Well Done, Dallas

I'm sure there are some things that could be better on the official end, plus the mayor is sniping at the Gov and so on. However, the people have come thru tremendously. To whit...

My wife, two of my daughters and I gathered a bunch of clothes, linens, towels, etc... then went to the store and bought a bunch of diapers and so forth. We then proceeded to Reunion Arena where, along with the convention center, thousands of Katrina refugees have landed.

Well, we got there and you would not believe what this area has done. There has been so much donated to these people that they could not even take the clothes we brought (they accepted the diapers and such heartily). There are huge piles of clothing, sorted into sizes and gender. Huge stockpiles of water and toothbrushes and everything you could think of. It is amazing.

I bitch about Dallas and say I want to move back to Ft. Worth eventually (where I grew up), but it was really an incredible site to see what has been done for these people- who deserve every bit of help they can get.

Well done, Metroplex.

My sister-in-law works for Catholic Charities in Dallas and has been up at Reunion the past couple of days. She says that everything is running very smoothly there and that everything has been organized very well. She also said that they have more than enough donated clothes and that the only things they really need are diapers and other baby items (formula, etc) and new plain, white t-shirts.

We've got more diapers and formula than we know what to do with at our shelter at the LSU-Shreveport campus. I just got back from their and it was still stocked as full as it was 4 days ago.

But I think the folks here are probably more fortunate and many were in town before disaster set in.

If I might make a suggestion, it might be worthwhile to see if there are any other charities that are serving the needs of folks who were not directly affected by Katrina whose stockpiles need replenishing as well.

In all the rush to get understandable help to those left devastated by the hurricane, many charities across the country have given generously of their donations for the communities they normally serve, leaving them somewhat depleted when it comes to giving the continuing care to the locals who need it.
