriots, driving with loud music coming from the car at 3:56 a.m., the police report said. While following Sullivan, according to police Bowman saw Sullivan drive through two stop signs without stopping first. Bowman stopped Sullivan and noticed Sullivan and passenger Tamarco Clemons not wearing seat belts and a bag containing what appeared to be marijuna in the car. The police report said Bowman first asked Sullivan if there were any weapons in the car, and after Sullivan said yes, Bowman retrieved a handgun. Bowman then asked Sullivan and Clemons if there was anything illegal in the car, and Sullivan and Clemons said no. Sullivan granted Bowman permission to search the car, where Bowman retrieved the bag that was found to contain less than an ounce of marijuana, which Sullivan and Clemons claimed was not their property. Sullivan and Clemons were arrested and brought to the Griffin Police Department, where they were released on signature bonds.
