Boxing: Jones-Taraver III announced

At this point who cares? I loved Jones, but he looked horrible in his last fight. He needs to hang it up.

Tarver, Roy Jones to face off in 'trilogy' fight
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer
July 28, 2005

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones Jr. will go another round in their battle for light heavyweight supremacy.

``It's the trilogy. It's the third fight,'' Brad Jacobs, Jones' Miami-based adviser, said Thursday after the two camps set an Oct. 1 date for the title fight at a site to be determined.

``We're calling it the World Series between these two guys.''

Jacobs and Tarver's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, said the rubber match between the 36-year-old fighters might be at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino in Las Vegas, where the two fought twice before.

Tarver knocked out Jones in May 2004 to keep the WBC and IBO titles. Jones had defeated Tarver in a close decision in November 2003 to win the championships.

DeGuardia said venues in Atlantic City, N.J., Memphis, Tenn., Portland, Ore., Connecticut and Florida also were bidding to host the fight, which he said would be telecast on HBO pay-per-view.

Tarver, the current IBO title holder, is 23-3 with 18 knockouts. He won a unanimous decision in June over Glen Johnson in Memphis.

Jones is 49-3 with 38 knockouts. Johnson knocked him out last September in Memphis.

Marc Ratner, Nevada Athletic Commission executive director, said the Oct. 1 date already was scheduled for a James Toney fight to be arranged in Las Vegas. But he said the commission and the Strip could handle two fights on one night.

Scott Ghertner, entertainment and sports director for MGM Mirage Inc., said he could not confirm the Tarver-Jones rematch would be at Mandalay Bay. DeGuardia, reached by telephone while vacationing in upstate New York, said the fight was important for bragging rights between the boxers who've circled each other since they fought as young amateurs. ``Whoever wins it determines whether it's Tarver-Jones or Jones-Tarver,'' DeGuardia said. ``At 13 years old, they faced each other in the Florida state championships. That was a real controversial decision that Jones won, and he became a superstar. Tarver always had a thing for Jones.''

Sorry for the spelling in the title. My alcohol content is a little to high right now.

Jones is still boxing? Reminds me of Holyfield.

I think Jones has a long way before he gets to Holyfield status. When he can't beat anyone in the top 25 and slurs all of his words, then he's at Holyfield status. As it is, Jones can still probably beat most light heavyweights rather easily.

Now Tommy Hearns...someone please keep him out of the ring. He may have won the other day, but I've never heard of John Long (19-6-0). If Hearns tries to make a serious run, he's going to get seriously hurt.

I'm a bit torn.

I'm a huge RJJ fan. I really believe that he was not only the best boxer of the last 20 years, but he may be the best of all time. At his peak, he was unhitable yet possessed a knockout punch. It was once calculated (right before he moved to Heavyweight) that he had won something like 97% of the ROUNDS he had fought when he won his championship belt. The guy was simply amazing.

The knock against RJJ was that he didn't fight some of the top competition (though he beat both Hopkins and James Toney), but then again many guys didn't want to fight Jones.

With that said, he looked bad his last 3 fights. His reflexes aren't what they used to be and he gets hit much too solidly. He could get by with his unorthidox style when he was cat-quick. Not anymore.

So I wish he would stay retired, but who knows? Maybe the layoff did him some good and he can pull out one last victory. The only problem is that if he wins, I doubt it will be his last fight...

I agree with you Blackadar, I thought that his last fight would show a return to his former form. You know get back for getting knocked out, but he didn't have it. In a match where he was favored, he looked terrible. I agree, I wish he would stay retired and at least keep that part of his legacy alive.

Marvelous Marvin should have won that fight with Sugar Ray, then he retired and never looked back. He is still rememberd as a badass. I still remember him laying out Hearns in Vegas. Jones needs to take a page from his book and let it go.

I wish Jones would stay out of the right, at the same time I will definitely have interest in the fight. At the very least I would watch a replay on HBO the following week.

I would have to think Tarver is a decent favorite going in.

The fight is coming tomarrow. I, for one, still think that Jones has no business in this fight and is going to get beaten soundly. I still hope he pulls it out, but he should probably retire either way.

I have a bad feeling that Jones is heading towards Holyfield status. He has nothing left to prove, but his ego is too big to let himself retire in any other place than in 1st.

Hopefully, regardless of the outcome of the fight, he'll retire for good.

Personally, I think it would be a waste of money. Jones looks like a shell of his former self. There are much better fights coming up that would be more deserving.

I think it could be interesting. I will hopefully be able to read the round by round over at another site. Roy looks like he is in pretty good shape:

Just for the hell of it:

I know that the format is off a little, but this says that Tarver is going to win.

Im glad I didnt buy this fight. RJJ really needs to retire.

I watched Byrd's fight and most of Toney's fight on Showtime. What a bore both were. These 2 really need to fight each other so they both stop talking about it.

Yeah, Jones needs to retire. I didn't buy the PPV (I don't buy PPV anymore) and will probably watch the replay.

Wasn't home last night anyway, but I probably would have missed the Byrd and Toney fights regardless. They just don't interest me. I used to like Toney, but him as a heavyweight just doesn't even compare to what he was at cruiser when he fought Jirov, let alone the lighter weights.
