Myth poppers
Just saw a good one on ESPN Classic last night. Apparently the real reason Jim Brown retired from football was that he hadn't quit finished filming his first movie 'Diry Dozen' and with training camp starting he had to choose between his old career or his new one. First time I have heard this and puts to rest all those tired and wrong 'he just wanted to go out on top' stories you hear all the time.
So it got me thinking, how many other 'stories' are out there that are taken as truth at face value but may not really be true at all? Or that really have a reason behind it that somehow gets 'left out' in the modern versions? |

It turns out that HornsManiac and Kevin from Dell were actually the same person and puts to rest all those tired and wrong 'he's just a good buddy of mine that happens to post in the same threads I do like five seconds after I do' stories you heard all the time.

Other myth 'poppers:' George Washington did not have wooden teeth.
Hockey is not the official Canadian national sport. Cell phones will not cause an explosion when filling up your car. |

Gosh, I have read many times that he quit football to concentrate on his film career. It was hardly a secret. I think many sports columnists, who often substitute their opinion for fact, have romanticized his retirement into what they wanted it to be, rather than what it was, but Brown has never hidden this from anyone.

Yes, I've heard the football vs film career thing in general, but never that his decision was forced by finishing his movie vs. training camp starting. Guess the point is that he didn't really plan to retire, just chose differently when forced to. |

He was anxiously awaiting the script for Gonna Git You Sucka, but mis-timed it by a few years.

The bigger sadness is that Barry Sanders fooled himself out of besting Walter Payton's record by thinking he was emulating his father's hero.

I have GIFs of her in a bikini during the JAWS episode, but I learned my lesson with Jess Simpson...
Edit: I find this pic strangely arousing, however... ![]()

That, and the fact that it's a dream geek show. As a developer of a realistic tactical shooter that's always been maligned for not having enemies react enough when shot, I loved the episode where they tested the Hollywood "thrown back by the impact of a bullet" and barely got the pig carcass to move no matter HOW big the bullet...
