Poker Question?

Do you ever berate someone online after they make a terrible call and lay a bad beat on you?

I must admit I am guilty of this from time to time, usually when I am drunk.

no, never.

but I also don't give the "nh" after someone wins with a pair of 6's or something stupid like that. a nh is a NICE HAND, and it drives me crazy to see people throw it around freely

I'm the opposite. I berate people for bitching about taking a bad beat.

First of all, there's the idea about not tapping the fish tank.

Second, some of these people act like they are the very first player in the world to have ever gotten their money in with the best hand and lost. Not to mention, they have never, ever even dreamed of sucking out someone else.

Don't get me wrong, I do yell and bitch at my desk, but it always seems too much trouble with zero reward to actually type it out.

I try very hard not to do this but every once in a while I do. The last time I got all the money in preflop I had AA and villian had KQ. KKx flop, x turn, A river and I double up. He complains that continues to rip him off and how far ahead he was on the flop and on the turn. I repsonded that I did have him preflop and he went off. This was in a tourney though and he quickly exited afterwards. I think it's less bad in a tourney as inciting tilt can be a good thing. In a ring game though, especially online, lot's of players just leave the table. Not good news.

A related observation.

In general, as I've ventured into online play and now money games as well as poker forums such as two+two, I've found online poker players to be some of the most generally unlikable people I've ever encountered. Far worse than the average Internet citizen, and that's saying something.

Actually the opposite bothers me sometimes. If you go all in with a pair of 3's against my rockets, and spike a 3, dont apologize. It doesn't make me feel any better. Just shutup and take your chips.

ML - There are many factors that contribute to this, I think. Poker is a zero sum game. In order for you to win, someone else has to lose. People are always more confrontational when they don't have to actually confront the other person face to face. Additionally, I think you'll find the average age of an online poker player to be around 24, which means there are a great number of immature (read: asshole) 15-17 year olds playing.

I am totally with you on this one. If you were so damn sorry you would have folded preflop.

A situation like this one is what sparked this post. I can deal with a beat like that.

The situation that set me off was I had AA in the big blind, $100-$200 blinds 5 handed the button raises to $500, I put him all in and he CALLS with 3-5, not raises but CALLS. Flop comes down 3 5 X, another 5 on the turn finishes me off. As pissed as I was already the fucker apologizes to me. At which case I reply "don't make a bonehead call and then apologize when you hit a miracle hand, just take my chips and shut up"

He wasn't happy about my response, but I took some satisfaction out of it.

Just curious, what were the chip counts at that point?

Ok Ok...that's a bit different, Lathum. You have a legitimate beef after he apologizes.

I never ever ever berate a player for laying a bad beat on me. It's counterproductive. I don't want them to know that they've made a bad play. I want them to feel terrific, so if I ever run into them again, they'll make the exact same play. I only get mad at the players who tap the fish tank.

The worst I've ever said is "doh" when I lose on a big bad beat.

That's "said" as in typed into the chat window. The things that I yell at the monitor when I'm in the house by myself are things I won't repeat in front of anyone else. But damn it makes me feel better.

Today I flopped a set of aces and my opponent turned and rivered a straight ace high. I told him that he was about a 98% underdog in the hand. Then later on I hit a set of jacks on the flop and a guy called down rivering a higher set. I politley told him that he hit a two outer, even though I hit my two outer on the flop.

A while ago I would have berated both players(maybe not the second), bu now I don't bother. The game is evolving enough that I want the fish to stay fish and not read up on poker so not to get bitched at again.

never, BUT, anyone who makes a critical/stupid comment about another player is fair game to be spun up like a top.

the kind of beat I am talking about is when someone makes a horrible call pre flop. If someone raises me and the hits a miricale hand I'm ok with it because I try and give them the benefit of the doubt, but I can't take it when someone calls of there money with a terrible hand, this usually happens with 69 suited or something like that.

I say nice catch when someone clips me on the river, even on a 2 or 3-outer. For instance, in this hand tonight, I lost with AK vs K2 on a king-high flop. He hit his two on the river.

I think, last year, I probably would've gotten fired up about an awful call. Now that I've played so much, I told him nice catch, and then got all his money within fifteen minutes.

Are you kidding? I LOVE it when someone calls me with 69 suited. Ask them to keep doing it. Find out relevant information. Where do you usually play? How often? What time? Do you have brothers or sisters? Do they play?

If I get outdrawn on the river, and I don't know the person, I'll just say "And that's why they call it gambling, folks". Making sarcastic/hateful comments about other players at the table is a good way to put yourself on long-term tilt.

Doesn't mean I won't post here about it tho

If you are berating peole then you are holding on too tight. You've lost your edge.

I never berate people because shit happens all the time and I benefit from it as much as get stung by it. I am a decent player and I tend to win money when i play so I don't let it get to me. I only play live, so I might feel different if I were playing on the internet.

The times when I do get pissed is when i make a mistake. Like when i play cards that I know I shouldn't or when I miss all the signs saying "Muck cards now!" or when I put guys on the wrong hand and after the other guy crushes me with his , say straight, I can't believe I didn't see it coming.

I'll usually type something like 'crap' or 'augh,' but I never berate people. Like most have said -- I enjoy seeing that sort of play.
