Jerry Maguire Moment in FOF

No, it was not a player whining about the media not understanding the problems and pressures 54 million come wit', but it did remind me of a line from that flick.

I sign a veteran WR to a 2-year contract for just a little above minisal. In the first year, he leads the team with 72 catches for 973 yards. He holds out for more money for the second year, but I refuse to give him what he wants. After training camp, he decides to go ahead and finish out the contract. He is our leading receiver for the second straight year. Near the end of the season, I try to sign him to a long-term deal, but get the "due to past injustices" message. Sounds like some time around training camp, Marcee must have told him that, "You're gonna play out your existing shitty contract, and next year, you're gonna become a free agent."

Do the guys usually drop their holdout and then refuse to resign?

It was something I was worried about in my latest career, my current starting RB was a 7th rounder that boomed up and his first 2 seasons were pretty good...

2007: 335 carries, 1386 yards 9 TDs, 9 catches, 68 yards 1 TD
2008: 273 carries 1219 yards 7 TDs, 30 catches 265 yards 2 TDs (becoming a more complete back)

He was due to make about 500K, but held out b/c he "wanted to be payed like the starting back he is." I gave him the new contract just because I know he isn't done improving yet, and was worried he wouldn't resign with me after the season.

So my question is...is what Skydog saw here the normal with holdouts that you don't give in to? Or will they sometimes end their holdout and then still resign with you at the end of the year?

I've had guys end their holdout but never been able to get them to sign a contract after that.

IC, well then it is probably a good thing I gave the guy the contract he wanted. A bit steep(18 mill over 4 years) but I really want to see exactly how good a 7th round RB can be in FOF.(he's improved 18 points past his max potential when I drafted him and its only been 2 years.)

In the past, I was able to re-sign guys after denying them the contract they requested when holding out. However, there were changes in the holdout logic in either the last or penultimate patch, so I'm not sure whether or not it still happens.

EDITED FOR HORRID SYNTAX

thanks Skydog, with my next holdout I'll try the save and reload tactic and see if I can ever get him to sign longterm after ending his holdout.

The only problem with the save-and-reload is that if he never signs long-term, we still wouldn't be sure if we are dealing with a player-specific issue (perhaps tied to loyalty...) or a global response.

While I can understand the ill will a player might feel toward a team that refuses to renegotiate a contract, I still think there are instances when he would resign with the team (especially if there is a lot of sweetness in the new deal you are offering him).
